According to 'Thirty Thousand Immigrants' as quoted by Alan Peters. Johannes Yeater was born on 1 Apr 1724 in Stuttgart, Neckarkreis, Wuerttemberg, Germany. He immigrated on 9 Oct 1747 on the ship "Restoration." He was among the multitude of Germans who came early to Pennsylvania. Johannes (or "John") Yeater was married to Margaretha Korst on 2 Aug 1748 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Margaretha Korst was born about 1728. It is not yet known whether she was born in Germany or Pennsylvania. Johannes Yeater died in June 1805 in Derry Township, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. DAR National #439544 1820 Center Twp, Greene Co, PA Yater, Andrew 1---1-2-2---1-- Andrew was born about 1760, perhaps in Philadelphia or possibly in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He may have been named after or related to an older Andrew 'Yetter' who was in Philadelphia at least as early as 1771 and may have been a brother of Johannes Yeater. Andrew Yeater was a young soldier in the Revolutionary War. Sometime after the war, he married a woman named Catherine. He appears in the 1790 federal census as a head of household, living in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. From the make-up of the household, he likely had a wife, one young son, and two young daughters at the time. Mifflin County had been created out of Cumberland and Northumberland counties the year before, in 1789. By 1810, Andrew Yeater had moved westward to Greene County in the southwestern corner of Pennsylvania, where we find him in the 1810 census with a large family of twelve children. The household was comprised of the parents, who were over 45, and a family of 4 males under 10, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 16- 26, 1 female 10-16, and 4 females 16-26. An attempt has been made to reconstitute the Andrew Yeater family, but be advised that many of the relationships are based on circumstantial rather than solid evidence. Revolutionary War Service, 1776-1781 Andrew Yeater served in the 1st Maryland Regiment during the Revolutionary War and as a private in the 10th Pennsylvania Regiment. Was this the same man, or were there two Revolutionary War soldiers named Andrew Yeater? The Maryland compiled military service record contains the muster or payroll dates: 1 Dec 1776; 3 Jan – 3 Feb 1777; June, July, Aug 1780; June 1778; 10 Sep 1778; 1 Oct 1778; May 1780; and 1 Jan 1781. According to Sarah Jeannette Ellis Yeater, p. 25, Andrew Yeater was a "Private, 10th Penn. Regt. in 1780." In the 1st Maryland Regiment, Andrew Yeater’s name appears on an account: "The Province of Maryland To Capt Samuel Smith Dr For Boarding the following Soldiers Andrew Yeater from the 13 Jay till 11 Mar (1776) 8w 2 days, at 7/6." Also in the records of the 1st Maryland Regiment, Andrew Yeater’s name appears on an account of "Wages Due the following Officers and Soldiers of the Eighth Company 3rd Apl 1776." In the 10th Pennsylvania Regiment, Andrew Yeater is listed as a private "Musd June 78" and was paid L54-6-5. He was listed as a private on the roll of "Colonel Richard Hampton’s Company of the 10th Pennsylvania Regiment of Foot, Inlisted during the Rev. War," roll dated 10 Sep 1778, with remarks: "In the field." Andrew Yeater, 10th Regt., 1780, appears in a book, note for payment due him, cert. no. 67908, letter R, sum 33 dollars 30 90ths. Andrew ‘Yetter,’ Private, 10th, Pa., appears in an account book, sum received 50 dollars, "Andw Yetters mark" (mark looks like an "N" and "Y" mixed together). There are numerous other references to Andrew Yeater in the Revolutionary War in the published Pennsylvania Archives series. 1790 Census, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania After the War, Andrew Yeater was enumerated in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, in the first federal census made in 1790. In the household were: one male under 16, one male over 16, and 3 females. 1810 Census, Greene County, Pennsylvania By 1810, Andrew Yeater had migrated westward to the southwest corner county of Pennsylvania – Greene County. Enumerated in his household that year under the name Andrew ‘Yater’ were: 4 males under 10, 1 male 16-26, 2 males 10-16, 1 male over 45; 1 female 10-16; 4 females 16-26; and 1 female over 45. I am beginning to think that the Margaret Yeater, who was living with Robert Gilbert, in the 1850 census, was the step-mother of Reason Yeater and the two children, Mary & Christopher were half-sister and brother to Reason. Yeater Dies of Heart Attack at Kausooth Home Nathaniel Walker Yeater, 78, prominent retired Marshall county farmer, died suddenly Monday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lawrence Quigley with whom he made his home. He was found dead in the yard apparently the victim of a heart attack. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Quigley, with whom he made his home, Mrs. Clarice Lowe, of Milton, Ohio; three sons, Reason, of Huntington, Wiley of Jefferson avenue, Moundsville and Clem of Littleton, and two brothers, C. E. Yeater of Cameron and Oscar Yeater of Glen Easton. He was a member of the Methodist church. Funeral services will be held at the place of death Wednesday moring at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. The home of Glenn and Doris Stern was originally built for Adaline Store owner and farmer Christopher Yeater. Yeater owned and operated the Adaline Store and built his home about 50 feet from his business. Evidence of his line of work can be found on the window sills and the staircase. Visible are stains from ink bottles where Yeater worked on store bills with a quill pen. Yeater's son operated a dentist office in the parlor. The plans and materials for the house were in a kit purchased from Sears and delivered by rail to a nearby community and then taken to the building site by horse and