Archibald (Davisson) Burris was a millwright by trade, a Scotch-Irishman, and a Revolutionist in Ireland. The rebellion failing, he stowed away on a ship and hid in a coffin, changed his name from Davisson to Burris and came to America with four brothers and one sister to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
His brothers departed, never to see each other again, and his sister married an Englishman and they were returning to England when the ship sank and they were lost at sea.
Archibald married Mary Holbert around 1819-20. Mary was born around the early 1800’s and was a daughter of Thomas and Jane Holbert, who were one of the early settlers in Grantsville, Calhoun County, Virginia
They owned 400 acres of land starting at the Little Kanawha River (including the land where the present town of Grantsville is located up to the Town Hill Road, near Jimmy Roberts Store. This area was called Burris Run and later changed to Simon P. Stump Run.
Archibald built a log house where the Armory is located. The stump of an old Elm tree remains there. Archibald and Mary also owned land at Peters Creek in Randolph County in 1834 and land at the Collins Settlement in Lewis County, Virginia in 1835.
He rebuilt the Webb’s Mill in Ritchie County near Smithville and went to pick up his paycheck. He got in a fight with a Fredick which some say claimed his life. Then some say he was working at the mill and took whooping cough and died. They buried him before Mary could get to the mill, at a cemetery near Smithville. His grave was never found and neither story has been proven true.
His Estate Settlement was recorded in the Lewis County, Virginia Court in March 1838..

William and Malinda owned several acres of land in Center District, Pleasant Hill,
Charles Burrows had a sheepskin deed of this property. Part of this land was donated
for the Burrows Cemetery and this land was later deeded to several of their children.
