He was born in Reedy, the son of the late Robert Lee and Clara Amanda Burrows Anderson. He was a member of Five Forks Community Church. He was a farmer, worked in oil fields, and was a former cemetery attendant for Stump Funeral Homes. Surviving are his wife, Irene Wilson Anderson of Parkview Nursing Home, and one son, Jeffrey A. Anderson of Five Forks. He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters, Flossie Newhart, Sudie Harris and Blondena A. Morrison. Services will be held Thursday, 10:30 a.m., in conjunction with his sister, Blondena A. Morrison, at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. She was a homemaker and a life member of Oka Church. She was a life member and past president of Amvets Auxiliary. Ayers, 74, of Clarington, Ohio, died Wednesday, May 13, 1999, at Belmont Community Hospital, Bellaire, Ohio. He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Iva and Ruth Freshour Ayers. He was retired from Ohio Ferro Alloy Corp., Clarington. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5565, Powhatan Point. He was a Protestant. Surviving are one son, Austin E. Ayers, Jr., of Clarington; two daughters, Joyce Starkey of Woodsfield and Lena Vallelonga of Powhatan Point; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several cousins in Calhoun County. She was a former employee of Shady Lawn Nursing Home, Dalton, Ohio. Surviving are her husband, Robert G. He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Floyd and Della Carter Bailey. He was a driller in the oil and gas industry and a farmer. He was a member of Frozen Run Baptist Church, Shock. Surviving are his wife, Beulah Brady Bailey; one sister, Doss Hurley of North Carolina; and one son-in-law, Kenny Fisher of Glenville. She was born in Rocksdale, the daughter of the last Salathiel and Florence Starcher Hickman. She was a Glenville State College graduate and a retired Calhoun County elementary school teacher. She was a member of Stoney Point United Methodist Church, Arnoldsburg Homemaker's Club, West Fork Community Action, Phoebe Cunningham Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, Calhoun County Retired Teachers Association, and Grantsville Chapter of Order of Eastern Star. Surviving are one son, Gary Bailey of Vienna; one daughter, Wilma Siers of Parkersburg; four grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oris W. Bailey. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Burial was in Gibson Cemetery, Arnoldsburg. BALL, HADSEL 8/26/1999 Hadsel B. Ball, 82, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at Roane General Hospital. He was born and was a lifelong resident of Frametown Road near Stumptown and was the son of the late Howard and Flora Boone Ball. He was a graduate of Glenville State Normal School and West Virginia University where he earned a master of music and fine arts. He was a musician and a retired music teacher and band director having taught eight years at Normantown High School and 34 years at Spencer Junior High School. He was a member of Glenville United Presbyterian Church and Glenville Historical Society, served on Folk Festival committees, was a Boy Scout leader, and was a Mason for over 50 years. Surviving are three sisters, Pauline Kelly of White Oak, N.C., Mildred Wise of Clarksburg and Hope Moore of Pomeroy, Ohio; niece, Pam O'Brien of Spencer; cousins, Gary Knight and Graham Knight of Grantsville; special friends, Timothy Jurkovich and family of Spencer; and several other nieces, nephews, and cousins. He donated his body to West Virginia University Human Gifts Registry in Morgantown where it will be interred. Memorial service arrangements are incomplete at this time. BANFIELD, LAWRENCE LEE 2/4/1999 Lawrence Lee Banfield, 62, of Chloe, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, at his residence following a long illness. He was born in Russell, Ky. He was a former employee of Union Carbide Corp. and member of Trout Unlimited, Kanawha Valley Chapter. He was a Presbyterian by faith. Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Jane Banfield; two sons, Larry Banfield, Jr., of Parkersburg and Arnie Banfield of Chloe; and one daughter, Cara Banfield of Pinch. She was a member of Chapel Baptist Church, Nobe. Surviving are one daughter, Virginia Simmons of Grantsville; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. She was born in Clarksburg, the daughter of Jackie Lee and Darlene Ross Smarr of West Union. She was a supervisor of nutrition at Doddridge County Senior Center, West Union, and was a Protestant. Surviving in addition to her parents are her husband, Michael Barnes; two children, Erika Barnes and John Michael Barnes of Pennsboro; four sisters, Jackie LeBel, Bridgette Greaver, Anita Johnston and Jessyca Smarr, all of West Union; two brothers, Brent Smarr of West Union and Greg Nicholson of Grantsville; and paternal grandmother, Goldie Underwood of West Union. Burial was in Ellenboro Masonic Cemetery, Ellenboro. BARNES, ELEANOR 7/8/1999 Eleanor "Toots" Barnes, 78, of Grantsville, died Thursday, July 1, 1999, at Braxton Memorial Hospital, Gassaway. She was born at Joker, the daughter of the late Everett and Ella F. Hathaway Gainer. She was an elementary school teacher at Red Hill School during World War II and was retired from Rubber Fabricators, Inc., Grantsville. Surviving are her husband, Fred O. Barnes; one son, Richard Barnes of Parkersburg; one daughter, Elizabeth Anne Smith of Grantsville; two grandsons, Thomas C. Barnes of Charleston and Jason Bradley Smith of Grantsville; four granddaughters, Ramona B. MacGregor of Athens, Ohio, Shannon Dee Johnson of Grantsville, Meredith L. Cornell of Huntington and Heather Ann Smith of Lexington, Ky.; and 11 great- grandchildren. Barnes, 85, of Vaughan Road, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at his residence. He was born in Big Springs, the son of the late William O. and Adeline Cunningham Barnes. