Descendants of Abner Black (1811-1889)

I started researching my ancestors only two years ago, which makes me a 
relative newcomer to the genealogy community. I've hesitated to submit 
family tree information to this site because I was afraid that my 
research wasn't up to the standards set by the others who have 
submitted family files they have researched for many more years. I 
finally decided to do so because I've come to some of the famous "brick 
walls" we all find in our research and am looking for assistance! 
Please do not take my information as "gospel" – it is only a "Work In 
Progress". I contains a lot of proven facts, but also some assumptions 
ands "leaps of faith". If you find any errors or additions which might 
help me in my search, please let me know and I'll make the corrections 
as soon as possible. I need your help!!

 

FIRST GENERATION

1.  Abner Black was born on 23 Dec 1811 in PA.1  His parentage is 
unknown. He was indentured in 1823 in Ohio Co., VA.2  NOTE:  Abners 
'adoption' papers are on file at WVU, Colson Hall, Book 19-537. Year 
1823. They state:
"Record that the (???) of the poor of Ohio County bind Abner Black to 
Henry Eckels until he arrives to the age of fifteen, his years supposed 
to be now eleven years of age & that he receive six months schooling." 
(There is a marriage record between Henry Echols & Elmira Lewis - Ohio 
Co., VA, 4 Jun 1818.)  He appeared on the census in 1830 in Washington 
Co., PA - Finley Twp..3  He resided 311 Market St., Wheeling, VA in 
1839.4,5  He appeared on the census in 1840 in Ohio Co., VA - Wheeling 
- 1st Ward.6

He resided 311 Market St., Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV in 1843.5  He 
appeared on the census in 1850 in Marshall Co., VA - 33rd District.7  
Also living with his family was Samuel Acker, Brickmason, 28, b. VA.  
He owned 152 acres of land - Sherrard, Marshall Co., VA on 4 Apr 1855.8  
NOTE: Per Bob & Mildred Black, on 4 Apr 1855, Hugh and Rosanna Nichols 
sold 152 acres of land to Abner Black. They had bought the land on 18 
Sep 1851 from Easter Brown and heirs.  He appeared on the census in 
1860 in Marshall Co., WV.7  He appeared on the census in 1870 in 
Marshall Co., WV - Union Distr..7  Also living with family in 1870 was 
"Wickam, Rebecca - 25, Keeping House, b. WV". Abner listed as having 
$2, 584.00 (personal property) and 660 (real estate).  He appeared on 
the census in 1880 in Marshall Co., WV - Union Distr..7  He signed a 
will on 20 Jul 1887 in Marshall Co., WV.9  
NOTE: Will of Abner Black, Marshall County Will Book 2, Page 358.

I, Abner Black of Union District - Marshall County, West Virginia, do 
make this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills 
at any time made.
1st  It is my will that all my just debts and funeral expenses shall be 
paid.
2nd  I give, devise and bequeath to my daughter, Rosana Elizabeth 
Grandstaff and her heirs the sum of Five Hundred and Sixty Four 
dollars, she having received already the sum of Four Hundred and Thirty 
Six dollars out of my estate.
3rd  I give, devise and bequeath to my daughter, Margaret Ann Pierce 
and her heirs, the sum of One Thousand dollars, and it my will that the 
above sum shall be expended by my Administrators in purchasing a piece 
of ground and house and have the same deeded to her and her children 
for a Home of theirs.  
4th  I give, devise and bequeath to my son, George W. Black, the sum of 
Seven Hundred and Ninety Two dollars and 50 cents, he having already 
received Two Hundred and Seven Dollars and 50 cents out of my estate.
5th  I give, devise and bequeath to my daughter, Amanda Wolf, the sum 
of One Thousand Dollars.
6th  I give, devise and bequeath to my son, John H. Black, the sum of 
Seven Hundred and Ninety Eight dollars, he having received Two Hundred 
and Two dollars out of my estate.
7th  I give, devise and bequeath to my son, Hugh N. Black, the sum of 
One Thousand dollars.
8th  I give, devise and bequeath to the children of my daughter, Sarah 
Downing, now dead, the sum of One Hundred dollars each. Their names: 
James, John, Albert, Rosa and Mary Downing.
9th  I have given my son, Isaac D. Black, the sum of One Thousand 
dollars and this amount is deducted out of the price of a piece of land 
I have this day sold to him as is witnessed by an article of this date, 
leaving a balance of Two Thousand dollars to be paid by him to my 
administrators or executors and to be paid by them to my legal heirs as 
is directed in this my will, the same to be paid within two (or ten?) 
years by Isaac D. Black without interest.
10th  I have given my son, James D. Black, the sum of One Thousand 
dollars, and this amount is deducted out of the price of a piece of 
land I have this day sold to James D. Black, as is witnessed by an 
article of agreement of this date, leaving a balance of Four Thousand 
dollars to be paid by him to my administrators or executors and to be 
paid by them to my legal heirs, as is directed in this my will, the 
same to be paid within ten years from this date, without interest.
11th  It is my will and desire that if there is any money left after 
paying the aforesaid heirs as directed in the above will and , settling 
all expenses, that my administrators shall pay whatever is left to my 
Grand Child, Charlie Black. I nominate and appoint my three sons Hugh 
Black, John Black and James D. Black to be the Executors of this my 
last will, no bond or security required of them. 
In Witness thereof, I the said Abner Black do subscribe my name this 
20th day of July 1887.

