1. Lawrence Pearl Sr. was born on 28 Aug 1792 in Frederick Co., Maryland, died BET 26 AND 28 OCT 1868 in Deavertown, Morgan Co., Ohio, and was buried on 30 Oct 1868 in St. Dominic's Cemetery, Mcluney, Harrison Twp. Perry Co., Ohio.

General Notes: The Perrells, and all of the variations of the name came from the British Isles. After the Normans invaded the British Isles in 1066, there eventually came intermarriages. The "root" of the name is the French "pere" meaning father, sire. Perrell (with various combinations of R's and L's), Perrill, Parrill, Perrin, Perrott are some of the many derivations.

We are still uncertain about the Pearl spelling, but they aren't from Spain, as stated in the biography of Francis Marion Pearl. We can only guess that those early Pearls in Massachusetts didn't know how to spell??? Both Daniel Perrell of Falling Waters, West Virginia, and Carolyn Perrell Wilson of Martinsburg, West Virginia, attribute the spelling change to a family feud "way back". More recently some, including one of Daniel's brothers, changed to Pearrell. We note here that the Perrells in West Virginia accent the first syllable of the name--Perr'ell, so it sounds like Pearl. We in Ohio accent the last syllable, so it sounds like Purr--l'. The Perrells of North Carolina pronounce it like the word "peril".

Lawrence Pearl is buried at St. Dominic's Cemetery, McLuney, Perry Co., Ohio. The church, St. Dominic's, which originally was next to the cemetery, is now in Crooksville, Perry Co., Ohio, & is known as the Church of the Atonement. It is located in the NW 1/4 of Section 25 on the west side of TR 162, 1/2 mile north of Co. Road 84 (Pole Cat Rd.). It sits back from the road, up on a knoll.

On the St. Dominic Cemetery records it says that they were recorded by the Catholic Record Society (appeared in the Catholic Record Society Bulletin in June 1980, Mrs. Betty Bellous and Mrs. Marion Berry on 27 July 1980, Mimi Underwood and Nancy Rains in August 1983, and Norma Ortman and Maxine Fisher on 4 July 1987). The cemetery is in very poor condition, accounting for the differences between the four recordings. Differences have been noted in brackets ( ). It is left up to the researcher to determine which version is correct.
Lawrence's tombstone reads: Lawrence Pearl, died 28 Oct. 1868, age 76 years, 2 months, born 28 Aug. 1792, There is also a paragraph on the bottom of the tombstone which I couldn't read. Someone said that the tombstone said that he was born in Frederick Co., Md.
The Church of the Atonement is located at 320 Winter Street, Crooksville, Ohio 43731

Names mentioned in Lawrence Pearl's Will are as follows: John J. Pearl, John Gossman, Lawrence Pearl, Catharine Brecht, Ruth Deaver, Francix X. Pearl, W. A. Pearl, heirs of S. A. Deaver, Susannah Gossman, Mary Springer, Anthony Diss, Eleanore Longstreth.

Someone who is related to Alexander Pearl back in Md. sent my cousin a bunch of things. There were 2 letters of real interest, however, it turned out to be a dead end. One was to a Mrs. Harrison W. Pearl, 17 Bartlett Ave., Belmont, Mass. from Mrs.
Joe B. Pearl, Route 2, Rogers, Ark., dated May 31, 1954:

Dear Mrs. Pearl:

This is in answer to your letter of May 19 on which you request information about my husband's family. My husband's name is Joe Bernard Pearl. He was born in Caldwell, Kansas, Mar. 26, 1907. His father was Charles Albert Pearl. He was born Jan. 13, 1970 at Junction City, Kansas*. I don't know his mother's date of birth. Her maiden name is Emma Willett. Both parents are dead. The family home is in El Reno, Okla. The husband has two brothers and a sister living. They are of English & French ancestry. An uncle George S. Pearl compiled a genealogy of the family several years ago. I don't know if he completed it or not. He died several years ago. His widow lives in Fort Worth, Texas. You might be able to get some information from her. Hope this meager information will be of some help to you. If there is anything else I can do for you please let me know.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Joe B. Pearl (Mrs. Mary)
The above letter & letter below were written by Sylvia Pearl Inman's relative.
*He was born in Ohio, not Kansas.
Sylvia I called George S. Pearl, Jr. who lives in Dallas, Texas. He said he knows nothing of his father compiling a genealogy of the Pearl family & said he knows nothing of the lineage. You could tell he wasn't interested either. That darn well may be because of the black there. Have you ever contacted him or any of his siblings or did you know anything about this? We have been very stuck on getting anything else. Have you talked to Patricia this year.

