Henry Yoho was born on 25 JUL 1781 in Greene Twp, Washington Co, PA. Calculated from tombstone, date of death is 5 DEC 1862, 81 yr, 4 mo, 10 ds. Place of birth assumed from the fact his father was living in Greene Twp, Washington Co, PA in 1784 and also was in the Washington Co, PA Malitia in 1780. I don't believe there were many settlers living in WV during the year of Henry's birth because of Indian troubles. The "History of the Panhandle", 1879, states that Peter Yoho came to the Fish Creek area of West Virginia in 1792. Therefore it is my conclusion that Henry was born in Greene Twp, Washington Co, PA. He died on 5 DEC 1862 in nr Graysville, Marshall Co, VA. He was buried in Peter Yoho Cem, Fish Ck, Marshall Co, WV. He has reference number 208. Lived Fish Creek, nr Graysville, Marshall Co, WV. By this time he owned his father's farm and should have been in Marshall County. The 170 acres of land was bought by his son, Henry Yoho, Jr., from the other 10 heirs (brothers and sisters) in two transactions. The first purchase took place on March 24, 1828, Ohio Co. Deed Book 14, pp 202-206 when he purchased 9 shares. The 10th share was purchased from the heirs of Margaret (Yoho) Archer of Clay Co. IN on Sept. 29, 1834, Ohio Co., Deed Book 19, pp 379- 380. Peter Yoho had 11 children, so the 11th share went to Henry Yoho, Jr. as his inheritance right. (Furnished by Denver C. Yoho) . . According to Finnicum and Briggs, there is a record at the Marshall County Courthouse which says his age at death was, 81 years, 4 months, 10 days. . The cemetery where Henry Yoho is buried, located just above Graysville, WV is sometimes called the Fish Creek Cemetery and sometimes the Yoho Cemetery. . Denver Yoho writes: This person was called Henry Yoho Jr. to distinguish him from his uncle who was called, Henry Sr. He was married to Annabelle Buchanan (daughter of William Buchanan and Mary McMullen) about 1805. Annabelle Buchanan was born on 23 NOV 1780 in Allegheny Co, PA. Tombstone has date of death, 31 JAN 1873, 92 yr, 2 mo, 8 ds. Birth calculated from the date of death and her age. Anna Belle consistently said she was born in PA in the census but I believe her father never lived in PA. Unless they were also there during an Indian uprising. She died on 31 JAN 1873 in Fish Ck, Marshall Co, WV. She was buried in Peter Yoho Cem, Fish Ck, Marshall Co, WV. She has reference number 209. According to Hardesty's History, the mother of Seth J Parsons is still residing in Marshall Co. Her mother died in this county 3 JAN 1863 at the age of 87 years, having been an active member of the Methodist Church for seventy years. pg 1889 TCR. #16 Franklin Dist Marshall Co 1870 Yoho, Annabel 84 PA living with son Peter Some researchers have listed Annabelle's place of birth as Ohio/Marshall Co, VA/WV. The census records consistently list her birthplace as PA. I do not think Annabelle's father ever lived in PA. He owned several pieces of land in Monongalia & Ohio Co, WV. It is possible he was in PA during some of the Indian troubles. It is also possible because of the border dispute between PA & VA, that Annabelle was really born in VA but thought she was born in PA. Without any further evidence I have to list her birthplace as PA. Annabelle's tombstone list her name as Anna B wife of Henry Yoho, died 31 JAN 1873, age 92 yr 2 mo 8 ds. George Yoho was born on 21 DEC 1806 in Fish Ck, Ohio Co, VA. He died on 17 AUG 1890 in Marshall Co, WV. He was buried in Antioch Cem, Proctor Dist, Wetzel Co, WV. He has reference number 104. Farmer, lived near Lynn Camp, Marshall Co, WV. I don't believe George Yoho ever lived near Lynn Camp. In 1996 I visited Sullivan Yoho and he drove me to a point in a field behind his house on Rines Ridge. We could see George's land from that point. Sullivan owned the land until recently. Recollections by Denver Yoho A second raid was made on the Jeremiah Yoho place, led again by a former employee. George Yoho, Jeremiah's father, was lying on the porch taking a nap when they arrived. The soldiers ran a bayonet up the old man's belly, cutting off buttons, but not doing other damage. They took what they wanted and left. A few years later, when the war was over, George was driving a wagon pulled by oxen on the streets of Gallipolis, Ohio. The mud in the street was so bad that a pedestrian had trouble keeping his boots on and had very little control of his