Submitted to the Virtual Marshall County Genealogy Society by T. Vernon Anderson, VernAnderson@compuserve.com Descendants of Colonel Thomas Cresap - 6 FEB 1999 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FIRST GENERATION 1. Thomas Cresap Colonel was born in 1694 in Skipton, Yorkshire, England. He died in 1790. He arrived in MD in the early 1700's. Carl Bode in his "Maryland, A History" provides us with an inside look at the man: -Cresap, violent but not vicious, proved to be the essential frontiersman for Maryland, fearing no authority and faring gladly to the western edge of civilization. The newly formed sons of Liberty in Frederick County under tough old Tom Cresap were the most stalwart resisters of the stamp act and provided a stimulating example to similar groups froming in Baltimore and in Anne Arundel County. Ring-tailed roarers are rare in Maryland history. The colony's most splendid sample of the brawling, myth-making frontiersman was Tom Cresap, its own Daniel Boone, who pushed westward while Boone was still a baby. He sat defiantly in irons in a Philadelphia jail, a tough-fibered man. Then in his thirties, he lived to be ninety-six. He'd become involved in a dispute because the Maryland government had granted him 500 acres close to the broad Susquehanna River, about twenty-five miles into what is now PA. The PA authorities considered it to be in PA then. (At that time, the MD border was supposed to reach to the 40th parallel, way beyond the property dispute). Never inclined to yield to official, especially if they were outsiders, Cresap got into a lively variety of clashes with them in the early 1730's. In his monograph on Cresap, Kenneth Bailey describes many of these clashes. The one which sent him handcuffed to Philadelphia began in autumn 1736, when the PA authorities issued a warrant for his arrest, charging him with nothing less than murder. Following several abortive efforts to serve the warrant without bloodshed, the sheriff of Lancaster Co collected two dozen armed Pennsylvanians and besieged Cresap's stoutly built log house. When the sheriff demanded his surrender (we still have the sheriff's report)--"Cresap, with several horrid oaths and the most abusive language against the proprietor and people of Pennsylvania, answered that they should never have him until he was a corpse." They did have him, however, after setting fire to his log house. Shackled, he was marched through the streets of Philadelphia to jail. Along the way, he gibed to one of the guards, "Dam it Aston, this is one of the prettiest towns in Maryland!" During the next half-year Cresap remained so obnoxious that the Pennsylvania authorities entreated him to leave their jail and go home. He scornfully refused. It wasn't until a royal "cease-fire" proclamation arrived in August 1737 freeing the prisoners taken by both colonies, for Maryland had retaliated, that he let himself be released. Once out of jail, Cresap traveled purposefully westward, (probably with the encouragement of an acquaintance, Daniel Dulany). There were two valleys he longed to explore in the Maryland West, one on either side of the Catoctin Mountains, the Monocacy Valley and the Antietam Valley. We don't know whether the Maryland government, mindful of his doughty services in the border war, gave him land outright or not. But in the late 1730's, he patented a 550 acre tract on Antietam Creek, close to the Potomac. He christened it Long Meadow and built another of his stout log housed ont it. That far west there were still many Indians and he tried his hand at fur trading with them. To finance it, he mortgaged Long Meadow to Dulany for 500 pounds. However, he had bad luck with his fur trading. He had better luck with his land ventures. In May 1740, he bought a tract about five miles from the junction of the north and south branches of the Potomac. Although less than fifty miles west of Long Meadow, it lay right on the Maryland frontier. Here Cresap settled in 1741 and made his permanent headquarters. He called the settlement Skipton after the Yorkshire town where he'd been born but others just called it Cresap's or, after a while, Old Town. It became the junping off place for voyagers into the wilderness. George Washington, who slept in a good many places, slept ther more than once. He noted, for instance, in his diary for March 21, 1748, that he'd traveled all day "in a continued rain to Colonel Cresap's right against the mouth of the south branch." He added wryly that the road was the worst "that was ever trod by man or beast." Throughout the early 1740's Cresap speculated in land on his and Dulaney's behalf. Dulaney used him as he had another man, John Bradford, fifteen years before, as a scout for the best land, as a surveyor of it, and as an agent in selling much of it to others. Thanks to Cresap he now realized a profit on land warrants he'd taken up even in Bradford's time. pg 2015-17 TCR, submitted by Beverly Myers, RD #2, Box 21, Moundsville, WV He was married to Hannah Johnson on 30 APR 1727 in MD. Michael Cresap Captain was born on 29 JUN 1742 in Oldtown, MD. He died on 18 OCT 1775 in New York, NY. He was buried in Trinity Church, New