Agee and Alice Mae Fetters Agee of Grantsville. He graduated from John Marshall High School. He owned and operated Agee & Associates Insurance Agency, Indianapolis, Ind., with 18 years affiliation, and attended St. James Lutheran Church, Greenfield. Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Lori J. Weymouth Agee; one son, Gregory R. Agee, Jr., of Greenfield; one daughter, Leah K. Agee of Greenfield; one brother, Christopher W. Agee of Indianapolis; two sisters, Cathy M. ALLEN, DELMA D. 8/20/1998 Delma D. Allen, 84, of Summersville, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at the home of her daughter, Evelyn, after a long illness. She was born in Bomont, Clay County, the daughter of the late Roscoe and Emma Samples. She was a member of Presbyterian Church, Summersville, and Order of Eastern Star, and a past noble grand of Rebecca Lodge of Clendenin, and former Sunday School teacher. Surviving are her husband, Marion "Sam" Allen; two daughters, Evelyn Kaye Hamric of Elkview and Anna Lou Rucker of Clendenin; three sons, Harold Allen of Gilbert, Ariz., Gordon Allen of Lancaster, Pa., and Roger Allen of Grantsville; two sisters, Reva Wilson of Strange Creek and Emogene Sweeney of Queen Shoals; one brother, Dr. F.P. ANDERSON, ARLINGTON 2/5/1998 Arlington Gaston "Andy" Anderson, 87, of Spencer, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998 at Roane General Hospital. He was born in Millstone, a son of the late William Thomas and Jessie Lynch Anderson. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He founded Straight Creek Lumber Co., Elizabeth, which he operated with his brothers. It was moved to Spencer where it continued until 1950. From 1950-1958, he was in the oil and gas business. In 1958, he opened Dependable Pipe and Supply Co., Arnoldsburg Road, Spencer, which he operated until his retirement in 1979. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Spencer. Surviving are two daughters, Karen Depew of Lilburn, Ga., and Joy McCoy of Greensboro, N.C.; one brother, Dan C. Anderson of Colorado Springs, Colo; six grandchildren, Curt Chambers of Woodstock, Ga., Kristie McCoy Lano of Marietta, Ga., Matthew McCoy, Kimberly McCoy and Kathryn McCoy, all of Greensboro, and Carrie Depew Mayer of Carrolton, Ga.,; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen DeLauder Anderson; three brothers, William C. Anderson, Wilson D. Anderson and Henry D. Anderson; and one sister, Phyllis Ross. Arnold, 71, of Akron, Ohio, died Thursday, July 30, 1998. He was born in Nicut, the son of the late Edward C. and Martha Barr Arnold. He retired from Goodyear Aerospace in 1982 with 30 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II and held the position of teletype operator during the Nuremberg War Crimes trials. Surviving are one brother, Ray Arnold of Akron; one nephew, David Arnold, of Los Angeles, Calif.; and two nieces, Georgette Lavery of Clinton, Ohio, and Laura Arnold of Akron.He was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Ernest Arnold.Services were held at Kucko- Anthony-Kertesz Funeral Home, Akron, with Rev. Bailey, 98, of Parkersburg, formerly of Minnora, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, at St. Joseph's Hospital. She was born in Calhoun County and was a member of Milo Community Church, where she had served as church pianist and Sunday School teacher. She was a member of Saulsbury Homemakers Club, Mineral Wells, and was an active leader in 4-H clubs as well as Senior Citizens of Grantsville, Mineral Wells and Athens, Ohio. Earlier in her life, she served as a cook at Minnora Elementary School. Surviving are one daughter, Norma Cline of Parkersburg; two sons, Ray Bailey of Norton, Ohio, and Ronald Bailey of Wooster, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Holly Bailey; one daughter, Wanda L. Boggs; three sisters; and six brothers. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. She was a former employee of Babcock and Wilcox Corp., Barberton, Ohio, and was a member of Victory Baptist Church, Grantsville. BARKER, CLIFORD 3/19/1998 Cliford Barker, 49, of Big Springs, died Tuesday, Mar. 10, 1998, at Calhoun General Hospital. He was born in Smithville, a son of the late Hoy and Wanda Ray Barker. He was a Harrisville High School graduate, and a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. Surviving are his wife, Edith Byrd Barker, and one son, Hoy Barker at home. Barnes, 59, of Millstone, died Monday, Mar. 30, 1998, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center. He was born in Clay County, a son of the late Thomas and Belva Chapman Barnes. He was a U.S. Army veteran and the first emergency medical technician employed by Calhoun General Hospital Ambulance Service. He was a former employee of Spencer State Hospital and was a barber at Millstone and Arnolds-burg. