Drusilla "Nellie" (Miller) Patterson, born July 7, 1877, in Silver Hill, Wetzel County, W. Va., was the daughter of Jasper Newton and Luticia (Simmons) Miller. She was a graduate of the Chicago School of Practical Nursing, probably before 1900. She lived the majority of her life in Cameron, Marshall County, where she did practical nursing. She and her cousin, Maude Simmons were both graduates of the same school.
Nellie's first husband was James C. Lowe and they had a child, Harold, who died when he was 11 months old. Her husband died shortly, after being kicked by a horse in Silver Hill. She then moved to Cameron where she became a nurse. She took care of Mrs. Patterson and when she died, Nellie married the husband, George Patterson, who owned the glass works in Cameron. She had no children to him.
Nellie was my great aunt, the sister of my grandmother, Arizona Miller Swann. Registered nurses Estella and Eva Elizabeth Swann, whose pictures and biographies are on this site, were the daughters of Arizona.
Nellie actually died in our house when I was a child. My mother lived at her house when she graduated from Cameron High School in 1928. Nellie died in 1951 and is buried at Highland Cemetery, near Cameron.