York, NY. Contest for possession of Round Bottom, Marshall Co, WV The first settlement made in it was made in connection with the settlement in the Flats of Grave Creek by Joseph, James, and Samuel Tomlinson: they were followed by Michael Cresap about two years after they had made the first improvement in it. Tomlinson brothers made their improvement in the upper end and the Cresap improvement was made about the middle of the bottom. A slight dispute arose between the Tomlinson brothers and the heirs of Michael Cresap but it was soon adjusted to the satisfaction of both parties and for years after that they thought that they were the owners of that fine bottom but were destined to be disappointed and to lose the land. Mr Tomlinson stated that in the year 1772, Michael Cresap of Old Town, sent fourteen men to make improvements in Round Bottom and they made two improvements on the banks of the river about the middle of the bottom but did not fence them. From there they went down the river to make improvements on other land claimed by Mr. Cresap. In the spring Mr Cresap sent Francis Purcell and family to Round Bottom to make improvements and take care of his interest. Mr Purcell cleared six acres of land, fenced it, built a cabin and raised a crop of corn on the ground. He remained there until the spring of 1774, when the breaking out of Dunmore's War, drove the settlers from this section to Old Fort Redstone on the Monongahela River. Michael Cresap died in 1775 and some time after his death there was a dispute about the land, and appears that the Cresap heirs wanted to hold the entire bottom. Mrs Cresap was notified to be present or send a representative to meet Mr Tomlinson at a meeting of the commissioners that the General Assembly of Virginia would send out to adjust claims. They were to meet at the Morgan settlement, near where Morgantown now stands.. This meeting was held in the year 1779, and a nephew of Mrs Cresap was there and he and Mr Tomlinson agreed to divide the bottom as nearly equal as possible without regard to improvements, by a line from the river to the hill. The commissioners ordered the clerk to make a note of the agreement and so state the same on their certificates, which was done and the matter was thought to be adjusted for all time. On the eighth of August 1798, Archibald McClean purchased from General Washington all of that tract of land and received a deed for it. The tract purchased by Mr McClean was to contain 587 acres be the quantity more or less for $5,870, making the price ten dollars per acre. General Washington offered the land for sale as is or he could have it resurveyed and Mr McClean could pay for the land contained in it. Mr Mcclean chose to buy the land as is. By a careful survey some years after it was found that the tract contained 1293 acres. Mr McClean sent tenants to the land to clear it and make improvements and then found that others claimed the land which he had bought and paid for. He leased a large tract in the lower end to Jonathin Roberts who proceeded to improve it. A suit was soon started and was many years in court before it was settled and when concluded and a decision was rendered it confirmed the claim of General Washington and confirmed the title of Mr McClean to the land. Michael Cresap, Jr., son of Michael Cresap who caused the first improvements to be made in Round Bottom in Cresap's name, in a bill of complaint in a chancery case against Archibald McClean and Jonathin Roberts, stated that his father died in 1775 and that in his will he bequeathed Round Bottom to the three daughters, Mary, Elizabeth, and Sarah, who were minors at the time of the death of their father. He stated that one Luthur Martin married Mary and in the year 1781 he got a certificate of right of settlement and had a survey made in 1784 and the same year the plot and certificate of the survey were returned to the Register's office and in July, 1785, General Washington entered a caveat which was dismissed in 1787 and a grant was issued to Luthur Martin and his wife and her two sisters, Elizabeth and Sarah Cresap. In the final disposition of the estate of his father, he acquired the land of the said Luther martin and the two Misses Cresap. He stated that he was in peaceful possession of the land for a long time until Archibald McClean came to the place with a deed from General Washington. He made the charge of fraud on the part of General Washington in getting the title to the land. He seemed to think that he obtained the field notes of a private survey and made a plat which covered 587 acres and sold the tract to Mr McClean. He stated that the tract contained 1293 acres. A suit was started in the early part of the last century and was carried through the various courts and was not decided until the 28th of April, 1834. The case was decided in the Supreme Court of Appeals in the city of Richmond on the above date in favor of the claim of General Washington. This decision made the claim of Mr McClean valid. See Scott Powell's "History of Marshall County, W. VA.", pages 91-95, for the complete text of this case. He was married to Mary Whitehead on 4 AUG 1764 in St Pauls Espic. Ch, Philadelphia, PA.