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Orma. Surviving are his wife, Velma Mae Parsons; one son, Thomas Perry Barnes of Millstone; and one brother, James S. Barnes of White Lake, Mich. He was preceded in death by one son, Gerald Bradley Barnes; one sister, Marietta Barnes; and two brothers, William E. Barnes and Thomas Burly Barnes. Barnes, 58, of Ripley, died Monday, Mar. 23, at St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of Fred and Eleanor Gainer Barnes of Grantsville. He was a graduate of Glenville State College and West Virginia School of Medicine. He was a U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam, having served as a physician in the medical corps. He was a member of American College of Surgeons and an American Diplomat of Surgeons. He was a member of Phi Ki fraternity and North Parkersburg Baptist Church. He had been engaged in family medical practice in Ravenswood for 10 years. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Mary Susan Hall Barnes; two daughters, Meridith Cornell of Huntington and Heather Smith of Lexington, Ky.; one brother, Richard Barnes of Parkersburg; one sister, Ann Smith of Grantsville; and five grand-children, Meagan, Kendra, and Kenneth Austin Smith of Lexington and Hiliary and William Morgan Cornell of Huntington. Basnett, 75, of Creston, died Monday, Apr. 20, in St. Joseph's Hospital, Parkersburg, following a long illness. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Charlie and Nettie Craddock Basnett. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was retired from B.F. Goodrich Tire and Rubber Co. Surviving are his wife, Ethel M. Goff Basnett; two sons, Joseph Dale Basnett of Akron, Ohio, and William Charles Basnett of Bernard, Calif.; one step-daughter, Sandra Duncan of Akron; one sister, Mattie Starcher of Burning Springs; two grandchildren; three step- grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and four step-great- grandchildren. He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late John Jefferson Basnett and Stella Hathaway Basnett. He was retired from Eureka Pipeline Co. and served as a deacon in Brooksville Baptist Church for 41 years. Surviving are his wife, Bessie Carpenter Basnett; four sons, William Charles Basnett of Annamoriah, Jerry Basnett of Grantsville, Rev. She co-owned Beecher Drilling Co., Grantsville, with her husband, and was a member of Knotts Memorial United Methodist Church, Grantsville. Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Charles W. Beecher of Grantsville; one brother, Dale Rupert of Munday; special nephew, James P. Prusack of Grantsville; and several nieces and nephews. A son of the late Charles Noell Bland and Pearl Maxwell Bland, he was originally from St. Albans, and was a resident of Charleston for 32 years. He was a graduate of Duke University and West Virginia University College of Law. He was a senior law partner and founder of Bland and Bland attorney-at-law, Charleston, and member of Kanawha County Bar Association, W.Va. Bar Association, W.Va. Trial Lawyers Association, American Trial Association, and Village Chapel Presbyterian Church, Charleston. He was a former Kanawha County assistant prosecutor and charter member of Y's Men's Club, support group for YMCA, past president of YMCA and W.Va. State Chapter of Multiple Sclerosis. She was born in Warren, Ohio. She was a member of Wash-ington United Methodist Church. She graduated from Herndon (Virginia) High School, and received her associates degree in nursing from Parkersburg Community College. She was employed as a registered nurse at St. Joseph Hospital in 1981 until she became ill in 1987. Surviving in addition to her parents are one sister, Nikki Rae Bollinger of Parkersburg; one brother, Scott Alan Bollinger of Columbus, Ohio; and maternal grandmother, Marie Mace of Vienna. She was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Raymond and Lucy Starcher Bollinger of Grantsville, and maternal grandfather, Glen F. Mace of Arnoldsburg. Zion, a daughter of the late Marsellus and Hannah Slider Stout. She was a former cook in various restaurants in Calhoun County, and was employed by Seiberling Rubber Co., Barberton, Ohio, during World War II. She was a member of Stoney Point United Methodist Church, Arnoldsburg, and American Legion Auxiliary, Victor Hamilton Post #82, Grantsville. Surviving