wagon. The kits included all the basics for building the house: lumber, plaster, roofing, shingles, windows and fixtures. The company charged extra for heating, wiring, plumbing. The kit included a 76 page instruction manual for those brave souls who at least wanted to start the job themselves. Every piece already had been cut and numbered for easy installation. Stern said the house cost $8,000 to complete, including the kit and labor costs. The head carpenter made $2 a day, Stern said, and it was more than an eight-hour day. General laborers earned 50 cents for a day of hard work. When it was built, the house was surrounded by oil fields and shanty towns. Right down around the turn, there were little shacks where people lived during the oil boom. This (Adaline) is where their head offices were. The Sterns rented the house in 1942 and eventually purchased the home and its 340 acres, now known as Stern's Lost Valley Stock Farm. We bought the house in 1947, said Mrs Stern. We've done some remodeling since then. Upon having the house wired for electricity in 1947, the Sterns removed the glass chandeliers which used gas to light the house. They also lowered the ceilings when their forced-air furnace was installed to keep in the heat. All 13 rooms in the house have tongue and groove oak floors, made with timber from the farm. The house also has solid oak doors with raised panels. A hutch, crafted from golden oak, was included in the house plans. The Sterns moved it from the dining room to an upstairs bedroom. He was a former employee of the State Road Commission and later operated a service station in Moundsville. He was a member of Simpson Methodist church. He was a Democrat and had been active in party affairs in earlier years. Mine was blue and very beat up and battered as I wore it all the time. Alton offered to buy me a brand new gray hat if I would throw away that Yankee one. I refused his offer as I would never wear a Rebel hat. Alton also named a son, Robert Lee Yeater. I believe all the stories about the Yohos being southern symphathyzers to be true. You will not find more than one or two of the Marshall County Yohos who were in the Civil War, in the Union Army. When my mother was a little girl, her mother would dress her up in the cutest little outfits, and then her Dad would take her for a walk on the town. He would stop to talk to everyone and show off his little daughter. Alton had an extensive library of books. He was very interested in all the wars and the great generals. I borrowed as many of those books as I could read as I was also interested in the American Revolution, Civil War, and WWII. Alton's son, Jeff, now has most of those books. Alton was also very interested in the family history. On numerous occasions my mother has told me how happy he would be that I am working on the family history. Alton was very proud of his ancestors. Bessie had many of her nieces and nephews in her classroom at Central Elementary School, in Moundsville, WV, including my mother and Jeff. The Times Herald, Friday, November 26, 1993, Philadelphia, PA By J F Pirro As a running back for West Virginia, Tom Yeater gave the Mountaineers everything he had, and more. And now Yeater, a 50 year-old Blue Bell resident, is getting something back. The one constant enjoyment in Yeater's life - a life marred by pain and anguish - has been the Mountaineers' football program. And when West Virginia takes on Boston College today, Yeater will be in front of his television set cheering on his alma mater. Not much keeps Yeater from following his West Virginia team. Two weeks ago, when West Virginia crushed Temple, Yeater endured perhaps the last of his pain. Complications from his diabetes necessitated the amputation of his left leg three inches below his knee. And while he recuperated at Abington Hospital, Yeater did what comes naturally to him. "I listened to the game on the radio," he said. "I've suffered so much pain in the last two years," said Yeater. "I'm just glad there's no more pain, and if I can get back to a normal life, it will have all been well worth it." What will help him recuperate even faster begins today when West Virginia plays Boston College. It's an interesting scenario since BC is coming off a huge upset over Notre Dame. By the same token, West Virginia is on the heels of its stunning victory over Miami. If West Virginia beats Boston College, and Florida somehow beats Florida State tomorrow, then Yeater said he thinks the fifth-ranked Mountaineers will play Nebraska in the Orange Bowl for the national title. "It's a big game (today)," he said, explaining that he'll be watching it on television at home. "I hope we pull this one out like the last one (against Miami)." The last time West Virginia was in a position to win a national championship was 1989 when the Mountaineers lost to Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. "They've given me a lot of enjoyment, win or lose," Yeater said. "I'll feel good about the team either way. If they win it, it will be beyond belief. It would be too much to ask for, but I think it will work out that way. I feel good about the team, and about my ability to get on my feet and be able to go." Growing up in Moundsville, near Wheeling, WV, he attended West Virginia on a football scholarship. Out of a Split-T offensive set, he was one of the two Mountaineers' starting halfbacks between 1962-64. He may be the best back the school ever had, according to Tom Woodeshick, a 1963 West Virginia graduate who went on to play 10 NFL seasons, nine with the Eagles. "He was the most touted back ever to come there," said Woodeshick, who now works in casino marketing. "It's not even close. I don't know what he possessed. He wasn't a burner. He wasn't that allusive, but no one worked harder or had a better work ethic." In 1965, Yeater was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys. He