Following is a listing of some of the Civil War soldiers of Calhoun County. Where known, soldiers are identified by which side they supported. "Union" is used to identify troops of the Grand Army of the Republic and "C.S.A." identifies troops of the Confederate States of America.

Born 5 Mar. 1818, died 23 Feb. 1863. Killed in action on Blown Timber 23 Feb. 1863 by Home Guards. Was shot in the yard at his home, then shot a second time in his wife's arms as she begged them not to shoot him again. Buried in the Bailey Cemetery on Allan Tizer farm. BAILEY, William W. (H.), [See PHOTO], 2nd Sergeant, Co. E/F, 14th Virginia Cavalry. Born Tazewell Co., Va. 10 June 1816. Enlisted at Minnora, Calhoun Co., Va. 26 Sep. 1862. Absent in charge of horses January to April 1863. Served as Sergeant orderly of Company F, afterwards forage master for regiment. Participated in battles at Winchester, Gettysburg, twice at Brandy Station, Cloyd's Mountain, Bulltown, and numerous skirmishes. Discharged 12 Sep 1863 (had only one arm). Paroled at Charleston 25 May 1865, age 48, 5' 11", dark complexion, blue eyes, gray hair. Farmer, age 53, Washington Township, Calhoun Co. 1870 Census. Died 28 Oct. 1897. Born Calhoun (Lewis) Co.1841-1843. Age 17, farmer, Calhoun Co. 1860 Census. Enlisted Williamsburg, Greenbrier County, W.Va. 1 Mar. 1863. Not stated if present or absent on muster-in-roll dated March 1863. Enlisted in 20th Virginia Cavalry, Company H, at Camp Northwest, W.Va. on 1 June 1863. Elected 1st Lieutenant 4 June 1863. Commanding Company H, 2 Oct. 1863. Absent in arrest 31 Oct. 1863-31 Aug. 1864. Absent 1 Sep. 1864-31 Oct. 1864 (dated 30 Dec. 1864) in arrest. Absent 15 Dec. 1864, listed as prisoner of war since 31 Oct. 1863. Deserted. Reported to U.S. Forces 25 Dec. 1864, took the oath of allegiance and gave his bond. BISHOP, John, Private, Company I, 53rd Kentucky Infantry. Enlisted 1864, discharged 1865. Union.
BLAIR, Lindsey, born 11 Sept. 1837, Greenup, Ky., died Clarksburg, W.Va., 6 Oct. 1930. He was a son of Jeremiah and Ruschia Mullin Blair. He enlisted in 1861 at Burning Springs in Company K of 2nd West Virginia Infantry, serving under Capt. Andrew Grubb. Soon after the "Philippi races," 3 June 1861 he was in the Laurel Hill and the skirmish at Corrick's Ford, north of Elkins, where Gen. Robert S. Garnett, Confederate general, was killed. Blair took part in thirty-seven engagements, many important battles along the Greenbrier River, was in the Richmond and Potomac campaigns. Captured at Jackson River in Virginia, he was imprisoned at Andersonville Prison for twelve months, suffering exposure to the weather, thirst, starvation, and inhumane treatment. He said he lived on a pint of cornmeal a day in the prison. At the end of the
year he was transferred to Belle Island Prison on the James River in Virginia, where he remained for four months and until the end of the war. Men froze to death, he said, in that prison. Mustered out at Wheeling he returned home and married Sarah Johnson and they had six sons and daughters; after her death he married Frona Deems, daughter of Isaiah and Harriet Nutter Deems and they had ten children. BLAND, Henry H., Private, born 15 Apr. 1841, Richland Co., Ohio, died at Howard, Okla., 6 May 1907, buried Bethlehem Cemetery, Calhoun Co. Enrolled 14 Oct. 1861 at Wheeling, Va., Company K, lst Regt., West Virginia Infantry. Honorably discharged at Wheeling on 28 Nov. 1864, 20 years, 5'10', sandy complexion, black eyes, dark hair. Contracted typhoid fever in June 1862, which resulted in rheumatism, heart and back problems. Was treated in hospitals at Alexandria, Va., Point Lookout near Washington, D.C. Married Perie Ann Renner at Greene Co., Pa., 31 Dec. 1865, children: Martha, Susan, Mary, Lorney, Clara, Andrew J., Rachel, James, Virginia, Levi, and Arthur. Union.

[According to the 1864 WV Adjutant General's Report, Hyram/Hiram Bonar, 29, born in Marion County, was in the 12th Infantry, 27 Aug 1862-Feb 1863, at which time he was honorably discharged on account of disability. -- At age 33, he mustered in with Company "B" of the 17th Inf on 30 Aug 1864. The 1864 Adjutant General's Report of his record in the 17th Infantry states: "Served 9 months in 12th Inf. Honorably Discharged." ]

Laughlin, Union soldier, by Confederate soldiers in Pocahontas Co. on or about the 24th day of July 1863. Deserted. Captured 30 Oct. 1863 in Calhoun Co. Confined at the Atheneum Prison 20 Nov. 1863. Transferred to Camp Chase 20 Nov. 1863. Confined at Camp Chase 21 Nov 1863. Desires to take the oath of allegiance 10 June 1864. Statement at Camp Chase 25 Jan. 1865 lists his age as 33 and from Calhoun County. He says he went to the store of Absalom Knotts (a rebel recruiting officer) who tried to persuade him to enlist in his company. Brannon refused and went home. Several days later he was taken by a guard of three men and sent to Monroe Co., W.Va. Deserted during the night of 30 Oct. 1863 and went home. Asks now that he be released. Released by order of the Secretary of War, 17 Feb. 1865, after taking the oath of allegiance. Petition submitted for his release. Description, age 33, 5' 7", dark complexion, black hair and blue eyes, farmer, resident of Calhoun Co., W.Va. Buried with second wife, Jane, in the Cottrell Cemetery in Beech. C.S.A.

Enlisted Company C, 11th West Virginia Infantry, 22 Dec. 1861 at Elizabeth, Wirt Co. Was elected second Lieutenant by the company, served until his capture in the Battle of Spencer, Roane County, 2 Sept. 1862. Paroled by General Jenkins on condition he would do nothing further against the Confederacy. Resigned 2 Oct. 1862. Fought in Battle of Arnoldsburg 6 May 1862. Company C was encamped at Camp McDonald when attacked by Partisans from Roane, Calhoun, Braxton, and Gilmer counties. Lieutenant Poling and his company took a strong position in the home of Peregrine Hays, county sheriff, then a member of the Partisans. The superior guns of the Union soldiers forced the Partisans to retreat. Federal troops suffered one wounded. the Partisans lost two killed and one wounded. Union.

His company was ordered to Gettysburg while stationed at Harpers Ferry but battle ended before he arrived. He was ill with fever, hospitalized in Parkersburg, Harpers Ferry, Va., and Frederick, Md. Received pension. Was present at Lee's surrender. Enlisted Aug. 1862 at Camp McDonald, Arnoldsburg, discharged 12 June 1865 at Richmond. Union.
