DESCENDANTS OF JAMES W. & SUSAN CHRISTINA [STEMPLE] STURM: Prepared by Dwight E. Sturm. Generation No. 1 1. JAMES8 STURM (JACOB7, NICHOLAS6, JOHANN JACOB5, JOHANN JACOB4, CHRISTIAN3, JOHANN PETER2, SEBASTIAN1)1,2,3,4,5,6 was born 1839 in Meadowville, Randolph (now Barbour) County, (West) Virginia, and died Bet. 1872 - 1874 in Calhoun County, West Virginia. He married SUSAN CHRISTINA STEMPLE7 March 24, 1857 in Barbour County, (West) Virginia8, daughter of ISAAC STEMPLE and CATHERINE WILT. She was born 1838, and died Bet. 1870 - April 05 1879 in Calhoun County, West Virginia. Notes for JAMES STURM: In 1866, James W. Sturm and Susan Christina bought 87 acres on Mudlick Run, Calhoun County, West Virginia, from Michael Stump. This land was evidently located where Mulick Run enters into Sycamore Creek, because when they later sold the land, it was listed as being on Sycamore Creek. James and Susan sold this property in 1870 to Elias Little, husband of Susan's sister, Nancy Stemple. James and Susan then bought one hundred acres of land on Pine Creek, a branch of the Little Kanawha River, the deed being made on September 3, 1870. The deed, however , was not presented to and recorded by the Calhoun County Recorder until September, 1872. He bought the land for "ten Hundred dollars, paid in his (Yeager's) hand," from Alfred and Martha J. Yeager. Though the deed indicates that the purchase price was paid in full on September 3, 1870, it is possible that a promissory note was made, and the deed not recorded in James' name until it was paid off. Several Sturm families, along with Susan Christina's parents and most of their children, settled in Calhoun County at about the same time. They moved from Barbour County, West Virginia, which is an area of more gently rolling hills and wider, flatter valleys, to an area, as cousin Marvin Stemple puts it, composed of "vertical farms". Why did they make this choice to exchange good farmland for subsistance farmland? The most logical answer is that it was due to conditions in Barbour County following the War for Southern Independence. These migrating families were either Confederate soldiers or sympathizers. James Sturm had been captured twice in Calhoun County during the war and sent to Camp Chase Military Prison in Columbus, Ohio. He had been operating as a Confederate partisan in Calhoun County, probably because there was much sympathy for the Confederate cause, and resistance to Federal authority. The Federal Army had occupied Barbour County after the "affair" at Philippi, and families of Confederate soldiers had a very difficult time, being persecuted by neighbors with Federal leanings who were emboldened by the presence of Federal troops. The service units for some of those Barbour to Calhoun County Sturms were: James W., Pvt. Co. K, 31st Virginia Regiment Volunteers; later fought as Partisan and was a prisoner-of-war on two different occasions. Amos K. Sturm, Corporal, Co. K, 31st Virginia Regiment. He was wounded in action June 9, 1862 at Port Republic, fighting under Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. John N. Sturm, Pvt., Co. H, 31st Virginia Regiment, son of Henry Sturm, captain of Co., K and a first cousin of James and Amos Sturm. Lair Dayton Sturm, another son of Captain Henry Sturm. His unit affiliation is unknown, but known is the fact that he was also a prisoner-of-war at Camp Chase. More About JAMES STURM: Middle initial: W. WM 1 Son-At Home WV VA VA Marion WM 10 Brother-Farmer WV VA VA Marion Sturm was living with his brother Isaac at this time because their parents, James W. and Susan Christina Sturm had already died. He moved to Randolph County, West Virginia with Isaac and Amanda within a year after the 1880 Census, and died there on November 11, 1888. The cause of death was listed simply as "fever", a sad end to a short life. For those unfamiliar with census listings, the first abbreviation after each name is for sex and race [i.e. White Male, White Female], the second is that persons age at the time of enumeration, thirdly is the occupation. The first state abbreviation is for state of birth, second is the state of birth of that persons father, and the third for that of the mother. Later censuses gave more information about each person in the household.