movements as he crossed the street. The man who had used the bayonet walked directly in front of George's oxen and within reach of his bullwhip. My grandfather, Charlie Yoho, said, "Grandpap George whipped the clothes off him and said, "Now goddamn you there ain't no Civil War going on"." A grandson of the whipped man lived in the same neighborhood as my grandfather in Cabell County, WV, and my grandfather would repeat this story to me every time we saw the man. William and Mary Yoho lived on a side ridge of Rines Ridge and George Yoho, Mary's brother, lived on a side ridge of Burch Ridge. The houses were in sight of each other, across a hollow. Charles Yoho, grandson of George Yoho, and Elizabeth Emily (known as Em), courted against the will of the families, who disapproved because of the close relationship. Charles would visit, but he was not allowed to talk to Em, but had to talk to her father. His best pants had a patch on each knee. He would cross his legs to hide one patch and hang his cap over the other knee to hide the patch on that leg. They were finally married on their third attempt to elope. (Source: Story told many times by Charles Yoho to his grandson, Denver Clayton Yoho) Deed from John Floyd, Esquire, Governor of Virginia to George Yoho, Jr 1 AUG 1830 Sixty three acres, situate Ohio County on the waters of Whetstone run and bounded as followeth, to wit: Beginning at a hickory and beech, corner to Archibald Woods on the top of Brushy ridge(this isn't the Brushy Ridge off Burch Ridge), thence with said Woods line W40 poles to a poplar; thence S51 E44 poles to two Maples on a point; thence N30 W30 poles to a Black oak on a point, thence S59 W72 poles to a hickory on a point; thence S39 W47 poles to a white walnut in said Woods line; and thence with the same S25 E28 poles to the beginning. This was the original sheepskin deed, now in the possession of Sullivan Blair Yoho(given to Robert Coffield). Sullivan drove his pickup up a point above his house and pointed out where the land was. It was east of Sullivan's house, behind the house. I am not sure where the idea came from that George Yoho lived near Lynn Camp, but he was in Franklin District for every census living on his 63 acres of land. Sullivan owned the 63 acres plus additional acreage purchased by Henry Yoho, son of George. At one time the piece contained 355 acres. Sullivan sold the land in 1972. There now, 1996, is a sign on the lane leading to the land, labeled Yoho lane, on Rines Ridge. (TVA) The above land was acquired as follows: 63 acres by George Yoho in 1830. Henry Yoho & Susan Elizabeth Kelley acquired the original 63 acres and purchased additional acres, making the total 279 acres. John Yoho, s/o Henry & Susan, & Kate Franklin had the land for some time, but never really owned the land. The land was then inherited by Blair, Floyd, & Georgie Yoho as the heirs of Kate Franklin Yoho. Blair Yoho purchased the shares of his siblings, Floyd & Georgie Yoho. Blair Yoho purchased an additional 90 acres and he also sold 14 acres, making the total 355 acres. Sullivan Yoho inherited the land from his father, John Yoho. (Told to me by Sullivan Yoho in 1997. We found the tombstone for George Yoho face down and sunken in the ground. We spent quite a bit of time digging and working to be able to lift the stone. We didn't have any tools. When we were finally able to lift the stone, it was in excellent shape, in constrast to the stone for his wife, Rachel, which had been upright. I believe Rachel's stone was broken in half. He was a local minister of that faith and the instrument of great good to the people among whom he labored. He chose his own place of burial on his home farm and died in the triumphs of faith after a well spent life. Jehu Parsons (son of Henry P Parsons and Hannah Etta Gorby) was born on 17 MAY 1815 in Greene Co, PA. He died on 11 OCT 1881 in Wetzel Co, WV.6 He was buried in Pioneer Cem, Marshall Co, WV. History of Marshall Co 1984 states, Jeahue and Catherine are buried in the Pioneer Cemetery on Pioneer Hill on the Jeahue Parsons farm. Catherine being the first person buried there. Jehu Parsons bought 185 acres from Chloe Wykert 4 JUN 1849. Jehu Parsons bought interest in 120 acres from Henry and Annabelle Yoho 4 JUN 1849. Jehu Parsons 37 acres from I & R Hoge, Proctor Run 7 JAN 1851. Jehu Parsons 34 acres Proctor Creek, from John & Levinia Rine, 