ELEANOR G. FLAHERTY

Eleanor G. Flaherty was born in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania on August 27, 1890 to Ellen (Kennedy) and John J. Flaherty. She had a younger brother, Peter John, and two younger sisters, Anna Gertrude and Bessie. In October of 1900 Eleanorís mother died while giving birth to twins, Mary and Sarah, both of whom passed away within 3 months of their birth. At this point, Pete, Anna and Bessie stayed in Pittsburgh to be raised by a relative and Eleanor was sent to West Virginia to be raised by another relative while studying to become a nurse.

She married Roy Durbin of Ohio and had two daughters, Mildred and Betty Jane. They made their home in Follansbee, Brooke County, West Virginia. A Follansbee Review article from May 11, 1966 has a photo of Eleanor being honored at the Lincoln Day Dinner at Bethany College for over 50 years of outstanding service to the Republican Party in Brooke County.

Eleanor passed away on January 7, 1972 and is laid to rest at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Weirton, West Virginia.