A paper writing bearing date on the 20th day of July 1887 purporting to 
be the last will and testament of Abner Black late of this County, 
deceased, was this day fully proved before me in my office by the oaths 
of W.H. Bumgardner and Henry Behemes (?) the subscribing witnesses 
thereto, and is ordered to be recorded. Hugh Black, John Black and 
James D. Black, the executors in said will named, qualified as such by 
taking the oath as required by law, no bond or security being required 
by the terms of said will.

He died on 19 May 1889 in Marshall Co., WV.9,10  Cause of Death - 
Heart. Abner's death record was reported by his wife. The space for 
names of parents was left blank.   He was buried in Allen Grove 
Cemetery, Sherrard, Marshall Co., WV.11  He was a Farmer, Wagoner, 
Wagon Maker.  NOTES: (1) 1880 Marshall County Census says he was born 
in WV, other sources say he was born in PA. Birthplaces for parents are 
left blank in all records - census, marriage, death record.
(2) Per Fred Gantzer: "Abner's naturalization papers are supposed to be 
on file with the Western PA Genealogical Society."
(3) Charles Black of Valpraiso, IN, says he remembers his grandfather 
visiting relatives in Washington Co., PA and he thinks this is where 
Abner is from. This is possible, since his "naturalization papers" are 
in the Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society and also Abner 
appeared in the 1830 census in West Finley, Washington Co., PA.

He was married to Mary Ann Cotts on 31 May 1835 in Washington, 
Washington Co., PA.12  NOTE: Names in marriage record listed as: Aber 
Black and Mary Cotts.  
  Mary Ann Cotts was born on 12 Dec 1818 in VA.11  She appeared on the 
census in 1850 in Marshall Co., VA.7  She appeared on the census in 
1860 in Marshall Co., WV.7  She appeared on the census in 1870 in 
Marshall Co., WV - Union Distr..7  She appeared on the census in 1880 
in Marshall Co., WV - Union Distr..7  She died on 12 May 1896.4  She 
was buried in Allen Grove Cemetery, Sherrard, Marshall Co., WV.11  
NOTES: (1) Probably related to family of Conrad Cotts in Ohio Co., WV. 
Found Abner living next to George Cotts in 1840 census in Ohio Co. 
Also, there is a great similarity between the naming of the Cotts' 
children and the Black children. 
(2) From "History of the Pan Handle, West Virginia, 1879": 
George W. Nichols married Rose Cotts in 1841. They had children named: 
Hugh, John W., James D., Joseph W., Sarah E., William A., Isaac C., 
Emma T., Mary L., and Elenor May.
Their son, John W. Nichols married Lula Cotts (parents unknown).
Conrad Cotts came to Wheeling from Pittsburgh, PA about 1810.  

