Submitted to the Marshall County, WV Virtual Genealogy Society by Karen E. Bridgeman (Cookebyte@aol.com) *Enix/Enochs/Eniex descent of Karen Bridgeman: Brice-Reason Sr.- Tobias-John Wesley-Juanita GENERATION 1 WHO WAS JOHN ENOCH(S) ? Parentage for Brice and his sister comes to us by way of the Bissett Family booklet published by M. W. Bissett (Jacob-Brice-Thomas) for their 1925 reunion held in Deep Valley, PA There were no other clues given and no wife mentioned. Some Bissett descendants believe John was the son of Col. Henry Enochs II. This has not been substantiated. Because of the interchangeable spelling, Enochs/Enix/Eneix, it has also been suggested by others, he is the same man who fathered Mary Ann and Joseph. Although we have found much evidence to link Brice and Leah as siblings and Mary Ann and Joseph as siblings, there hasn’t been one thread of data located that links all four together! It cannot, however, be completely discounted. One possible scenario might be that John was married twice. The 1790 census of Washington Co., PA shows a John Enoch Sr. with 2 sons under 16 (b 1775-90) and a female in household. Was the female a daughter? No way to determine from this census. In order to formulate a possibility ...let’s assume it was a daughter. And also in Wash. Co. (actual location to John’s residence unknown) was Catherine Enoch with 1 daughter under 16 (b 1775-90). Perhaps that daughter was Mary Ann. Without knowing where Joseph might be...it COULD be possible he was the second son in John’s household with Brice and Sarah. If this is so, why wasn’t Joseph mentioned in the Bissett booklet as a brother to Sarah? Could it be that John had been a widower when he married Catherine abt. 1781 and by 1790 they were separated? Perhaps John took Joseph into his household to make things easier for his, now, ex-wife?? We need more details before assuming this hypothetical story is actually true! For instance,in the 1790 census for Westmoreland Co., Wheatfield Twp., PA there was a John Enes with son under 16 and 1 female in his household. Does he figure into this? And in the 1800 census Fayette Co., Springfield Twp., there was a Joseph Enochs under the age of 25 yrs with a second male of the same age group. They were joined by 1 female under 10, 2 females 10 thru 15 and 1 female 16 thru 25. Who were they? This past year, it came to light there was a James Eneix living in Wisconsin in the 1830s....the same period of time Col. Joseph Eneix was residing at Mineral Point as the appointed Receiver of Public Money. Is James a close relative of Joseph? If so, he might have to be figured into the 1790 census equation! If James is discovered to be a brother to Joseph and Mary Ann, our hypothetical story must be revised. It would be more likely Joseph and James were the sons in John’s 1790 hhld...Fayette Co. and perhaps the female..his 2nd wife. Catherine would remain as the mother of Joseph and Mary Ann (and perhaps James) with Mary still showing in their mother’s household. Brice and Sarah’s father would not be so clear...except what about John Enes, of Westmoreland Co.? This John MAY be the father or brother of George Enes and John Enes/Inis who were members of Maple Creek Baptist Church Enon in 1791-96. This church was located on the west side of Monongahela Rvr. across from Belle Vernon. Belle Vernon is near the Westmoreland-Fayette County line. John (church member) born ca. early 1770s, married 1791 to Margaret Rees, d/o John. George was excluded from the church more than once for drinking of spirits (church records). Nothing more is known of him. Perhaps John Enoch, father of Brice and Sarah was the same man who received depreciation pay at Fort Pitt (Pittsburg) just before the Revolutionary War started in 1774. Where did this John come from? And was he the one included in the 1790 census for Fayette Co. or perhaps Westmoreland Co., PA? These are all questions myself and fellow collaborators are continuing to ponder in our attempts to find answers in the coming year...or years. Children of John Enochs/Enix: 1. Sarah *2. Brice Sr’s. father comes to us via the Bisset Family Reunion booklet published in 1925 by M. W. Bissett. M. W. Bissett was the Gt Grandson of Sarah Enix-Bissett, sister to Brice Sr. Brice served in the War of 1812 in Capt John Bonnett’s Co. from Ohio County VA. Listed on muster roll as In Service at Norfolk- 1814---name Bruce Enoch. Have two military jackets, name Brice Enochs, but papers not available. No pension or bounty- land file can be located. Court records indicate Brice served as a juror in Greene County PA sometime after 1810 census and before he enlisted in the war for Ohio County VA/WV. Although he is listed in an index of jurors, the whereabouts of actual trial documents are not known at this time (contrary to published sources on the index which say they are being held by the Greene County Museum). Brice and Leah lived with youngest son, Harrison, and his family in 1850 census. About early 1856, Harrison and family removed to Kendall County, Illinois(selling his interest in Marshall Co. land on Wayman’s Ridge in October 1855). Brice died in April 1857. Leah’s death has not been definitely been found. Considering possibility that she may have gone to Illinois with Harrison and family, as hinted by descendant of Harrison....Doris May Eneix-Redies, age 86 in 1999.