Here is the other letter:

Letter dated Sep. 28, 1933, from James Pearl, 3700 Lake Park, Ave., Chicago, Illinois to Mrs. Florence Fender Binkley, 1120 W. 40 St., Oklahoma City, Oklahoma:

Dear Mrs. Binckley:
You may recall that when you were here I claimed to have had a record of Lawrence Pearl and that I failed to produce it.
I found the record in the letter of one of my correspondents quite accidentally dating back to 1925.
He had met a Charles A. Pearl in Portland, Oregon at that time, who was a grandson of Lawrence Pearl of Morgan Co., Ohio who said Lawrence was born in East Virginia*.
Whether by that he used the word East to distinguish from West Virginia is of course unknown to me.
Your letter mentions Lawrence as having been born in Greene Co., Pa. This Charles A. Pearl may have the records you seek.
Kindly let me have your complete family record as far back as possible at your earliest convenience. Omit nothing.
Sincerely yours
*Lawrence was born in Frederick Co., MD. His daughter Susannah was born in Frederick Co., MD & son Joseph was probably born there also. He was married in Montgomery Co., MD and

Joseph Pearl left Ohio and moved to Missouri in 1850. He apparently moved back to Ohio at some point in his life. He could not be located at the time of his father, Lawrence's, death and was presumed dead, but he turned up later in Ohio, as there is a death record for him in Morgan County. Also, it looks like it is Joseph on the 1850 and 1860 Ohio censuses shown below.

Tombstone Record has SARAH A. - Wife of HENRY T. DEAVER - Died - Feb. 22, 1852.
St. Francis/Chapel Hill Cemetery, Row 3: Deaver, Sarah A. (Ann Pearl), d. Feb. 22, 1852, w/o Henry T. Deaver.

On the marriage record Sarah's name is spelled Sarah Ann Perril.

Children: We have been unable to locate this family in the 1850 census, which would name the children. Lawrence Pearl, Sr.'s Will simply states "equal division among the children" and the settlement statements say "children of S. A. Deaver". A letter from the Morgan County, Ohio Genealogical Society lists the following as heirs of Lawrence, info from Box 144, presumably children of Sara and Henry Deaver: Martha and William P. Appleman, Francis and Matilda Deaver, Minerva Weiner, John Heines (? or Weiner?), T.T. (or T.H.?) Deaver, Mary A. Deaver, Mary A. Potts. Neither have we found, except for Martha, with whom these children were living in 1860. Martha is listed with her aunt and uncle, Elizabeth and Bartholemew Springer. It is possible that Henry T. Deaver had not yet entered the Civil War and was making a home for his children.

After much research, we still haven't found a T.T. (or T.H.? Deaver, or a Mary A. Deaver, presumably his wife. It is likely that T.T. (T.H.) was the first born of Sarah and Henry T. Deaver. This can't be true since he isn't listed on the 1850 Census. Whoever that is was still alive when Lawrence died in 1868.