Abner Black and Mary Ann Cotts had the following children:

was a Hostler in 1890/91 in National Rd., 4 miles E. of 
Wheeling, WV.5  He died on 25 Sep 1915 in Sherrard,

			Per  Abner Black's will (dated 20 Jul 1887): "I have 
given my son, Isaac D. Black, the sum of $1000 and this 
amount is to be deducted out of the price of a piece of 
land this day sold to him as is witnessed by an article 
of this date, leaving a balance of $2000 to be paid by 
him to my administrators or executors and to be paid by 
them to my legal heirs as is directed in this my will, 
the same to be paid within two (ten?) years by Isaac D. 
Blakc, without interest."
	10	ix.	William A. Black was born on 18 Dec 1857 in VA.13  He 
appeared on the census in 1860 in Marshall Co., WV.7  
He appeared on the census in 1870 in Marshall Co., WV - 
Union Distr..7  He died on 11 Mar 1882 in Sherrard, 
Marshall Co., WV.11  He was buried in Allen Grove 
Cemetery, Sherrard, Marshall Co., WV.11

SECOND GENERATION

2.  Rosanna Elizabeth Black was born on 28 May 1836 in Marshall Co., 
VA.14  She appeared on the census in 1850 in Marshall Co., VA.7  She 
appeared on the census in 1860 in Marshall Co., WV.7  She appeared on 
the census in 1870 in Marshall Co., WV - Sand Hill Distr..7  She died 
on 5 Sep 1915 in Dover, Tuscarawas Co., OH.14,15,16  She was buried in 
Stone Church Cemetery, Ohio Co., WV.14  NOTE:  Per her father, Abner 
Black's, will (dated 20 Jul 1887):
 "I give, devise and bequeath to my daughter, Rosana  Elizabeth 
Grandstaff and her heirs the sum of $564, she having received already 
the sum of $436 out of my estate."

She was married to Samuel Grandstaff (son of Jacob Grandstaff and Sarah 
Rodefer) on 20 Dec 1855 in Marshall Co., VA.17  
  Samuel Grandstaff was born on 12 Nov 1823 in Ohio Co., VA.14  He 
appeared on the census in 1850 in Marshall Co., VA.7  He appeared on 
the census in 1860 in Marshall Co., WV.7  He appeared on the census in 
1870 in Marshall Co., WV - Sand Hill Distr..7  NOTES: Listed on census 
as Samuel Grindstaff - $3,000.00 & $355.  He died on 30 Mar 1898 in 
Washington Co., PA.14,15,16  He was a Farmer 1860 & 1870 in Marshall 
Co., WV - Sand Hill Distr..7  He was buried in Stone Church Cemetery, 
Ohio Co., WV.14  NOTES: (1) Tree in Ancestry.com lists him as Samuel 
Faris Grandstaff, Sr.
(2) From "History of the Pan-Handle, West Virginia 1879":
"Samuel Grinestaff was a son of Jacob, and grandson of Adam Grinestaff. 
The Grinestaffs first settled in Ohio county in 1780 or 1781.  Samuel 
was born in 1823, on the farm where he now resides, in Marshall  
county. He received a common school education, and engaged in farming 
as  a business. In 1855, he married Rosanna Black, daughter of Abner 
Black,  of Marshall county. They have seven children, three sons and 
four daughters."

	18	vii.	Alma Rosanna Grandstaff was born on 14 Jan 1874 in 
Marshall Co., WV.13  She died ?.

3.  Margaret Ann Black was born in 1837 in Marshall Co., VA.17  She 
appeared on the census in 1850 in Marshall Co., VA.7  She appeared on 
the census in 1860 in Marshall Co., WV.7  She appeared on the census in 
1870 in Marshall Co., WV - Union Distr..7  NOTE:  In 1870 Census - 
Margaret A., single,  age 33, Keeping house, listed with parents in 
Union distr.  She appeared on the census in 1880 in Ohio Co., WV.6  
NOTE: 1880 census, listed with husband and three children in Ohio 
County Census.  She died in 1915.18  She was buried in Short Creek 
Cemetery, Ohio Co., WV.18  Per Charles Black  
NOTES: In Abner Black's will (written 20 Jul 1887):
"I give and devise to my daughter, Margaret Ann Pierce and her heirs,

Margaret Ann Black and Unknown had the following children:

She was married to Walter H. Pierce on 25 Aug 1874 in Marshall Co., 
WV.17  Walter H. Pierce was born in 1844 in Marshall Co., WV.17  He 
appeared on the census in 1880 in Ohio Co., WV.  He died ?.  He was a 
Farm Hand.6  Margaret Ann Black and Walter H. Pierce had the following 
children:

	20	i.	Lemuel Pierce was born in 1875.6  He died ?.
	21	ii.	Walter Pierce was born in 1877.6  He died ?.
	22	iii.	Annie Pierce was born in Jul 1879.6  She died ?.