8 FEB 1855. Jehu Parsons 41 acres from I & R Hoge 27 AUG 1864. Will recorded in Wetzel County, WV at book 2, page 122. Biography: Jehu Parsons was born in Greene Co, PA on 17 MAY 1811, the son of Henry and Hannah Gorby Parsons. He migrated with his parents to Fish Creek, Ohio Co, VA, after selling their farm in 1831. He married Catherine yoho, born 13 FEB 1813, daughter of Henry Yoho, Jr and Anna Bell Buchanan of Fish Creek. He and his wife settled on Parsons Ridge, Proctor District on a 200 acre tract of land obtained from his father-in-law through a sheep skin received from the Governor of Virginia in 1832. F. W. Parsons said that the Parsons antecedents settled first on the Eastern Shore of Maryland then came west by working across the National Turnpike. Jehu and Catherine organized the first subscription school in that section which was taught following the Civil War by a Confederate soldier, named Speare, from the state of Georgia. It was taught in a room of a log house of Jehu Parsons. Some of the patrons subscribed one and a half pupils for this school or perhaps one-half meaning that they could attend school only half-time. The first free school was also a log building that stood on top of Pioneer hill on the land owned by Jehu around 110 years ago. It had a huge fireplace for which the patrons hauled wood, greased paper windows, backless planks for seats and a board fastened to the wall at one side for a writing desk. Ink used in the school was from berry juice. The building was surrounded by woods and trails were blazed for children and that was the way the name Pioneer originated. The second building was known as Pioneer also and was erected in 1887 and the third building in 1911, adjacent to Pioneer Cemetery. Jehu and Catherine built the first frame house in the community in 1869 and moved in the day before Christmas. It had five rooms, front hall and stairs, and beautiful cut stone basement. This house is still standing today. He was a very properous farmer and land owner at the time of his death on 25 OCT 1881. His wife preceded him in death, 24 JUL 1876, being the first person buried in Pioneer Cemetery. Catherine was a devout Christian and a member of the Antioch Church. Henry could not read or write. Henry Yoho had a hiding place under a fence post in his field. No one but he knew where it was and he hid his gold there whenever marauding bands of hoodlums were known to be in the area of his farm on Rine's Ridge. This story was told to me by Tom Yoho, son of Noel Yoho. Tom also has the family bible and a painting of Henry M Yoho. Moundsville Daily Echo, Thursday, March 18, 1915 Henry Yoho died at his home on Ryans Ridge at 12:30 o'clock Wednesday night after an illness of about two weeks. Mr Yoho was 83 years old November 23, 1914 and is survived by three sons, S. T. Yoho, T. A. Yoho, and W. W. Yoho all of Franklin District, and one daughter Mrs Austin Franklin of Woodlands. Mrs. Yoho has been dead for several years and Mr. Yoho lived at the old home place with his grandson Tom Yoho. The funeral will be held at 1 o'clock Friday morning. Interment at Yoho cemetery. Mr. Yoho was one of the oldest and best known citizens in the southern part of the county. (Furnished by T. Vernon Anderson) Recollections: Sullivan Yoho wrote: Henry M. Yoho could neither read nor write. But he had the ability to provide all of his sons a farm to live on. He died on 17 MAR 1915 and was buried in the Yoho Cemetery on Rines Ridge Road, Route 76. In fact, this Henry Yoho set up this burial place on his farm. When I die and am buried here I will be the 4th generation of my family buried in this place. My great-grandad, Henry, is in the 1st row. My grandad, John R. is in the 2nd row and my dad is in the 3rd row. I have my stone in the fourth and last row. None of the other relatives of Henry Yoho have 4 generations in this place. This has been a well ekpt grave site for about 100 years. The Yoho family has held the farm in their family all this time. However, Ruth (Yoho) Cozart passed away at the farm during the winter of 1994. The farm is now for sale as Ruth had no children. She left the farm to neices and nephews that live far away. They have never lived here and are not interested in keeping the land. I expect time will change the appearance of this grave yard. I have tried to set up some money to maintain the upkeep, but no one knows