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 88th Blue Devil Division in Italy and Africa. He served in three major campaigns and was awarded the Bronze Star. He attended Glenville State College and West Virginia Wesleyan College and graduated from West Virginia University, where he earned a master's degree. He taught at the University of Florence, Italy, following World War II, and also attended the University of Florence. He was a retired Calhoun County High School teacher with 39 years of service and a retired State Farm Insurance agent in Grantsville with more than 30 years of service. Surviving are one son, Richard Barnes of Parkersburg; one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Smith of Grantsville; one brother, Shirley Barnes of Sissonville; two grandsons; four granddaughters; and 11 great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Barnes, and one son, Dr. William Barnes. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Kevin Church officiating. She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Stonewall Jackson and Alberta Amos Bell. She was a homemaker. Surviving are two daughters, Dollie Marks and Eva Marks, both of Mt. Zion; one sister, Thelma Jenkins of Mogadore, Ohio; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett W. Basnett, and one daughter, Betty Basnett. She was born in Warren, Ohio, the daughter of Jeffrey C. Richards of Big Springs and Robin Coolidge Greer of Newton Falls. She attended Warren Christian School and Newton Falls Schools and was active in several sports. Surviving in addition to her parents are one sister, Tammy Jo Richards of Newton Falls; two step-sisters, Marianne Greer of Sedonna, Ariz., and Melinda Ritchie of Massillon, Ohio; paternal grandmother, Glenna Richards of Big Springs; and maternal grandmother, Rosalee D. Burial was in Windham Township Cemetery. BEALL, HUNTER, JR. 3/18/1999 Hunter B. Beall, Jr., 75, of Rosedale, died Monday, Mar. 8, 1999, at his home following a sudden illness. He was born in Gilmer County, the son of the late Hunter and Oma Brown Beall. He was the former owner and operator of Beall's Gulf Service Station, Parkersburg, and was retired from Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., Parkersburg, with 20 years of service and was a former partner in H&R Block, Glenville. He was a member of Rosedale United Methodist Church where he had served as Sunday School superintendent and teacher, song leader and youth director. Surviving are his wife, Millie Sams Beall; two daughters, Pamela Fleming of Parkersburg and Amy Self of Glenville; one son, Hunter L. Beall of Weston; two step-daughters, Kim Fury and Sharon Bell, both of Parkersburg; two sisters, Eula Miller of Parkersburg and Anne Glover of Glenville; nine grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren. Bee, 89, of Parkersburg, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at Worthington Manor Nursing Home. He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late George W. and Mattie Hardman Bee. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and an active member of Baptist Temple. He retired after more than 40 years as an optician in affiliation with Doctors Cochran, Robinson, Conrath and Hall. He was a member of American Legion Post 15, Parkersburg, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1118, Parkersburg, Ohio Valley Literary Group, and W.Va. Poetry Society. He was a tutor for Literacy Volunteers of America. Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Mary L. Day Bee; two sons, Billy E. Bee of Parkersburg and Robert E. Bee of Lansing, Mich.; one grandson; two granddaughters; and five great-grand-children. He was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Bee; three brothers; and two sisters. He was born in Apollo, Pa., and was a well-known area oil and gas producer and owner of Beecher Drilling Co., Grantsville. He was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, Grantsville. Surviving are one brother, James Beecher of Grantsville; a nephew, James Prusack of Grantsville; and two brothers-in-law, Dale Rupert and Arthur Prusack, both of Munday. He was born in Annamoriah, the son of the late Earl and Monnie Bell. