His occupation was farming for a time, also merchandise, and he filled the office of sheriff two terms, and was a state senator at the time of his death. He was a delegate to the famous Richmond convention of 1861, and therein opposed vigorously the scheme of secession, and favored in such an event the separation of Western Virginia, or if that was not possible, the annexation of the Pan-handle to Pennsylvania. He was so active in behalf of the Union that it was said that a price of $2,000 was set upon his head, but he reached home safely by way of Washington and Pittsburgh ii. JR. Notes for WILLIAM ALEXANDER: Judge William Alexander, born in Ohio county, W.Va., died at Moundsville, May 6, 1882, was in his lifetime one of the most distinguished citizens of Marshall county. He was the son of Rev. Joseph and Margaret (Davis) Alexander, the former of Scotch-Irish lineage. The parents were married in Ireland, and immigrating with one child, settled on Short creek. William Alexander was reared on a farm, and was educated in subscription schools solely, except one term in Franklin college. In August, 1835, he was made sheriff of Marshall county, and retained that position seventeen years. In the meantime he was a merchant at Moundsville from 1837 to 1842, then returning to the farm. In October, 1844, he was married to Ellen C., daughter of Nathaniel Tomlinson, an estimable lady who survives him. In 1852, at the time of the change in the constitution of the state, he was appointed aide to Gov. Pierpont and he held that place until 1863, when he was appointed aide to Gov. Boreman, colonel of cavalry and held that place until the close of the war. He was elected to the legislature for two terms during the years 1864 and 1865, and in 1876 was elected president justice of the county. He took an active part in politics as a republican, and was earnest in the work of the Methodist church, of which his widow has been a devoted member since 1851. The grounds used as a camp ground were purchased of the judge, who was interested in that project. More About WILLIAM ALEXANDER: Burial: 1926, Mt Rose Cemetery Located At Moundsville, Marshall Co, WV Occupation: Legislative Member/Colonel Of Calvery 1876 Notes for ELLEN C TOMLINSON: My wife's grand-father came here in the year 1770, and located his land built a cabin. He left the cabin in the care of Con O'Neal, and returned to Allegheny county, Md., where he married Elizabeth Harklas. He and his wife came here in 1772. While he was gone O'Neal killed turkeys, the feathers of which made them their first bed. He first discovered the mound in the west. He was out hunting and killed a deer south of the mound, and in coming home he found it. He then brought his wife and they went to the top of it. The ground on which it stands is called the flats of Grave creek. It was covered with large trees, and the timber on the flats was very thick, so you could not discern the mound till you were close to it. The land mound, under the will of Joseph Tomlinson, were left to his son,Jesse, in the year 1837 or 1838. Jesse, and A. B. Tomlinson, a grandson of Joseph, opened the mound. There was a large oak tree standing on the centre of the mound which they had to remove. WM. ALEXANDER. v. ELISABETH ALEXANDER, b. 1843, Marshall County, WV; d. 25 February 1890. 3. vi. Bowen is listed in the 1870 census in Marshall County and in the 1880 census as John with no middle initial. John K. Bowen has the same calculated birth date (based on information on his marriage certificate) as shown in the 1870/1880 censuses. Personal recollections from Frank Madden indicate that John K. Bowen, had a brother Charles who they visited often. This fact is also supported in the 1870/1880 census. I have contacted vital records in Moundsville WV and there are no birth records available for John Bowen. A request for a death certificate has been made to vital records in Ohio, his last known residence. The Census records are the only information available to indicate John Harvey Bowen is his father. The family has had in their possession the description of the Spicer Indian massacre and claim to be descendants of the Spicer-Bowen's. The following is offered by Joe Smertneck (grandson): John Bowen was a no-no conversation in any of his daughters households. My dad (Uncle Ab) told me the story about him. I only saw him once in my lifetime and that was at my mothers funeral held in Aunt Libby's home in Glen Dale. There was a standing warrant for his arrest in WV and my Uncle Steve was chief of police in Glen Dale. Just about the time they were ready to close the coffin he made an appearance. Aunts Mary and Libby were horrified and he panicked when he saw Steve. He was a big man (physically) and he gave us (momma's kids) each a box of chocolate covered cherries. Then he hauled ass...like real quick. Steve didn't bother him. From that day to this, anytime I see a chocolate covered cherry it reminds me of him. From that day on I have never been fond of that kind of candy. He abandoned his wife and three children which to me was unforgiving. Aunt Mary (Gram) told me that when he died she and Lib got a small amount of money... but I don't think Aunt Mary enjoyed it. had she ever told the family the story? Probably not... she had more style and class. 1900 Census Marshall Co. -Cameron District 2nd July Sheet 21 Bowen, John K. born May 1868. father/mother b. WV w. Mary E. b. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Paul Godparents were Francis Kirlun and Anna Holiscek (possibly his Aunt) While at the funeral for John Supan, Mike Supan (Grandson) and I (Jim Supan-grandson) had the pleasure of eating lunch next to John's brother, Dick Supan. Dick told me the most unusual fact that Paul Supan left Glen Dale because Knute Rockne died in a plane crash in 1931. That's a funny "cause and effect" but it turns out to be true. Pop quit coal mining and working at the steel mill to get a job at the Fokker Aircraft Company located right next to his house in Glen Dale, which closed in 1931, basically putting Pop out of a job. Scanning the internet I found the following histories which verify Dick's comment. Anyway that's how we became known as Southern Supan's when Pop landed in Norfolk, Va. Anthony Fokker founded an American branch of his company as early as 1921, marking the start of an important contribution to the development of air traffic in the New World. In 1924 Fokker's foothold in the USA assumed the form of an independent company, the Atlantic Aircraft Corporation (later named Fokker Aircraft Corporation and then General Aviation Corporation), which eventually had plants in Teterboro, New Jersey, Brighton Mills, New Jersey, and Glendale, West Virginia. In the late twenties the US Fokker concern had grown to become one of the largest aircraft manufacturers in the world. On March 31, 1931, Knute Rockne, a famous football coach and former college football star, died in a plane that lost a wing and crashed between the towns of Cottonwood and Bazaar, Kansas. As Capt. Robert Fry flew the plane in murky weather, Jess Mathias, the copilot of the plane (a Fokker F-10A) Public concern over air safety leads to the demise of wood-wing aircraft. Anthony Fokker withdrew from the American theater in 1931, finding outlets in the Netherlands for his tremendous energy. (Editor Note: no mention that this may be due to highly public crash) 1930: Formed as General Aviation Corp when General Motors Corp acquired Fokker Aircraft in 1929. 1930: General Aviation Mfg Co, Baltimore MD with 1930-33 acquisition of Dornier, Berliner-Joyce, Fokker, Pilgrim (American Airplane & Engine Corp) and Thaden (Pittsburgh All-Metal Aircraft Co). 1934: Became North American Aviation Inc. 1935: General Aviation officially dissolved. From Aerofiles: History of Fokker, Atlantic, Fokker-Hall, and General Aviation: 1931: Ended operations because of the Depression and a much- publicized crash of an F-10 on 3/31/31 in which famed football coach, Knute Rockne, and seven others were killed. The Louis Marx toy factory in Glendale WV was opened in the early 1930's and occupied the site of the old Fokker Aircraft plant.