what tomorrow brings in this USA now! He was married to Susan Elizabeth Kelley (daughter of John Kelley and Eleanor Arnold) on 28 FEB 1856 in Moundsville, Marshall Co, VA.18 Married by Edward Dowler. Susan Elizabeth Kelley was born on 11 MAY 1835 in Hampshire Co, VA. She died on 16 JUN 1910 in Rines Rdg, Marshall Co, WV.17 Died of stomach Trouble. Yoho. wife of Henry Yoho, a prominent citizen of Marshall county, died June 16, at her home on Ryan's Ridge where she has resided for more than forty years. Although her sickness had extended over many months and her death had been expected at various times during the past year, yet with the news that she had finally passed away, a feeling of sadness filled the who community. Mrs. Yoho was born in Hampshire county, Virginia in 1835 and was mrrried in 1856. At the time of her death she had reached the age of a few days more than seventy five years. Soon after her marriage she accepted Christ as her Savior and ideal in life and united with the Christen church in which she has remained a faithful and loyal member. So thoroughly did the principles of life of the man of Gallilee dominate her actions that she was always sought by the needy who invariably carried away the sympathy of a loving heart, and as far as possible the help they needed. Her home was a refuge for the stranger and a center of association for children and friends, and the communities regard for her was manifested in the great number of anxious inquiries during her sickness and the hundreds of friends who came to apy their last respects. While her sickness was long and at times, her suffering intense, yet she was patient and trustful to the end. She is survived by her husband, one brother John R. Kelley of Meighen, and four children, S. T. Yoho of Howard, W. W. Yoho of Burch Ridge, T. A. Yoho and Mrs. A. L. Franklin of Ryans Ridge all of whom are well known throughout the county. The funeral services were held at the home Saturday morning June 18, conducted by Rev. J. F. Jameson, who spoke briefly from John 14:2 and assisted by Rev. Travis. He had $40 and she had a cow. The cabin, which no longer remains, was located between the present day Mobay and PPG Chemical Companies on St Rt 2. Timothy Yoho was a farmer and at one time owned a considerable portion of the bottom land along the Ohio River above New Martinsville, WV. With additional land on Burch Ridge, he owned approximately 1200 acres. He built another home with a barn in 1902. The house has since been torn down but the barn remains. One can still see his initials TY which he wrote in a different color of shingles on its roof. The barn is located on Rt 2 above New Martinsville. Reportedly he was very tight with his money. Someone once asked him why he didn't spend some of his money. He replied, "I don't enjoy spending money, I enjoy making it." When his home was torn down years ago, #25,000 was found hidden away. Timothy could not read or write, but could sell cattle at 3 1/2 cents a pound and figure it out in his head. Timothy's will is in the Marshall County Court House. He had signed it with an "X". If anyone wanted to talk with Timothy, they would have to follow him in the field where he worked. He had a rope tied at the foot of his bed so he could pull himself out of bed in the morning. His wife, Jane Kelley, smoked a corn cob pipe and had a corn cob on a stick to scratch her back. He only had four acres of open land so had to do something besides a farm to make a living. He ran a store and had the first stock scales in the community. Sarah ran the post office at Howard, which was in the store. She wroted letters for many people, that couldn't write. Joshua also couldn't write. The farm consisted of 3,000 acres, and after it was cleared it was one of the largest farms of that area. (Source: The Yoho & Morris Family History, by Verna B. Riggs, pg 73) Recollections: Joshua Yoho had scales to weight animals on his farm. I assume he weighed horses and animals for himself and charged other people a fee for weighing each animal. Joshua was a shrewd trader. He traded horses for profit and was able to best most men in a horse trade. When a person bested the other he bragged of it, but the man on the other end of the deal kept quiet. It is said that Joshua Yoho would go to a county fair in Pennsylvania, just over the state line, near Cameron, WV. He would trade horses