MARSHALL COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY TIDBITS GEORGE ROGERS CLARK explored the Ohio and Great Kanawha Rivers in 1772. He spent the winter in this area, planted and harvested a crop and did much surveying. Riflemen from this region aided him in winning the Northwest in 1778-79. MARSHALL COUNTY, named for Chief Justice John Marshall, was formed from Ohio County in 1935. MASON-DIXON LINE became famous as the line between free and slave states before the War Between the States. The Survey establishing the Maryland-Pennsylvania boundary began in 1763; was baited by Indian wars near Morgantown in 1767 and continued to the southwest corner of Pennsylvania (the southeast corner of Marshall County) in 1782. An extension of the line forms the boundary between Marshall and Wetzel Counties CAPTAIN JAMES HARROD assembled 31 men at the mouth of Grave Creek in 1774 and from there went to Kentucky. Their settlement at Harrodsburg was halted while they joined Captain Christian's Company in Dunmore's War. FORMAN MASSACRE occurred in the "Narrows" on September 27, 1777 when Captain William Forman (Foreman) and his Hampshire County troops were ambushed by Indians. These men had joined the garrison of Fort Henry in protecting settlements on the Ohio River against Indians. GRAVE CREEK MOUND was discovered by Joseph Tomlinson in 1770. It is the highest conical burial mound in the United States. It now belongs to the State of West Virginia and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. WEST VIRGINIA PENIENTIARY was built in 1866. The fortress-like maximum security prison once held nearly 2,000 prisoners. The last execution was in 1959. It was vacated in 1995. REYNOLDS MEMORIAL HOSPITAL is located within Glen Dale. It was founded by Archdeacon B. M. Spurr in the late 1800's as God's Providence home. A new hospital building was completed in 1963. GRAND VUE PARK is a year-round regional recreation complex overlooking the Ohio River Valley, operated by the Marshall County Park ans Recreation Board. It was dedicated in 1974. CAMERON, WV was laid out by Daniel McConaughey about 1855 and named for Samuel Cameron, a B. & 0. railroad official. This unique triangular building was built at the turn of the 19th century. The Mail Pouch ads are credited with being the first outdoor advertising. OHIO RIVER FERRY represents ferries operated from Benwood to Bellaire, Ohio, Moundsville to Dilles Bottom, Ohio and in the area of Powhatan Point, Ohio. In 1984 a bridge at Moundsville replaced the last remaining ferry. - LOCK AND DAM #13 at McMechen operated for over sixty years, until it was replaced by a new system of Ohio River dams. Two lockmaster's houses are still standing at the site. HOME OF THE ECHO - The weekly newspaper was established in 1891 by J. D. Shaw. It became a daily paper on March 17, 1896. His son Craig Shaw was publisher from 1917 to 1957, followed by his grandson Sam Shaw for whom the bicycle appears as a memorial. COURT HOUSE - The Marshall County Court was organized in 1835 in a school building in Elizabethtown at what is now the corner of First Street and Baker Avenue, Moundsville. The first courthouse at the present site on Seventh Street was used from 1836 to 1875, when the present building was constructed. It was completely renovated and enlarged in 1974. A Civil War monument stands at the corner of the Courthouse lawn flanked by two restored Civil War cannons. At the side of the building there is a fountain and monument dedicated to the memory of all war veterans. ROSBBY'S ROCK (ROSBY) was the site on Christmas Eve 1852 when the B.& 0. Railroad track was closed joining Baltimore, Maryland and Wheeling, (W) Virginia with the first continuous railroad from the Atlantic Ocean to the Ohio River. THE BARN on Eastern Fourth Street is on the former Maxwell Sunnyside Dairy Farm. It is now the Marshall County Activities Development Authority, Inc. B. & 0. DEPOT, a splendid example of railroad architecture was built in the late 1800's. The passenger train made its final run from Wheeling back to Grafton in 1957. The B. & 0. Depot at Moundsville was razed in 1983. KIRKSIDE, A "house beside a church" was used for many years as a youth center. The Moundsville Landmarks Commission leased it in 1995 from the owners, Simpson United Methodist Church. It is on the National Register as the Ferrell-Holt House.