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He moved to the Barberton/Norton area in 1946 and retired from B&W with 391/2 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Betty J. Gregory Bell; four daughters, Mary "Judy" Meadows and Norma Gregory, both of Norton, and Doris Blankenship and Hilda Tshudy, both of Wadsworth, Ohio; two sons, Lloyd Gregory and Joseph Gregory, both of Wadsworth; two brothers, Thomas Bell of Norton and Shirley William Bell of Clinton, Ohio; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Fostine Bell of Parkersburg and Mary Louise Bell of Annamoriah; and special friends, Jay and Marla Wheeland and daughters. BISHOP, PAUL G. 2/11/1999 Paul G. Bishop, 82, of Sand Fork, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, Weston. He was born at Rosedale, the son of the late Lewis and Ursala Dobbins Bishop. He was a self-employed timberman and sawmill operator. Surviving are his wife, Gathel King Bishop; two sons, Arden Bishop of Warren, Ohio, and David Bishop of Sand Fork; three daughters, Ruth James of Sand Fork, Ermal Harris of Katy, Tex., and Mary Gumm of New Fairfield, Conn.; three brothers, Lester, Chester and Edward Bishop, all of Sutton; two sisters, Gae Lane of Spokane, Wash., and Hazel Brown of Wheeling; nine grand-children; and two great-grandchildren. She was originally from Gilmer and Calhoun counties, the daughter of the late Asa B. and Sarah Margaret Leech Harris. She had resided in Ft. Myers for 21 years. She obtained her first grade teaching certificate from Glenville Normal School in 1916 and taught in one room schoolhouses in Ritchie, Gilmer and Lewis counties. She was a member of Mt. Liberty United Methodist Church since 1914, and former member of Bull River Woman's Club, Women's Auxiliary of VFW and American Legion, Grantsville, Daughters of the Confederacy, Akron, Ohio, Grantsville Rebekah Lodge #52, where she held numerous offices including noble grand. In 1971, she was Calhoun County Belle at the West Virginia Folk Festival. Surviving are two daughters, Katheryn Ellyson, with whom she made her home, and Margaret Iwana Stevens of Cleveland; two sons, Albert P. and Duane H., both of Ft. Myers; five grand-daughters, Sharon Wick, Shelley Palmer, Sharlene Miller, Rebecca Mason and Jeanie Forepaugh; two grandsons, Joseph Ellyson and Douglas Black; three great- granddaughters, Sherry Chancey, Kristin Palmer and Danille Ellyson; two great-grandsons, David and Dean Mason; one great-great-grandson, Steven Chancey; two step-great-grandsons, Daniel Mason and Kurt Wick; one step-great-granddaughter, Dawn Lake; three step-great-great- grandsons, Dustin, Stephen and Landon Lake; one step-great-great- granddaughter, Allysa Lake; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar P. Black, Jan. 2, 1977; three brothers, Earle, Howard and Paul Harris; and one sister, Nellie H. McClain. BOATRIGHT, ELLA 7/29/1999 Ella Whytsell Boatright, 89, of Akron, Ohio, formerly of Mt. Zion, died Monday, July 19, 1999, in Pebble Creek Nursing Center, Akron. She was born in Altizer, the daughter of the late George and Mini Starcher Whytsell. She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and was a homemaker. Surviving are three step-daughters, Leola Shillingburg and Olena Hopkins, both of Akron, and Wanda Stone of Hemingway, S.C., and three step-sons, Hildreth Boatright of Belpre, Ohio, Howard Boatright of Akron and Ardell Boatright of Marshall, Ill. He was a mechanic and operator of large construction equipment and was a member of International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 18, AFL-CIO, Parkersburg. He was a member of the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Surviving are one step-son, Donald V. Wilson and family of West Virginia; and several nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Sprague Haverty, and three brothers. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II having served in Scotland, Northern France, Ardemes, Rhineland, Central Europe, and Africa. He received the Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart having been wounded in action Dec. 16, 1944, in Germany. He was a deacon in Prosperity Baptist Church, Big Springs, and was a member of Eureka Lodge #40, AF&AM, Grantsville. He was retired from Bet-Ro, Inc., Glenville. HELMICK, ENNIS MEANS 2/4/1999 Ennis Means Helmick, 78, of Princeton, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, in a Princeton hospital. She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Edward E. and Susie Wilson Means. She was employed by the former Pocahontas Fuel Company as an industrial nurse and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Nursing Corps, 1944-1946, with the rank of first lieutenant. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Princeton, and United Methodist Women and Myrtle Bane Circle No. 2 of the church. She had lived in Princeton since 1948. Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Corbet L. Hersman, 74, of Elyria, Ohio, died Thursday at EMH Regional Medical Center after a short illness. He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Garnett and Fannie Hersman. He moved from Cincinnati to Elyria 47 years ago and worked at Moen Co., Elyria, as a buffer for 31 years before retiring in 1987. He served in the Army during World War II. He attended Liberty Baptist Church, Elyria, and Elyria Seventh Day Adventist Church. He enjoyed making and repairing jewelry and renovating and remodeling houses. Surviving are his wife, Nanette Skinner Hersman; one son, Joseph Wayne Hersman of Springfield, Mo.; one grandchild; and three sisters, Geraldine Moore of Frametown, Frances Mowrey of Parkersburg, and Lovern Bragge of Clarksburg.
