VERSES FROM THE HILLS
by
Flora Downey Parriott - Published by her son, Joseph D. Parriott.

Verses from the Hills provides a window into the austere life of rural America in the first half of the twentieth century. Flora Downey Parriott (1897-1988) spent most of her life amidst the rounded ridges, narrow valleys, and steep hillsides of Marshall County, West Virginia. - While Flora started writing poems as a grade school student, most of this collection was composed after she was 65 years old. Her observations, philosophies, and life experiences are depicted in these verses, reflecting the abundance of joy and humor that can be found within modest means and hard work. No matter where you come from, you can find a part of yourself in Flora's memories of friends, family, faith and fun.

Price - $15. A portion of the proceeds to benefit the Strand Theatre restoration. Available at Neubauer's Florist, Moundsville and other locations.

For additional information write to Joseph D. Parriott, P. O. Box 277, Moundsville, West Virginia 26041.

This wonderful little book was published by Mae (Anderson) Crow. Mae married Halcie's nephew, Donald E. Crow (s/o Elmer), and they were very close to Halcie.

Moundsville, WV 26041-9709

Halcie's words paint a picture of what it was like to grow up on Fish Creek. It is wonderfully nostalgic, with an abundance of information about how life was in those days - like getting teeth pulled at Bill Richmond's store!! She tells how they did things in their daily lives, such as canning, baking, making molasses, shoeing horses, etc. - - Then she tells about the families in the area. Her wonderful stories about the people can't be found in court records or on the Internet. Especially for descendants and relatives of the families, these stories are a treasure!

DAKAN Family Book

Dorothy DAKAN Sedosky, of Moundsville & Roseby's Rock, WV, has published a book about the DAKAN Family.

Titled, "Descendants of Simon & Elizabeth Martin Dakan," the book contains 472 pages, with an additional 83 pages in a section about Roseby's Rock, the village where Dorothy was born and raised, and where she still maintains the family homeplace.

The book is not the kind of genealogy book we often see today, that is nothing but names and dates. Rather, it reads more like a story, with an abundance of pictures and documents telling much of it.

Someone told Dorothy she should call the book, "Dorothy's Scrapbook." And it is very much like a scrapbook, with all the items carefully labeled and described.

The DAKAN book was quite obviously a labor of love for Dorothy and will be a wonderful resource for researchers of this family.

With a hard cover, the book is $63; $51 for soft cover. This price includes shipping.

Send payment to Dorothy Dakan Sedosky, 240 Curtis Avenue, Moundsville, WV 26041.