Obituary of John James Pearl, extracted from the New Lexington Herald, Book of Obituaries for 1920-1921,1922-1923 in library at Junction City, Perry County, Ohio:
Funeral of John Pearle
The funeral of John Pearle, 89*, who died at his home at Maxville, last Wednesday evening, was held from St. Patrick's Catholic church at Junction City, Friday morning. Burial was made in the church cemetery.
*John was 86, according to St. Patrick's Church records, & 87 yrs., 19 days according to Perry Co. records. Perry Co. records are correct.
Janet Pearl O'Hara said that there are a lot of Pearls buried in St. Patrick's cemetery.
_______________________
The Pearl homestead was in Maxville, Ohio, on Monday Creek Road (apparently now called "Bell Bottom Road". It was called "Possom Hollar". It stood empty for several years. A retired Air Force man and his wife bought the house, barn and land, and it is now a Franciscan Retreat. They have the house and barn and about 16 acres. The barn had the original roof that John James and Clarence put on it. They added onto the house and built a new house with a chapel. Donald J. Pearl, son of Clarence, was there in about 1980 and went through the old house. Janet's daughter Loretta said that to get to the property you go to Junction City & then drive a few miles down the road until you come to the little town of Maxville. This is where you will find Bell Bottom Rd. There is a Monday Creek but not what we want.

Newpaper Article from Patricia Jennes:
SURPRISED ON THEIR WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
Sacred Heart Congregation Assists in Celebrating Golden Wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Pearl
OVER TWO HUNDRED ATTEND:
Guests of Honor Receive Many Beautiful Gifts as Tokens of Esteem of their Friends:
Over two hundred persons attended the celebration of the Golden Wedding of Mr. and Mrs. F. X. Pearl held Monday at Sacred Heart Church. The celebration was a complete surprise to the couple, who had not suspected the plans of their friends of Sacred Heart congregation. Relatives who arrived also kept the secret from them until Monday morning. Renewal of the marriage vows was taken at the church in the morning, closing with a benediction by Rev. Joseph Ress, rector of Sacred Heart. Music was furnished by Miss Anna Clifford, Angus McDonald and members of Sacred Heart choir. Father Carey of Fairbury preached an excellent sermon for the occasion.

At 9:30 a.m. Solemn High Mass was sung by Rev. Fr. Lutz of Turkey Creek, assisted by Father Carey of Fairbury as deacon, Father Sproll of Seward as sub-deacon and Father Longnot of Alexandria as master of ceremonies. The altar boys were Joseph Boyes, Joseph Helget, Louis Griffin and William Nacke.

At noon a bounteous dinner was served by the ladies of Sacred Heart in the church parlors. At the close of the dinner M. H. Cruise, as spokesman, in a few well chosen words presented Mr. and Mrs. Pearl with two beautifully upholstered rocking chairs, tokens of the regard of their friends. To this Mr. Pearl responded, thanking his many friends and the members of Sacred Heart for their kindness in remembering him and his wife on their golden wedding day. Short talks were given also by Father Ress, H. W. Deaver of Alexandria and others. Miss Gertrude Monohon gave a reading and Father Ross read a poem which was written especially for the occasion by Calvin Johnson of Carleton.

Mr. and Mrs. Pearl, who are among Thayer County's oldest and most substantial residents, were married fifty years ago in North Vernon, Indiana. In 1884, they came to make their home in Thayer County where Mr. Pearl, with the help of his good wife, has for many years been successfully engaged in farming and fruit growing. Their children now living are: Martha, teacher in a parochial school in New Orleans, Louisiana; Louis F., who resides in Canada; Mrs. Alice Brophy of Valier, Montana; Mrs. Agnes Hruska of Gilead; and Mrs. Mary Monohon of Hebron.

Mr. Pearl stated Tuesday that he will always look back on this celebration of his golden wedding as one of the happiest events of his life.

F. X. PEARL DEAD AFTER BRIEF ILLNESS

Aged resident of Hebron and Thayer County:

Had Been Active for His Years, Ill but Two Weeks--Funeral Services Held in Sacred Heart Church:

F. X. Pearl, an old-time resident of Thayer County and Hebron, passed away Monday, April 13, 1925, aged 81 years, 11 months and 2 days.

He had been widely known throughout the county, until the past few years, being an officer in the Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Co. of Thayer Co. He had been in good health and active for his age, making a trip back to his old home in Ohio a few years ago. Respect for his sterling qualities and industrious life, he has always been quiet and retiring.

A little more than two weeks ago he was stricken with pneumonia, which rapidly brought him to the point of death. During his illness, those who know him best say that he was a model of patience and cheerfulness, complaining only that his child kept him in bed when he wished to get up and plow.

