MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION UNDERGROUND RAILWAY From Local History of Greene County and Southwestern Pennsylvania by Andrew J. Waychoff. Page 38 - Arch Adams, a colored man, is said to have been the first postmaster at Hunter's Cave and held the office for many years. Page 50 - Underground Railroad - Once branch led down Dunkard Creek to Bob Maples. There about his mill and other buildings near some deep ravines, Mr. Maple would feed and hide the fugitives and later forward them across the river at night - persons meeting them there and taking them to Uniontown, another station. Page 85 - The younger Henry Taylor while hunting one morning on the ridge toward Pursley Creek was suddenly confronted by a haggard looking colored woman. He directed her to the home of John Adams on Hargus Creek. There was nearby in the woods a family of colored people in hiding. John Adams kept them about a week. John Remley of Rogersville placed baskets of food near some springs in the woods thinking that hunger would force them out and he could find and catch, them. John Adams getting fearful, sent then to a family named Redmond above Holbrook. After about three days he sent them to Rev. Mr. William Leonard. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* PEARLS IN MASSACHUSETTS (NO known connection to 1700s MD Pearls.) The John Pearl from Marblehead, Mass. was b. in Skidby, Engl. in 1671. Virginia and Lincoln Co., Kentucky. According to one source, the Fauquier Co. PEARL families started with a sea captain who came from Bristol or Liverpool, England to Baltimore Maryland about 1743 and settled in America. He is supposed to have had at least two sons. One settled in Connecticut and the other in Fauquier Co. Virginia. Another source indicated 4 sons, three of which settled in "Eastern states (one in New York) and the last in Virginia. It is possible that some of the Pearl-Perrill families in Maryland are from one of the sons. It appears that there were others with these surnames in both Virginia and in Maryland in the 1600s. There is a line of Pearl families in New England which started with John b about 1650 and his brother Nicholas. John settled near Bradford-Boxford, Massachusetts and Nicholas near Ipswich, MA and died 1706 near Dover, New Hampshire. Many New England Pearl families are descendants of those individuals which would seem to be a separate line. Reference: A History of Kentucky by W. H. Perrin, J. H. Battle and G. C.
