JOSEPHINE HOOD MATHEWS was born 1911 in Sedro-Wooley, Whatcom County, Washington. Her parents were James Hood Mathews and Allie Everett (Summers) Mathews. When Josephine (Jo) was only five, her mother died and she and her younger sister, Helen June Mathews, were raised by their father until his death in 1926. The girls stayed briefly with relatives in Washington until they went to live in Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia, with their uncle George Lewis Summers and his wife, Virginia (Woods) Summers. George Summers was a doctor in Huntington and his wife, a registered nurse; so it was natural both girls would follow in the medical field. Jo graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing in 1935, followed by her sister who graduated in 1936. Jo married Clarence (Jake) Thomas White and they had one son, Clarence Timothy White. Jo's working years were spent at the Cincinnati & Ohio Hospital in Huntington. She died January 1994 and she and Clarence are buried at Barboursville, West Virginia.