several times during the day and receive "boot" on every trade and sometimes bring the same horse home with boot money of his trades in his pocket. (Written by Denver Yoho) Obituary: Joshua Yoho, my earthly father, is gone to try the reality of the unseen world to us. He was the son of George and Rachel Yoho, deceased. To this union was born nine children: Jerry, Henry, Timothy, James, Polly, Joshua, Cassie, Ann, and Elizabeth. All of them have gone over but three girls, Polly of New Martinsville, Ann of Cameron and Elizabeth of Woodland. The youngest of this family to die was James, who departed this life at the age of sixty or nearby. Father was born in Marshall County, and lived his entire life, but a short time, in the same place. He was 78 years, nine months, and two days old. He was married to Sarah C Monroe Feb 16, 1865. They were permitted to live together in this happy and prosperous life for more than fifty years. At the age of 91 years he took an active interest in life and until but a few weeks ago was making his usual rounds of visiting children and other friends in this state and Ohio. Keeping friends with old and young always seemed to be more to him than acquiring honors in public life or adding to his worldly goods. Correct living, industry and intelligence had enabled Mr. Parsons to spend his old age in any manner he chose without being hampered for finances and he lived by mingling among his friends. He never proffered advice but it was often sought. Neither did he push himself forward to hold office, yet for more than thirty years in his active years he was retained in the office of Justice of the Peace, a community accommodation, and there were but few cases that he could not get the parties to compose their differences without resorting to law. Probably Mr. Parsons was the last survivor in Marshall county who had been a member of the county court when that body was composed of the justice of the peace. When agitation for a bridge across the mouth of Fish creek began and the most feasible location for bridges of that day was Graysville, Mr. Parsons was instrumental in having the proper road connections built to that riffle before the matter went further. Previous to that bridge when Fish creek could not be forded the only way to get to the county seat from below the creek was by steamboat. Within the last twelve months three lifelong companions have died in that community. They were born in the same year in that neighborhood, George A. Smith, Robert Coffield and Jason Parsons, they spent their lives on farms that joined and died within a few months of each other. Two years ago George Parsons had a reunion of the Parsons relationship at his farm at Pioneer and Mr. Smith and Mr. Coffield as well as this father Mr. Parsons were present. Another interesting fact in the life of Jason Parsons was that he and his brother Israel and his cousin James, married three of the Connelly sisters, Sarah M., Mary A. and Sophia, and the three families resided in the same neighborhood. RECOLLECTIONS: My grandfather, Charles Yoho, told this story, one of the stories he took most pride of. His grandmother, Rachel Yoho, had a riding mare that she bred and she gave each of her sons a colt from the mare. She gave her son, Henry M "Speckled" Yoho, a colt that looked exactly like the old mare. She gave my grandfather, Charles, a yoke of calves when he was 14 years of age. A short time later Henry M "Speckled" Yoho bought the old mare and had two alike except one was old and the other young. Grandpa, Charles, traded his young yoke of oxen to his uncle, Henry M Yoho, for the old mare. It was several miles from Rine's Ridge where Henry and his father, George, lived to Greenfield Ridge where Joshu Yoho lived. Joshua didn't know that his mother, Rachel, had gotten rid of the old mare. Grandpa picked a very cold day to ride to Uncle Josh's. The reason he picked so cold a day for the trip to his uncles's was that Josh was middle- aged or past and wouldn't want to leave the warm house. He rode by Josh's window so Josh would see him, stabled his horse and went into the house with the same excuse for his trip on the cold day. He had sized up Josh's horse when he stabled his mare. After a short time Uncle Josh said, "Boy where did you get that horse?" Grandpa told him from his uncle Henry. As Grandpa expected uncle Josh hit him up for a trade thinking