are two daughters, Irene Lynch of Arnoldsburg and Velma Wood of Millstone; one son, Donald Booher of Barberton, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was a former employee of Pennzoil Co. for 32 years and a contractor for Consolidated Oil and Gas Co. where he retired in 1974. He was founder and operator of Busch Inc. and was an independent oil producer for many years. He was a 54-year member and past master of Burning Springs Lodge #132, AF&AM, and a member of Scottish Rites Bodies, Valley of Park-ersburg, Nemesis Temple of the Shrine, and Grantsville Chapter #73, Order of Eastern Star. During the 1950's, he served on the Wirt County Board of Education and served more than 20 years on the board of directors of Wirt County Bank and Wesbanco Bank. He served as executive president of Wirt County Bank and was a former emergency medical technician and charter member of Wirt County Emergency Services. He was a member of Strait Creek Baptist Church and a philanthropist. He was a graduate of Calhoun County High School and attended West Virginia Wesleyan College. During the early 1930s, he was construction superintendent for Rt. 16 in Clay County. In the late 1930s, he owned and operated an oil and gas trucking company, and in the early 1940s, he was co-owner of Litman Motor Freight. Later in the 1940s, he was owner of Chenoweth Wheeler Real Estate Agency. From 1950-1975, he was a cotton farmer in Pecos, Tex. Upon retirement in 1976, he and his wife returned to Parkersburg. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Parsons Chenoweth; one son, Robert Chenoweth of Mendham, N.J.; six grandchildren, Russell E. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Ravenswood, where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and was an active member of several other boards and committees. During his 22 years in the Air Force, he attained the rank of lieutenant colonel and received a Meritorious Service Award before retiring in 1987. Educated at Calhoun County High School, Glenville State College and West Virginia University Medical School, he became a licensed physician in the states of Ohio, West Virginia and others. He most recently practiced medicine with Marietta Gynecologic Associates of Marietta, Ohio. Dr. Flemming served as chairman of the Planning and Zoning Commission. for the City of Ravenswood and was a member of Jackson County Developmental Center. H also belonged to American Legion General George Post #159, Williamstown, and Masonic Lodge, Biloxi, Miss. In addition, he was a Cub Scout leader and an active member of the Ravenswood High School Choral and Band Boosters. His hobbies included stained glass crafting, woodworking and gardening. He lived in Grantsville until 1964. He was employed for 20 years by the Small Business Administration as a business and industry specialist. Zion. He was preceded in death by one brother, Dale Gunn of Grantsville.His wife reports that he was proud of his West Virginia heritage and that he was a Golden Horseshoe winner. He enjoyed the Chronicle and looked forward to it every week. As a young man, he worked folding the paper and spent time reading the old back issues. He had a natural curiosity about everything concerning Calhoun County and West Virginia history. Joann said, "He will be sadly missed by all of us who loved him. Hamilton, 76, of 206 Elm St., Moorefield, died Saturday, Mar. 21, 1998, at his residence. Born Dec. 12, 1921, in Grantsville, he was the son of the late George and Losie (Knotts) Hamilton. He also was preceded in death by one son and two brothers. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy (Porter) Hamilton; one son, John Mark Hamilton; one daughter, Susan Hamilton Rogers; one brother; four sisters; one grandson; and one great-grandson. Judge Hamilton was a veteran of the U.S. Navy Air Service during World War II and served in the Philippine Islands and other parts of the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Duffey Memorial United Methodist Church; member of Masonic Lodge, VFW, W.Va. Judicial Association, W.Va. Bar Association, and Hardy County Bar Association. He held Senior Judge Status in the State of West Virginia, and was a past president of Moorefield Lions Club. Judge Hamilton received his law degree from West Virginia University College of Law in 1950, and held a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree. Before being elected as judge in 1976, he practiced law for several years as partner of the late Ralph J. Bean of Moorefield. Although Judge Hamilton took his chosen life's work seriously, he