reported to training camp, but soon ripped all the cartilege in his left knee. That ended his football career. "That crushed me," he said. "All I ever wanted to do was play professional football, and when that happened, I thought it was the end of everything. I spent months after that deciding what I even wanted to do." He sat out a year, then went back to the university to finish his degree. And now, he knows exactly what he wants to do by the end of this calendar year. He intends to rehabilitate himself well enough to attend West Virginia's bowl game. "That would be great," he said. "That's what I'm shooting for. It gives me something to look forward to. I have a lot of pride in West Virginia and its football team. "There's a lot of joy and satisfaction in following and supporting them. It gives me something very positive to take my mind off my personal problems." Woodeshick, who has been in better contact with Yeater this past year than in any other, always knew him to be an optimistic fighter. "It's the athletic mentality, particularly among football players," he explained. "God bless him. I hope he continues that way. He must be a very strong-willed guy." A 1967 West Virginia graduate, Yeater works with the FMC Corp., a diversified industrial company. He's the organization's director of occupational safety and hygiene. Of Course, the irony of a health official inflicted with health problems is painfully obvious. "This has given me a greater appreciation for what I do," he said. "My job is the prevention of this kind of thing, and now it's happened to me. I have a feeling now for the hardship and the effect something like this can have on someone's life." Now, he's worried his own job will be hampered. Since he travels to various industrial plants all over the world, he wonders if he'll have as much mobility. "The people (doctors and friends) have been very encouraging," he said. When he was at West Virginia, the Mountaineers did nearly as well as this year's undefeated team. In 1962, the year he took a starting job away form senior Jim "Shorty" Moss, the team finished 8-2. A year later, West Virginia went 7-3, and in 1964, it finished 8-2 and went to the Liberty Bowl, only to lose 7-0 to Utah. In 1962, one of his most cherished memories is having scored the winning touchdown in a key game against rival Pitt. Ironically, perhaps, it was just about a month ago that Yeater was back at West Virginia for the annual Pitt game on an invitation from his life-long friend, ED Pastilong, the Mountaineers' athletic director. The visit turned into a small reunion as Pastilong also invited Woodeshick, Yeater's backfield mate when he first broke into West Virginia's starting lineup as a sophomore. Woodeshick was a senior that year. "It was almost like I held it against him because he had beaten out my buddy (Moss) who I shared the backfield with," Woodeshick said. "We were simply teammates on the field." The two recalled the 1962 game they shared against Pitt. Trailing 8-7 with a couple of minutes left, Woodeshick ran 92 yards for a touchdown, but he was called out of bounds at Pitt's 40. Then, it was Yeater's turn. "On the next five or six plays, he was unbelievable," Woodeshick recalled. "He was banging out runs of five, seven and 10 yards. I never saw a guy run as hard. You talk about determination. No guy was ever more determined. "We both excelled that game, but he did more than I because he took the ball over the goal line. I did too, but it didn't count." In Yeater's career, he also had a 92-yard touchdown run - one that counted. It came against Oregon State. Years later, his uphill battle against diabetes began. In 1981, he was first diagnosed, and each year the disease has become progressively worse. He's had several recent minor surgeries for painful vascular problems, then it culminated with the amputation. "I knew I had problems, but I didn't realize it would end this way, " Yeater said. "I saw the doctor, and it was four or five days later, and I was having the surgery." He's been at home for a 10-day recovery period, and after an appointment next week, he'll be cast for an artifical leg, and then undergo a two to four week inpatient stay at Abington to learn how to walk again. If West Virginia can win today, it might just be the foothold Yeater needs. "It'd be a big lift for me," he said. "It'd be a real source of joy because I'm a big fan." With a big heart. She not married to Robert Whitehill Jr. Robert Whitehill Jr1 was born on September 13, 1768. He died on August 29, 1829 in Waynesburg, Greene Co, PA. This couple never married Waynesburg Attorney. Had a will and requested James M Whitehill to petition Greene County Orphans Court to have apporinted a guardian for Elizabeth, daughter of Catharine Yeater. Robert Whitehill, Jr was buried in Monument Park, Waynesburg, PA. He studied law with his father and uncle, John Whitehill, Esq. of Lancaster, PA. Also studied law under the preceptership of Edmund Randolph at Philadelphia, PA. Robert Whitehill was a well educated and cultured man. he visited at Monticello with Thomas Jefferson many times. He was groomsman at the wedding of two of the daughters of Thomas Jefferson. He enjoyed the friendship of many distinguished people and he was the traveling companion of General Lafayette during his tour of the United States. (Note: Edmund Randolph was the first Attorney General under President George Washington and was appointed in the year 1789. Robert Whitehill owned many properties at Waynesburg, PA and was active in building the first courthouse and late he purchased this property on Green St. He owned large tracts of land near new Albany, IN and also at Hamilton, OH. He was married to Zora Headley (daughter of Joseph Keener Headley and Mary Jane Dulaney) on September 7, 1901 in Greene Co, PA. Zora Headley was born on November 22, 1877.