the old mare was the young one his brother Henry had gotten from his mother. A trade was arranged in which Grandpa received a young sorrell horse in exchange for the old mare. His biggest concern was that Josh would decide to go to the barn to inspect his new horse, so he left as soon as he could. My grandfather told this story often. It was quite an accomplishment for a boy to best a veteran horsetrader. Grandpa was born on 27 NOV 1856 and his grandmother, Rachel, died in SEP 1868. So she had given her sons the colts and for some reason the old mare wasn't disposed of until two years after her death. If she gave Grandpa the calves he would only have been 12 years old at the time and after two years the calves would be of workable age. RECOLLECTIONS: My grandfather, Charles Yoho, told this story, one of the stories he took most pride of. His grandmother, Rachel Yoho, had a riding mare that she bred and she gave each of her sons a colt from the mare. She gave her son, Henry M "Speckled" Yoho, a colt that looked exactly like the old mare. She gave my grandfather, Charles, a yoke of calves when he was 14 years of age. A short time later Henry M "Speckled" Yoho bought the old mare and had two alike except one was old and the other young. Grandpa, Charles, traded his young yoke of oxen to his uncle, Henry M Yoho, for the old mare. It was several miles from Rine's Ridge where Henry and his father, George, lived to Greenfield Ridge where Joshu Yoho lived. Joshua didn't know that his mother, Rachel, had gotten rid of the old mare. Grandpa picked a very cold day to ride to Uncle Josh's. The reason he picked so cold a day for the trip to his uncles's was that Josh was middle- aged or past and wouldn't want to leave the warm house. He rode by Josh's window so Josh would see him, stabled his horse and went into the house with the same excuse for his trip on the cold day. He had sized up Josh's horse when he stabled his mare. After a short time Uncle Josh said, "Boy where did you get that horse?" Grandpa told him from his uncle Henry. As Grandpa expected uncle Josh hit him up for a trade thinking the old mare was the young one his brother Henry had gotten from his mother. A trade was arranged in which Grandpa received a young sorrell horse in exchange for the old mare. His biggest concern was that Josh would decide to go to the barn to inspect his new horse, so he left as soon as he could. My grandfather told this story often. It was quite an accomplishment for a boy to best a veteran horsetrader. Grandpa was born on 27 NOV 1856 and his grandmother, Rachel, died in SEP 1868. So she had given her sons the colts and for some reason the old mare wasn't disposed of until two years after her death. If she gave Grandpa the calves he would only have been 12 years old at the time and after two years the calves would be of workable age. YOHO DIED SUNDAY AT HOSPITAL Simeon T. Yoho died at 5 a.m. Sunday at the Glen Dale hospital. He had been in failing health for a few years. Mr. Yoho lived in Greenfield ridge, near Howard. He was a son of Henry Yoho of Rines Ridge, who died in 1915. He was born about 68 years ago, a brother of T. A. Yoho, Walker W. Yoho, and Mrs. Annie Mason, who died several years ago, and Mrs. Rhoda Franklin of Eighth Street. His wife has been dead a year. The following children survive: Okey of Fairmont, Mrs. Etta Yeater of Woco, J. Win. merchant of Fairview, and Clarence of Greenfield ridge. Recollections: Remember Summertime visits to Grandpa Tim and Grandma Belle Yoho's Farm I would usually spend two to four weeks at Grandma Belle's, Grandpa Tim's and Uncle Okey's in the summer months. When I was at Grandma's, L. V. (son of Joe and Pearl Yoho) would usually come over and stay with me while visiting. As I look back we had great times. Grandma was a wonderful lady and not nearly as stern as Grandpa. She required us to do some chores in the house and kitchen; we fed the chickens, gatherered the eggs, fetched and milked the cows, helped separate the milk and rounded up the turkeys and the little biddies when there was a threatening rain storm. Grandpa would never let the turkeys be out in the storm because the old mother hen would sit down and let the little ones under her wings, oftentimes smothering them. Grandpa and Okey would take us to the garden, hayfield, or cornfield but as expected playing was much more fun than