Descendants of John Rodefer (1774-1859) Submitted by Barbara Blake Goddard April 19, 2001. I started researching my ancestors only two years ago, which makes me a relative newcomer to the genealogy community. I've hesitated to submit family tree information to this site because I was afraid that my research wasn't up to the standards set by the others who have submitted family files they have researched for many more years. I finally decided to do so because I've come to some of the famous "brick walls" we all find in our research and am looking for assistance! Please do not take my information as "gospel" – it is only a "Work In Progress". I contains a lot of proven facts, but also some assumptions ands "leaps of faith". If you find any errors or additions which might help me in my search, please let me know and I'll make the corrections as soon as possible. I need your help!! I owe a big "Thank You" to Elizabeth Swiger for the information she shared with me on the Rodefer and Blake families. She got me headed in the right direction. FIRST GENERATION 1. He afterwards sold his place on Wheeling Creek and moved to Ohio, purchasing the land where Bellaire now stands, where he died at the age of 87 and his wife at the age of 86." (2) Per Elizabeth Swiger: "John and Philip Rodefer arrived in the Sand Hill area about 1796 and married sisters. We don't know where they came from, but John's daughter told the census taker that her father was born in Germany. Over the years he purchased a lot of land on both sides of the Ohio River, in what is now Marshall County and in Belmont County, OH. These lands were left to his children in his will. The Rodefers owned land in a loop of Wheeling Creek, about half-way between the Bonnett and Wetzel holdings. John had bought this farm in 1812 from David and Martin Huffman of Washington County, PA, who had inherited it from their father. John was listed as a resident of Ohio County at the time of this sale. He built a large cut-stone house that was in use for over 100 years and was still standing in the 1930s. He could write well and kept account books for himself and others. The Rodefers lived on Wheeling Creek until after 1830, and it is likely that their six children were born there. In 1833 they moved to Belmont County, OH, where John died."
