A Comprehensive Family History: ANCESTORS OF WARD BRAY

     Octavius Bray is listed in the roster of Captain Andrew Glass' Company "B" 5th Ohio County Militia, on roll dated 6 June 1863. He then mustered in with Company "A" 4th (West) Virginia Cavalry, originally organized for 6 months service, according to the 1864 West Virginia Adjutant General's Report. However, the company mustered in 6 July 1863 and didn't muster out until 15 March 1864. Octavius served as Quartermaster Sergeant.

     Born at Newbridge (Pontypridd), Glamorganshire, Wales, 14 Sept 1836, Octavius Bray (aka Charles Bray) was the son of John and Sarah Jane (Alcock) Bray.

     On 5 May 1842, the family immigrated to the United States aboard the ship Byron, traveling from Cardiff, Wales to New York, New York.

     Octavius Bray married Amelia Harris, the daughter of Thomas Harris, Sr. and Hannah Baker. The marriage took place 15 Dec 1856 at Ohio County, (W) Virginia (Bk 3, page 97, Ohio County marriages)

     Two more daughters, Annie Kate and Dora, were born after 1870. Amelia (Harris) Bray died before 1880 and the youngest children were raised by members of the family.

     In 1880, Dora Bray was in the home of Amelia's brother, Thomas Harris, Jr. who had served during the Civil War as a 2nd Lieutenant in Captain John Carlin's Wheeling Battery "D" 1st West Virginia Light Artillery. Thomas and his wife, Anna Westwood, had no children of their own.
