Carney began clerking in a store which the fim to which he belongs now conducts business. He clerked for five years, and in 1887, bought a third interet. The firm deals in general merchandise, grain and produce of all kinds. They do an increasing business, the sales for the past year having been much larger than ever before. September 9, 1888, Mr. Carney was married to Mis Jessie L., daughter of M. L. and Clara C. Hill, of the county. THey have only one child, Iona G. The parents are members of the Methodist Episcopal church, in which Mr. Carney holds the position of trustee. He is likewise a member of the I. O. O. F., and affiliates with the Masonic brethren. For four years Mr. S. P. Carney has owned a half interest in the MARSHALL & WETZEL COUNTY NEWS, published at Cameron. Mrs. Carney is a graduate of the West Liberty State normal school, class of 1882, and before her marriage became a teacher of distinction. She is a lady of fine culture, a good musician and makes a companion of whom any man might feel proud. S. A. Carney, brother of the gentleman above described and member of the same firm, also a partner in the Chaney & Carney mill at Littleton, was born August 26, 1858. When seventeen years old he began teaching, which he continued for four years, meeting with decided success in this calling. He liked the business, but it was not sufficiently pro- fitable to suit him, and he concluded to enter the mercantile business. He was married in 1880, to Miss Sarah E., daughter of Peter and Elizabeth (Haught) Glover. Three bright children blessed this union, viz: Samuel C., Florence A. and Herbert L. Mr. Carney is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and is superintendent of the Sunday school of the same, while his wife belongs to the Baptist denomination. The two Carney brothers above sketched belong to that class called "nature's noblemen," as they believe in the live and let live principle. They are courteous to all comers and especially kind to strangers "within their gates." They are first class business men, possessed of good judgment and address, and the success they have gained is due to their own personal efforts for which they are deserving of esteem.
