SIR:
     I have the honor to request that you will furnish from the records of the War Department a full report as to the service, disability, and hospital treatment of ALEXANDER HENDERSON, who, it is claimed, enlisted SEPT 1st, 1862, and served as a PRIVATE in Co. I, 6" Regt. W. Va. Vols. commanded by Capt. Charles Harrison and was discharged at Wheeling, W. Va., June 10", 1865 (1863).
     While serving in Co. I, 6" Regt W. Va. Vols, he was disabled by gun shot wound in right foot at Boggs Mills, W. Va., about Sept. 15" 1865 and was treated in hospitals of which the names, location, and dates of treatment are as follows: by regimental surgeon in regimental hospital.

ALEXANDER HENDERSON, a PRIVATE of Company "I," 6th Regiment W. Va. Inf. Volunteers, was enrolled on the 1st day of September 1862, at Grafton for 3 years, and is reported: on muster rolls from enrollment to April 30, 1863, present. May and June 1863, absent, building Block House.
July and August 1863, present and so reported to August 31, 1864.
September and October 1864, absent sick in Hosp'l at Clarksburg since Sept 14, 1864.
November and December 1864, present, same to Feb 28, 1865.
March and April 1865, absent to Feb 28, 1865.
March and April 1865, guard at Block House.
Mustered out with Co. as Private at Wheeling West Va. June 10, 1865.

     Regimental Hospital Records subsequent to Oct 63 not on file. Capt. John H. Showalter Fremont Neb. has certain records of this regiment in his possession.
     Records of this office furnishes no evidence of alleged wound.

GENERAL AFFIDAVIT

State of West Virginia, County of HARRISON, ss:
     In the matter of of ALEXANDER HENDERSON late Private Company "I" 6th Regiment, W. Va. Infy for Invalid Army Pension No. 559.290.
     On this 31st day of January A.D. 1887; personally appeared before me the Clerk of the County Court in and for the aforesaid County duly authorized to administer oaths, ALEXANDER HENDERSON aged 54 years, a resident of MOUNT CLARE in the COUNTY OF HARRISON and state of WEST VIRGINIA, whose Post Office address is MOUNT CLARE, Harrison County, West Virginia, well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows:
     That he is the identical Alexander Henderson, late a private in Company "I" 6th Regiment West Virginia Infantry Volunteers, whose claim No. 559.290 for an Invalid Army Pension is now on file at the Pension Office at Washington City, DC. -
     That affiant is informed that in his Original Application for Pension it is stated therein, "that he was wounded by a gun shot wound of right foot at Boggs Mill, Braxton County, West Virginia on or about September 15, 1865" - That if the date of said injury is as so stated as September 15, 1865 - the same is a clerical error - made by mistake of his attorney in making out his application for Pension.
     That affiant was wounded by gun shot wound in --? of big toe of right foot ball shattering toe on the 15th day of September 1863 - in skirmish at Boggs Mill - Braxton County, West Virginia.
     That the statement made by his two witnesses James Shields and A. B. Carwell - as to the date affiant was wounded viz - September 15th 1863 - is the true and correct date.

INABILITY AFFIDAVIT

State of West Virginia, County of HARRISON, ss:
     In the matter of of ALEXANDER HENDERSON Pension Claim No. 559.290.
     On this 13th day of May A.D. 1887; personally appeared before me the Clerk of the County Court in and for the aforesaid County duly authorized to administer oaths, ALEXANDER HENDERSON, a resident of MOUNT CLARE in the COUNTY OF HARRISON and state of WEST VIRGINIA, whose Post Office address is MOUNT CLARE, West Virginia - well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: That he is unable to comply with the requirements of the Pension Office as to furnishing the affidavit of Capt John Showalter of Fremont, Nebraska, who it was alleged had certain records of his Regiment, as to origin of his disability or to furnish the affidavit of physicians, who have treated him for gunshot wound of right foot since his discharge from service for the reason that he has not employed Physicians to treat his foot; as he had not the means to do so - he regarded the injury as permanent and he treated the same by applying poultices and linament which he prepared and purchased at different Drug Stores -. Affiant files herewith a letter he had written to Capt John H. Showalter, on the 3rd day of May 1887 - with said Showalters answer to said letter written thereon as a part hereof - marked letter "A."