Francis Xavier Pearl was born at Deavertown, Morgan County, Ohio, May 11, 1840 and passed away April 13, 1925. He was married at North Vernon, Indiana, September 25, 1866 to Miss Sarah Margaret Lilly. God blessed this union with eleven children, six* of whom died in infancy.
*We can only account for 5 children dying in infancy.

In 1884, he came to Thayer Co., Nebraska, and here he has made his home ever since. His golden wedding anniversay was celebrated September 25, 1916. That same year, December 21, 1916, Mrs. Pearl died. He leaves to mourn his loss five children: Sister Mary Anselma, S.S. of N.D. of Lawrence Nebraska; Mrs. J. E. Brophy of Valier, Montana; Mr. Louis Pearl of Williams, Nebraska, Mrs. Agnes Hruska of Gilead and Mrs. Mary Monohon of Hebron, besides sixteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and numerous relatives and friends.

For years, closest friends state, his life has been a model of simple devotion to duty, and death came peacefully to "Grandpa Pearl", and left him with a smile on his face.

His bent form and silvery hair will be missed from the community. Sympathy is extended to the children of this aged man.

Funeral services were conducted by Father Joseph Ress at the Sacred Heart Church in Hebron, Wednesday _____and interment made at Hebron Cemetery. Many friends gathered to pay their last tribute to the departed who had lived in the community for years.

According to the 11 June 1900 Census and the 11 May 1910 Census, they had a total of 11 children. So far we have records of only six. In the 1900 Census, only six were living. In the 1910 Census, only five were living.

F. X. Pearl - Pioneer in Thayer Co. Goes to His Reward:
One more in Heaven!
One less at home.
One voice of welcome hushed & ever more
One farewell word unspoken;
one the shore
Where parting comes not, landed one
one soul more;
One more in heaven!

Involuntarily this thought flashed into our minds when the report was spread abroad. "Grandpa Pearl is dead." For years the life of this saintly old man has been an edifying example of piety and simple devotion to duty for us all, and his peaceful, happy death was its fitting close.

Just a little more than two weeks ago, he was stricken with pneumonia, which rapidly brought him to the point of death. During his illness, he was a model of patience and cheerfulness, complaining only that the doctor and his children kept him in bed, when he wished to get up and plow. He was 85 years old.

Francis Xavier Pearl was born in Deavertown, Morgan Co., Ohio, May 11, 1840, thus having reached the age of 84 years, 11 months and 2 days on the day of his demise, April 13, 1925. He was married at North Vernon, Indiana, Sept. 25, 1866, to Miss Sarah Margaret Lilly. God blessed this union with eleven children, six of whom died in infancy. In 1884, he came to Thayer Co., Nebraska, and here he has made his home ever since. His golden wedding anniversay was celebrated Sep. 25, 1916. That same year, December 21, 1916, Mrs. Pearl died.

He leaves to mourn his loss, five children: Sister Mary Anselma, S.S. of N.D., of Lawrence, Nebr.; Mrs. J. E. Brophy of Valier, Montana; Mr. Louis Pearl of Williams, Nebraska; Mrs. Agnes Hruska of Gilead, and Mrs. Mary Monohon of Hebron; besides sixteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and numerous relatives and friends.

We shall miss him, -- that bent form and that silvery head, going about his work so quietly and unobtrusively -- an inspiration to us all, yet we do not mourn for we are so sure that he is:
One More in Heaven and this is but
Another thought to brighten cloudy days,
Another link our souls on High to raise;
To Home and Heaven.

To the bereaved children we offer our sympathy. Truly they have lost a father in the truest, most beautiful sense of the word. Yet why should they grieve? A more consoling death bed scene than their dear father's could scarcely be imagined. He died with a smile on his lips, his heart at peace, for he was going Home.
This is not home, where cramped in
earthly mold
Our sight of Christ is dim, our love is cold.
But there, where face to face we shall behold,
Is Home and Heaven! One More at Home,--
That home where separation cannot be
That home whence none are missed eternally,
With the poet let us say,
Lord Jesus grant us all a place with Thee,
At Home in Heaven!
