FIVE GENERATIONS OF WILSONS by Ilene Wager. Rt. 2 - Box 34, Big Springs, WV. 26137. 1987 What is a Hillbilly? (Preface reprinted from WEST VIRGINIA HILLBILLY, magazine with Jim Comstock, the editor. Published about 30 years ago.) A hillbilly is someone who can't look out his window without seeing the big hills, and feeling small and big at the same time because of them. He's somebody with a heritage of Independence his hill-folk family gave him, because cut off from other people by the mountains they had to make it by themselves. Someone stubborn and tenacious because he learned that while faith can move a mountain, it might take a little time. He's friendly, because mountains teach that there are more important things to fight than people and if your closest friends are both sides of a mountain distant they're better held onto than fought with. And he's industrious. Even living lazy in mountain country can work a man pretty hard. He's some body who knows that only God can make a tree, and figures that if he troubled to make a whole state of forested mountains, that the state must be specially blessed. A West Virginia hillbilly is a man with wealth underfoot, wealth towering over his head and only the beauty all around him coming easy. He has his troubles but plenty of toughness and faith to stick it out, sometimes looking poorer than he feels until it is time. I have heard people use the name of hillbilly in a down grading manner.. I am proud to be a hillbilly and the heritage of my fore fathers and the way of life they worked and fought so hard to keep. The only people I know in West Virginia who apologizes now for being a hillbilly is the fellow who isn't sure he is one. And have you noticed, those who come here are as proud as the most deep rooted of us to be known as a hillbilly? It was the stubborn hillbillies who settled and tamed these mountains, with patience and faith that stubborn, tenacious, Independent hillbilly was the backbone of this state, and I am proud to be a part of this West Virginia heritage and am proud to be called a "hillbilly." George Washington said, "Give me but a banner to plant upon the mountains of West Augusta" (this was the name of this area in Washington's day) "and I will gather around me the men who will lift our bleeding country from the dust and set her free." and in 1776 he did. "He knew his Hillbillies. " This history is dedicated to my forefathers who helped to make West Virginia the great state it is. Thomas Wilson - 1765-1826; George Wilson -1811-1861; Robert E. "Hal" and his father, Cedric Andrews, are also buried in Saunders Cemetery, but in a different section. 1a. Male unnamed son, lived only three weeks Calvin Wilson died many years before his wife, Ellen. Ellen continued farming by hiring men in need of work. They helped her to keep her farm profitable, and always spoke of her as being fair. She was one of the directors of The Calhoun County Bank and rode a horse to Grantsville to attend the meetings. My (Ilene Wager) Grandfather was Thomas Wilson, his wife (my Grandmother) died very young, leaving him with three young sons and an infant daughter. Ellen Wilson helped him many times without expecting a return. He tried to show his gratitude by working hard in her fields. She said "no one could stack her wheat like my grandfather did." She very often took care of his little son (my father) while grandfather was working for her. My father called her "Aunt Ellen" with much fondness. Grandfather's oldest son, Leman Wilson, has written much of the early history of the Wilson family. This has been a big help to me in my effort. My father is Bernard Wilson. Calvin and Ellen Wilson were very prosperous. They owned a store during the oil field days of the 1890's. They cut timber and raised cattle. They owned a large cattle scale, located close by the road, it was used by many people from neighboring farms. Nearby there was a spring that was said to never run dry, and a large wooden watering trough was located there. All those with teams, or with horses or cattle knew this as the place they could stop to water them. Aunt Ellen Wilson and my great-grandmother Shimer both came from Maryland and often talked of life when they were young girls. 3. Robert Earnest Wilson - b. 15 Sept. 1839 in Monongalia Co., Va. (near Fairview, now Marion Co.) m. Jane Ellison - b. 17 May 1837 d/o Temperence ?Weaver and Zacareah B. Ellison, of Gilmer Co. Jane died 8 Sept. 1921 at Crooksville, Ohio, where she lived with her daughter, Anne Starcher. Old age was the cause of her death, she was 84. R.E. & Jane Wilson lived at Broomstick, in the same location that Glen and Rose Ritchie are living at the present time (1987). He died 26 April 1916. They are buried in the Broomstick Cemetery, Calhoun Co., WV. Robert Ernest and Jane Ellison Wilson were my (Ilene Wagers') father's grand-parents. They raised a large family and were church members. My father has happy memories of living with them much of the time during his formative years. He has related many experiences he remembers, to his family. my favorite was of my great - grandmother Jane. She was very religious and would often "get happy" while in church, going down the aisle waving her arms and shouting. One night at a revival meeting at Big Root, she became "happy" and hit a water cooler that came down on a mans head. He was sitting on the floor beneath it. During the Civil War, Robert Wilson was a C.S.A. soldier. He first served with the Moccasin Rangers of Calhoun County, there he was a Captain. Next he was in Company C, 19th Virginia Cavalry. He enlisted in Dec. 1862, was discharged 1865. He was part of a group sent to Spencer to blow up the railroad and depot. He took cover behind a rail fence when a bullet glanced off the fence entering the right side of his neck. He lay unconscious for hours. His companions fled leaving him for dead. In time he rallied but could neither see nor walk. When at last his sight returned to him, he was able to crawl to the home of Al Hopkins. He was there for six weeks, but recovered and returned to his outfit. Sometime in the 1880's the bullet worked out under the skin on his shoulder. Dr. Isaac Thomas removed it. This wound caused him to suffer in his old age, his spine being affected, causing him to stoop. The Robert and Jane Wilson owned a large tract of land on Broomstick Ridge, and as their large family married, each child was given some of the acreage to build a home, and many raised their families there and many of their decendants are now living at Broomstick, Big Springs and Grantsville, WV.
