A TRIBUTE TO MRS. ETHEL BRIGGS
(1999)
Anyone who has done genealogical research in Marshall County, or in the surrounding counties, is probably familiar with the name, "Ethel Briggs."
Mrs. Briggs, now 83, lives in New Martinsville, Wetzel County, WV. She has been involved with genealogy for many years, long before it was the popular hobby it is today, and certainly before there was an Internet. She was the founder and former owner of the genealogy-oriented Tri-County Researcher, now owned by Linda Goddard Stout.
Often, with her friend, Ada Finnicum, Mrs. Briggs would go to the area cemeteries, recording every inscription. She kept a hoe in the car, and as they walked, they would step hard on the grounds to feel the buried, fallen stones. They would dig the stones up, place them against another marker or a tree, and clean them off.
"We used a rag and a brush to clean them off good, and then covered the inscriptions with chalk. Then, stepping back aways, we could read them, as they were outlined with the chalk. It worked wonders and didn't harm the marker in any way." She adds, "Even that way, we found some that we couldn't read the name or date, but it was worth a try".
Mrs. Briggs' legacy is her record books that benefit all of us with ancestors from the Marshall-Tyler-Wetzel County area. For Marshall County, she compiled a book of cemetery headstone readings, and she has generously consented to its publication on this page.
"You have my permission to put these on the Internet and just go ahead and use them in any way you want to because it will help lots of folks......Keep up the good work....You are helping many.....I just love this work!"
In addition to helping countless people with their research, Mrs. Briggs is a volunteer at the Latter Day Saints' Family History Center in New Martinsville.
To Mrs. Briggs, we offer our thanks for all of their efforts that memorialized so many tombstone readings before they disappeared. Her contribution is invaluable to present and future generations and is deeply appreciated.