4.  George W. Black was born in 1840 in Ohio Co., VA.7  He appeared on 
the census in 1850 in Marshall Co., VA.7  He appeared on the census in 
1860 in Marshall Co., WV.7  He appeared on the census in 1870 in 
Marshall Co., WV - Sand Hill Distr..7  He appeared on the census in 
1880 in Ohio Co., WV.6  NOTES: In 1880 census in Ohio County, there is 
a Theodore Conner, age 4, living with his family, listed as gr son.  He 
died in 1911.9  He was buried in Stone Church Cemetery, Ohio Co., WV.11  
He was a Farmer.7  NOTES: Per Abner Black's will (dated 20 Jul 1887):
"I give, devise and bequeath to my son, George W. Black, the sum of 
$792.50, he having already received $207.50 out of my estate."

He was married to Virginia Adeline Grandstaff (daughter of Jacob 
Grandstaff and Sarah Rodefer) on 14 Aug 1856 in Marshall Co., WV.17  
  Virginia Adeline Grandstaff was born about 1834 in Ohio Co., VA.7  
She appeared on the census in 1850 in Marshall Co., VA.7  She appeared 
on the census in 1860 in Marshall Co., WV.7  She appeared on the census 
in 1870 in Marshall Co., WV - Sand Hill Distr..7  NOTE: 1870 Marshall 
County Census - Sand Hill District #10 - lists her as living with the 
family of Hiram Elliott - next door to George Black. Probably an error 
on the part of the census taker, since her husband is listed as #11.  
She appeared on the census in 1880 in Ohio Co., WV.7  She died in 
1900.10  She was buried in Stone Church Cemetery, Ohio Co., WV.11  

  George W. Black and Virginia Adeline Grandstaff had the following 
children:

	28	vi.	Emily J. Black was born about 1869.7  She appeared on

Marshall Co., WV - Sand Hill Distr..7  He was born 
about Apr 1870.7,6  He died ?. NOTE: Could his middle 
name be Washington?. If so, is he the "Joe called Wash" 
referred to in the Orange Lemon Blake Family History?
			"Orange Lemon Blake was first married to Sarah Miraha 
Black whose mother was Adeline Grandstaff Black, mother 
of Joe called Wash who was first cousins to the 
Nickerson families."
	30	viii.	Addie M. Black was born about 1874.6  She died ?.

5.  Sarah Jane Black was born in 1843 in VA.7  She appeared on the 
census in 1850 in Marshall Co., VA.7  She appeared on the census in 
1860 in Marshall Co., WV.7  She appeared on the census in 1870 in 
Marshall Co., WV - Sand Hill Distr..7  Her place of birth is listed as 
OH. (possibly this means Ohio Co?)  She appeared on the census in 1880 
in Marshall Co., WV - Liberty Distr..7  She died before 1887.19  In 
will, Abner says his daughter, Sara Downing, is deceased.  (1) Per 
Abner Black's will (dated 20 Jul 1887):  "...to the children of my 
daughter, Sarah Downing, now dead, the sum of One Hundred dollars each. 
Their names: James, John, Albert, Rosa and Mary Downing."

She was married to David A. Downing (son of James Downing) on 13 Jan 
1865 in Washington Co., PA.20  David A. Downing was born in 1840 in 
WV.7  He appeared on the census in 1860 in Marshall Co., WV.7  With 
brother, James Downing.  He appeared on the census in 1870 in Marshall 
Co., WV - Sand Hill Distr..7  Grindstaffs lived at #s 17, 18 & 19.  He 
was a Farmer in 1880 in Marshall Co., WV - Liberty Distr..7  He 
appeared on the census in 1880 in Marshall Co., WV - Liberty Distr..7  
He died ?.  

Sarah Jane Black and David A. Downing had the following children:

	+31	i.	Mary E. Downing.
	32	ii.	Anna M. Downing was born in 1867.7  She appeared on the 
census in 1870 in Marshall Co., WV - Sand Hill Distr..7  
She appeared on the census in 1880 in Marshall Co., WV

married before death of Abner Black (will written in 
1887 - not mentioned as a child of Sarah Downing).

appeared on the census in 1870 in Marshall Co., WV - 
Sand Hill Distr..7  He appeared on the census in 1880 
in Marshall Co., WV - Liberty Distr..7  He died on 18 
Jun 1890.1  He was buried in Mt. Rose Cemetery, 
Marshall Co., WV.11  Mentioned in will of Abner Black 
(written 1887) as James, son of Sarah Downing. Left him 
$100.

