Descendants of Hans STUMPFF From MICHAEL STUMP SR. of VIRGINIA, 1709 - 1768, A Treatise on the Origin and Ancestry, by Thurman Stump, 1975. --------------------------------------------------------------------- FIRST GENERATION 1. Hans STUMPFF was born circa 1600-1602. Burgher, Eberbach am Neckar, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germanies. The birth and marriage records, possibly the death record also, are, again, casualties of the Thirty Years' War. On the other hand this progenitor may have been a casualty himself in the Thirty Years' War. For instance, the Armorial section's Johann Stumpff in Zurich mentions a Hans Stumpf of that branch of the family in 1637 in Dresden (page 174), a city on the Elbe River in Saxony of the northern Germanies. About two hundred and forty miles northeast of the Heidelberg-Eberbach Neckar River valley area. However, the single and double-f name suffixes substantially differentiates the two individuals. Hans STUMPFF had the following child: +2 i. Diterich STUMPFF. SECOND GENERATION 2. Diterich STUMPFF died before 1725. Burgher, raftsman, fisherman in Eberbach am Neckar, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germanies. The date of birth of Diterich has been previously figured to have been circa 1636. The church parish records are apparent casualties of the Thirty Years' War. He was married to Anna Catharina MUFF on 26 Apr 1664. Anna Catharina MUFF was born about 1642. She died on 24 Jan 1725. She was the daughter of Andreas MUFF. At the time of her death she was a widow, 83 years old. Diterich STUMPFF and Anna Catharina MUFF had the following child: +3 i. Hans Peter STUMPFF. THIRD GENERATION 3. Hans Peter STUMPFF was born on 1 Jan 1665. He died on 17 Sep 1720. Burgher, boatsman, fisherman. Note the marriage date of the parents and the birth dates of their children. The average interval for the births is around twenty-three and one-half months or two years. Since the elder son, Michael Junior, of the seventh child --See 5th generation--(Michael Senior) was born circa 1730 and that family emigrated in 1743 there is an interval of thirteen years between those dates. Sufficient time for the other five children in Michael Senior's family to have been born in the Germanies, the principality of Hesse to be exact according to the present-day family legend of emigrating from Hesse. He was married to Elizabeth HAIDEN, daughter of Christoph HAIDEN, on 14 Apr 1730. 8. Hans Peter STUMPF was born on 23 Mar 1704. He was married to Rosina Barbara MAURER on 7 Nov 1730. Daughter of Leonard MAURER. 9. Hans Jorg STUMPF was born on 29 Nov 1706. He was married to Anna Sibylla BACKFISCH on 3 May 1734. She was the daughter of Barthel BACKFISCH. 10. Hans Michael STUMP(F)* was born on 17 Mar 1709 in Eberbach, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germanies. d. No record at Eberbach through 1777** *Name recorded on the colony of Pennsylvania's Philadelphia immigration lists September 30, 1743. **(Hans) Michael Stump(f), Senior, died 1768 on the South Fork, Hampshire County, colony of Virginia. He was married to Catherine/Katherine (surname unknown). Catherine/Katherine died in 1794. Hans Michael STUMPFF and Catherine/Katherine had the following children: +11 i. As noted above the Michael Senior was born in Eberbach am Neckar in the principality of Hessen-Darmstadt of the Germanies. A record of the birth has been given previously. The marriage record and records of the children's births have not been found to date. The likelihood of ever finding them seems to be a remote thing at best. An unsuccessful search for them was concluded recently. This is the family that emigrated from Hesse to the colonies in 1743. Presumably all of the children were born overseas before emigrating or at least the majority of them were, due to the derived birth year of Michael Junior, circa 1730. FIFTH GENERATION 11. Michael, Junior STUMP(F)* was born about 1730 in Hesse, Germany. He died in Jun 1799. The above Michael Junior is the 1744 Hans Michael Stumpf der Jung indentured to the woodworking trade in the town Eberbach of Hesse in the Germanies. As noted the year of birth has been approximated as 1730 based upon the age for apprenticing there at that time. No marriage record has been found to date. The year of marriage, 1765, has apparently been derived from the oldest child's, Michael 3rd, known birth date in the year 1766. The third Michael's birth date was undoubtedly taken from a long-lost and missing family Bible which many of the present-day descendants have been unable to locate, unfortunately. The birth date was known and inscribed on the gravesite marker previously shown to commemorate the 1912 ceremonies. The month and year of death is derived, as noted previously, from the date of the inventory of his, Michael Stump(f) Junior, estate since he died intestate. He was married to Sarah HUGHES, daughter of Thomas and Mary (Baker) HUGHES, Senior, in 1765. Sarah HUGHES died on 15 Jun 1821. Leonard STUMP(F). He was married to Elizabeth SEE. 16. Magdaline STUMP(F). She married a "YOAKHAM". SIXTH GENERATION 17. Michael 3rd STUMP(F) was born on 4 Feb 1766. He died on 27 Mar 1837. Memorial tombstones to Michael 3rd and wife Magdalena were placed at the gravesites by descendants on May 30, 1912. The monument at the graves is said to have been made in Kentucky and transported most of the way to Steer Creek by water. Probably by way of the Ohio and Little Kanawha rivers. Dr. Leland J. Stump, a great-grandson of Charleston, West Virginia, initiated the memorial movement and he and Taylor R. Stump addressed the gathering at the time of the commemoration. It was noted before that the early years of Michael 3rd were allegedly spent in the frontier areas of the Monongahela and Ohio River valleys with his frontiersmen uncles, Jesse and Elias Hughes. He was married to Magdalena RICHARDS on 10 Feb 1786. She was the daughter of John and Sara (Ellsworth) Richards. Magdalena RICHARDS was born on 17 Oct 1768. She died on 11 Jun 1832. Taylor Randolph the grandfather was a skilled cabinetmaker by trade and farmed about 200 acres of land at the old homestead. He also was a member of the 1882 state legislature. The homestead referred to in the preceding was located on the upper Little Kanawha River not far from the headwaters of the stream. He was married to Samilda STUMP on 14 Jan 1866. Samilda STUMP was born on 4 Mar 1842. She died on 25 Jul 1907. Daughter of Jacob J. Stump and Mary "Polly" Vannoy. Jacob J. Stump was the son of Absolom Stump, Senior, and Margaret Bush. The birth year of the grandmother Samilda is taken from the 1850 U.S. Census for Gilmer County, Virginia, under the entry dated August 10, 1850, which lists her age at that time as eight years.