     He respectfully requests that the testimony of his nearest neighbors, Presley B. Beach, and Lee A. Beach be accepted in lieu of medical evidences as to his condition and disability since discharge from service.

DECLARATION FOR ORIGINAL INVALID PENSION

State of West Virginia,
County of HARRISON, ss:
     On this 24th day of July, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and ninety 1890, personally appeared before me, F. J. Cunningham, a Justice in and for the County and State aforesaid, ALEXANDER HENDERSON, aged 58 years, a resident of West Virginia, County of Harrison County, State of West Virginia, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical ALEXANDER HENDERSON, who entered service during the War of the Rebellion under the name of ALEXANDER HENDERSON on or about the 7th day of September, 1862, as a private in Company "I" of the 6 Virginia Infantry commanded by Col. Wm (or W. M.) Wilkinson, and was HONORABLY DISCHARGED at Wheeling, West Virginia, on or about the 10th day of June, 1865, by reason of TIME OF ENLISTMENT EXPIRED; that his personal description is as follows: Age, 58 years; height, 5 feet 7 inches; complexion, DARK; hair, DARK; eyes, HAZEL. That he is now suffering from CATTAR IN THE HEAD AND RHEUMATISM and that the said disability is of a permanent character, and is not the result of vicious habits, and that it incapacitates him from the performance of manual labor in such a degree as to render him unable to earn a support, and that this declaration is made for the purpose of being placed upon the pension roll, under the provisions of the Act of June 27, 1890. That he has NOT been employed in the military or naval service otherwise than as stated above....

     That since the 7th day of September, A.D. 1865, he has not been employed in the military or naval service of the United States......

     He hereby appoints George E. Lemon, of Washington, D.C. his true and lawful attorney, to prosecute his claim. (No. 559.290)

That his Post Office address is Mount Clair, County of HARRISON, State of WEST VIRGINIA.

DECLARATION FOR WIDOW'S PENSION

State of West Virginia, County of Harrison, SS:
     On this 5th day of February, A.D. one thousand nine hundred and one, personally appeared before me, A. S. Long, A Notary Public within and for the County and State aforesaid, Bahama V. Henderson, aged 65 years, a resident of the Town of Clarksburg, County of Harrison, State of West Virginia, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is the widow of Alexander Henderson who enlsited under the name of ALEXANDER HENDERSON at --- on the 1 day of September A.D. 1862, in Company "I" 6th Regiment West Virginia Infantry Volunteers and served at least ninety days in the late war of the Rebellion, who was honorably discharged at Wheeling, W.Va. on June 10" 1865 and died January 2, 1901.
     That she married under the name BAHAMA V. BEACH, to said ALEXANDER HENDERSON, on the 25th day of December 1855 by Rev. (name unknown) at FAYETTE COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA and there being no legal barrier to such marriage.
     That there is no public record or private record of their said marriage of which she has any recollectuion now in existence.
     That she has not remarried since the death of the said Alexander Henderson.
     That she is without other means of support than her daily labor. That names and dates of birth of all children now being under the age of sixteen years of age of the soldier are as follows: (blank)
     That she has never heretofore applied for a pension and the number of her husband's pension certificate Act of 1890 was 670.077
     That she makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United Statees under the provisions of the Act of June 17, 1890. She hereby appoints Alexander C. Moore of Clarksburg her true and lawful attorney to prosecute her claim. That her post office address is Clarksburg, County of Harrison, State of West Virginia.

GENERAL AFFIDAVIT

Presley B. Beach, apparently the brother of Bahama V. Beach, gave an affidavit in support of her pension claim. He said he had known her since her birth and that she and her husband, Alexander Henderson, had a house on his property and lived there for 33 years.


My lineage - Uncertain about Alexander's parents. I think Bahama's father was John J., shown in the Census records below. Her brother, Presley B., gave an affidavit in the pension claim of Alexander Henderson.
