Samuel Springer served in Co "H" , 1st West Virginia Infantry during the Civil War.

Pension application received from National Archives:

Samuel, 5 ft. 4 1/2 in., black hair & blue eyes, served in the Civil War as a private in Captain J. M. Bowers' Company "H", 1st WV Infantry Volunteers. Enlisted 5 Mar 1862, discharged 24 Oct 1862 at Philadelphia, PA, due to disability by diarrhea at New Market, VA, April 1862. Also had a dislocated right hip, sustained in skirmish with General Ewell's Rebel force in Lone Ray Valley, VA, May 1, 1862; run over by a Cavalryman at the battle of Port Republic, VA. A resident of Reader, WV, he was 33 at time of enlistment. Original Pension application declarations by aquaintances, Allen Bell & Elias Earl, both of Pine Grove, WV, on 26 July 1890. Family info names wife, Sarah E. Fluharty, married in Wetzel County, WV with record in County Clerk's office. Children: Angenora, born 29 Aug 1849; Alpheus 2 Aug 1855; Lyda, 7 Mar 1851; Marriah, 1 July 1857; William, 29 Dec 1863; Lewis, 14 Feb 1851; Mary, 8 Oct 1869. Other affidavits in the pension file by James L. Fluharty, John Shepherd, James C. McAlister, Ben Martin, James Harris, S. K. Harris, W. J. Springer, Joseph Cumberlidge.

In the 1830 census of Monongalia County, VA/WV, William & Mary Fluharty have a daughter <5, probably Sarah Elizabeth, and one 5-10, which fits with Nancy Fluharty who was born 25 Feb 1825 and married Richard Lemley. The daughters are not listed in some published Fluharty genealogies but appear in the LDS Ancestral File.

In the LDS Ancestral File, Sarah "Elizabeth" is also called "Betsy".

When did Sarah "Elizabeth" die? Where? Samuel and Elizabeth are living independently in the 1880 census. Elizabeth is "deceased" in the 1898 Hardesty's bio of James Harris. Samuel is a widower, living with son, Jackson Springer, in the 1900 Wetzel County Census. Daughter, Anna Marie, was married to her second husband, James Harris, and was living in Wirt County, WV. The first of James Harris' four wives was Elizabeth Springer, Samuel's sister. Possibly, Samuel was living with James & Anna Marie at the end of his life.

Birth date of Angenora from 1900 Census, Green District, Wetzel County, WV. Death date per death certificate. She and husband, Jones Fluharty, were first cousins; Sarah Elizabeth Fluharty Springer was the sister of Henry Fluharty, father of Jones.

In one census Angenora is listed as having been born in OH.

1880 Wetzel County, WV Census lists Apheus (misspelled), 25, with wife Virginia. Biographies in the Wetzel County History book, published by the Wetzel County Genealogical Society, refer to Alpheus as "Alfred", and name his wife as Mary Myers. Was he married twice? He is a widower in the 1900 Green District, Wetzel County, WV Census.