	35	v.	William Albert Downing19 was born in 1872.7  He 
appeared on the census in 1880 in Marshall Co., WV - 
Liberty Distr..7  He died ?.  Listed as Albert in will 
of Abner Black (written in 1887), son of Sarah Downing. 
Left him $100.
	36	vi.	Rosa L. Downing19 was born in 1879.7  She appeared on 
the census in 1880 in Marshall Co., WV - Liberty 
Distr..7  She died ?.  Named in will of Abner Black 
(written in 1887) as child of Sarah Downing. Left her 
$100.

6.  Amanda Black was born on 1 Dec 1846 in VA.4  She appeared on the 
census in 1850 in Marshall Co., VA.7  She appeared on the census in 
1860 in Marshall Co., WV.7  She appeared on the census in 1880 in 
Belmont Co., OH.21  
NOTE: Name in 1880 census is listed as Mary.  She died on 21 Mar 1920 
in Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV.4  
NOTE: Per Abner Black's will (dated 20 Jul 1887): "I give, devise and 
bequeath to my daughter,  Amanda Wolf, the sum of $1000."

She was married to William Wolfe (son of Christian Wolf and Recha) on 
29 Mar 1866 in Marshall Co., WV.17  
  William Wolfe was born in 1835 in GER.17,4  He appeared on the census 
in 1880 in Belmont Co., OH.21  
NOTE: In 1880 census, occupation listed as Ferryman.  He died on 1 Aug 
1905 in Ohio Co., WV.4  He was an Owner/Operator of a Ferry Boat.4  
NOTE:  Per Fred Gantzer gedcom file - William owned & operated the 
ferry boat 'West Wheeling' out of the Belmont Mill Landing in Wheeling, 
WV.  

Amanda Black and William Wolfe had the following children:

	37	i.	Luella Wolfe was born about 1867 in OH.4  She appeared 
on the census in 1880 in Belmont Co., OH.21  She died 
?.

7.  John H. Black was born on 5 Feb 1847 in Sherrard, Marshall Co., 
VA.4  He appeared on the census in 1850 in Marshall Co., VA.7  He 
appeared on the census in 1860 in Marshall Co., WV.7  He appeared on 
the census in 1870 in Marshall Co., WV - Union Distr..7  He died on 6 
Mar 1925.11  NOTE: Per Fred Gantzer - died on 17 Nov 1910.  He was 
buried in Mt. View Cemetery, Marshall Co., WV.  NOTE:  Per Abner 
Black's will (written 20 Jul 1887), "...to my son, John H., the sum of 
$798, he having already received $202 out of my estate."

He was married to Hannah Maria Wolfe (daughter of Abraham Wolfe and 
Sabina Clemens) on 23 Jan 1868.4  Hannah Maria Wolfe was born on 6 Aug

"ORANGE L. BLAKE, 75, EXPIRES AT MCMECHEN"
     Following an extended illness, Orange Lemon Blake, 75, died Sunday 
at 12:30 pm at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. E. Strober, 1104 
Lincoln St., McMechen. He was a native of this county, but has resided 
in Waynesburg, Pa, for 10 years. He left there 7 weeks ago to visit his 
children.
    Mr. Blake was a retired painter. He was born on Fairview Ridge, 
Marshall County, and spent the greater part of his life in that 
community.
     Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lucy Blake, of Waynesburg; two sons, 
Wylie T. Blake, Jewett, Oh, and Kenneth Blake, of McMechen; six 
daughters, Mrs. J. W. Strong, Glendale, Mrs. C. L. Nichols, Flushing, 
Oh, Mrs. W. D. Minor, Glen Easton, Mrs. Charles Nickerson, Jewett, Oh, 
Mrs. H. E. Strober and Mrs. Russell Neff, McMechen. 
     One step-son, Henry McNelly, Jefferson, Pa; two step-daughters, 
Mrs. Mollie Corwin, Waynesburg and Mrs. Edith Hamilton, Dunbar, Pa; as 
well as 24 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren also survive.
     His first wife, Mrs. Sarah Black Blake, died in 1912. Five 
children also preceded him in death.
     The body has been removed to the Riggs funeral home in McMechen, 
where short funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 
o'clock. Services will be conducted at 2:30 o'clock in the First Church 
of God, McMechen. Rev. W. E. Turner will officiate and interment will 
be in McMechen cemetery.
