BLAIR, Lindsey, born 11 Sept. 1837, Greenup, Ky., died Clarksburg, W.Va., 6 Oct. 1930. He was a son of Jeremiah and Ruschia Mullin Blair. He enlisted in 1861 at Burning Springs in Company K of 2nd West Virginia Infantry, serving under Capt. Andrew Grubb. Soon after the "Philippi races," 3 June 1861 he was in the Laurel Hill and the skirmish at Corrick's Ford, north of Elkins, where Gen. Robert S. Garnett, Confederate general, was killed. Blair took part in thirty-seven engagements, many important battles along the Greenbrier River, was in the Richmond and Potomac campaigns. Captured at Jackson River in Virginia, he was imprisoned at Andersonville Prison for twelve months, suffering exposure to the weather, thirst, starvation, and inhumane treatment. He said he lived on a pint of cornmeal a day in the prison. At the end of the year he was transferred to Belle Island Prison on the James River in Virginia, where he remained for four months and until the end of the war. Men froze to death, he said, in that prison. Mustered out at Wheeling he returned home and married Sarah Johnson and they had six sons and daughters; after her death he married Frona Deems, daughter of Isaiah and Harriet Nutter Deems and they had ten children. POLING, Nicholas, [See PHOTO], Lieutenant, born Aug. 1820 (or 1823), Randolph Co., Va., died 23 Apr. 1889, buried Sycamore Cemetery. Enlisted Company C, 11th West Virginia Infantry, 22 Dec. 1861 at Elizabeth, Wirt Co. Was elected second Lieutenant by the company, served until his capture in the Battle of Spencer, Roane County, 2 Sept. 1862. Paroled by General Jenkins on condition he would do nothing further against the Confederacy. Resigned 2 Oct. 1862. Fought in Battle of Arnoldsburg 6 May 1862. Company C was encamped at Camp McDonald when attacked by Partisans from Roane, Calhoun, Braxton, and Gilmer counties. Lieutenant Poling and his company took a strong position in the home of Peregrine Hays, county sheriff, then a member of the Partisans. The superior guns of the Union soldiers forced the Partisans to retreat. Federal troops suffered one wounded. the Partisans lost two killed and one wounded. Union.

His company was ordered to Gettysburg while stationed at Harpers Ferry but battle ended before he arrived. He was ill with fever, hospitalized in Parkersburg, Harpers Ferry, Va., and Frederick, Md. Received pension. Was present at Lee's surrender. Enlisted Aug. 1862 at Camp McDonald, Arnoldsburg, discharged 12 June 1865 at Richmond. Union.