working. Grandpa was a "good Democrat" and always was involved in political campaigns and elections. I remember him taking me with him to register voters; I rode behind him on Nellie (Granpa's favorite riding horse) and we would go throughout the area and down each lane. He told me about the two party system and how it took both Democrats and Republicans for a democracy. He went on to say that each party had their best people running for office but the Democrats were superior and I should always vote a straight ticket. I have never forgotten what Grandpa said but I haven't always followed his advice. I remember when there was no electricity, no radios, no hot or cold running water, no indoor plumbing, or refrigerators. However, everyone had natural gas which was freely produced on Great Grandpa Henry's farm. For decades Grandpa Tim's farm had a bright flame that burned 24 hours a day in the side yard providing light throughout the ridge night after night. I would on occasions go to Uncle Tom's (Thomas Lindsey Yoho) and Uncle Joe's (Joseph Claude Yoho) to visit. At Uncle Tom's I would usually get a treat of some pie or a jelly sandwich from Aunt Ella (Ella Narcissis Yoho Yoho). Occasionally I would get a ride on Shannon, a big gray horse of Uncle Tom's. I remember going to their house at wheat "trash'in time" when the threshing crew would go through the community from farm to farm and the neighbors would move along to help each other. At Uncle Joe's they had the first electric lights in that neck of the woods. As I recall, this would have been in about 1930. Home electricity was made by a gasoline driven Delco generator, which was housed in a tiny building near the house. In Uncle Joe's shed, owned previously by Grandma Belle's father (Thomas Gatts), there were ... Dried tobacco leaves strung up on the walls. It had been grown, cut, cured and no doubt used for chewing and making of cigars by Grandpa Gatts. His son-in-law, Tim Yoho, regulary chewed Bloch Brothers Mail Pouch. Tim Yoho's grandson has also been known at times to take a pinch of Mail Pouch. I remember my Dad, Albert Lee Coffield, saying that during the summers he would come home to work on his Dad's farm and in the booming gas and oil fields to earn money for his return to school in the fall. He would always end up in the evenings at Timothy Yoho's to see Sue (Susan A. Yoho Coffield). Dad would always tell about his family working as hard and fast as they could and then going to Tim Yoho's to brag about how much work the Coffields had done. He found out the Yohos had out done them, always more work done. Yoho, 57, World War I veteran who saw service in France and a life resident of Marshall county, died Tuesday evening in the veterans hospital at Clarksburg, following a long illness. The body will be brought to Grisells, 805 Fifth street. Funeral arrangements are pending. Mr. Yoho was born on Rines Ridge, son of Timothy and Isabelle Gatts Yoho. He spent part of his life as a farmer, taught in rural schools, and later was an employee of the state road commission, retiring 10 years ago because of ill health. For 14 years he lived with his brother, Joe C. Yoho of Moundsville. A member of the Christian church, Mr Yoho was also affiliated with Earl Francis Post, No. 3, American Legion. He died on 22 MAR 1935 in Kent, Marshall Co, WV.97 He was buried in Northview Cem, New Martinsville, WV. RECOLLECTIONS: My grandfather, Cyrus yoho, had a farm at Kent, Marshall County, WV. The land, 400 acres, was left to him by his father, Timothy. In 1924 he had a new house built there. It remains today (1996) but looks bad. He gave each of his children $5,000. Cyrus would buy a load of coal from Fairmont, WV in the fall. Word would go out and people from Burch and Rines Ridges would come to purchase some. When the coal was weighed at the scale, some people would say, "I'm shor, I'll pay you later." but some never did. Cyrus wife was named Molly. She was the daughter of my great-grandparents, Mr and Mrs Wesley Rine. They had 10 children. One time when I visited them, they served buck wheat cakes. I poured what I thought was syrup only to find it was meat grease. It was what they used in place of syrup. My grandfather was very well known. He would loan money to anyone who asked and many times it was not repaid. In his funeral procession there were 125 cars. At that time not many people owned cars.