never took himself too seriously. He told of an old boy he had in court that approached the bench after his case was completed. He leaned over the bench and said, "John, you sure look cute in that dress!" His life can be summarized in three words: Family, God and Service. Few, if any conversations with Judge Hamilton failed to include his family and an inquiry about yours. He was proud of his family and showed a sincere concern about others. He cherished the old family values and respected people that shared the same values. He talked about his family in court and often mentioned his grandson, John Daniel, when he was making a point to prospective jurors. Judge Hamilton was a devoutly religious man and he practiced his religion not only on Sundays but during the week in everything he said and did. Although he didn't carry religion on his shoulder like some mantel, it was obvious to anyone who knew him that he was a religious man. He didn't brag of his religion, but he also was not ashamed of it. In fact he felt so strongly about his beliefs, he always instructed prospective jurors concerning its importance. He reminded them that their forefathers did not attempt to make or recognize any separation of religion from the State or governmental duties and that they specifically provided in both the Federal and State Constitutions that no elected officer of the government can serve in office until he first takes his oath of office and although the oath is administered by man (Clerk, etc.), it is taken to God. He would say: "So while we hear it freely proclaimed that Church and State (Courts) are separate, this is not now nor has it ever been true." Although Family and God were an important part of who Judge Hamilton was, he will probably be best remembered for the service he provided to his fellowman. He served in the United States Navy, as Prosecuting Attorney for Hardy County for two terms, and as Judge of the 22nd Judicial Circuit for 16 years. Since his retirement he had spent the last five years, two months, and 21 days as a Senior Status Judge and as a mediator. He loved the law and respected the profession. Although he disagreed with some of the modern trends, such as lawyer advertising and the public disdain it engendered, he firmly believed that the practice of law was, is now and should always be, an honorable profession and he fostered this belief in the way he conducted himself and the way he treated lawyers who practiced before him. He is what former President Teddy Roosevelt called a "Man of the Arena." As President Roosevelt once said: "It is not the critic who counts, not the one who points out how the strong man stumbled or how the doer of deeds might have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena; whose face is marred with sweat and dust and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions and spends himself in a worthy cause and who, if he fails, at least fails while bearing greatly so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat." Hopefully, each of us will commit to further the legacy that he left us of God, Family and Service to our fellowman. HAMILTON, VICTOR 2/26/1998 Longtime Grantsville attorney Victor Hamilton, 75, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 1998, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. He was born in Grantsville, a son of the late Lorentz C. and Nelle Dodson Hamilton. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, having received two Bronze Stars, American Theater Ribbon and World War II Victory Medal for his service in the China Theater. He graduated from Calhoun County High School in 1940 and from T.C. Williams School of Law, Richmond, Va., in 1951. He began his law practice in Grantsville with his father, attorney Lorentz C. Hamilton. After his father's death, he continued his practice and became a noted civil litigant and trial lawyer in both state and federal courts. He served as prosecuting attorney, fiduciary commissioner, mental hygiene commissioner and special commissioner in Calhoun County. In 1988, he established the law firm of Hamilton and Morgan in which he remained active until his death. He was a member of the board of directors of Calhoun Banks and was a member of Knotts Memorial United Methodist Church, Grantsville. Surviving are his wife, Helen Hamilton; one daughter, Janet Coberly of Riyhadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; one son, Roger Hamilton of Charleston; one brother, Lorentz Carr Hamilton of Grantsville; and two grandchildren, Carolyn Hope and Theodore Coberly, both of Fairfax, Va.
