Box 522, Marietta, OH 45750-0522. I own a copy of the book. (If you have any questions about dates in the book, let me know, it could be a typo.) Mr. Cronin put together a very complete history of our Cronin family, especially considering the time it was created without computers, copiers or the WEB. He has included topo maps showing the location of cemeteries and home sites. Pictures of family members as well as cemeteries and tombstones are included throughout the book, as well as copies of historical documents pertaining to various family members. A section called Cronin Relations was added at the end of the genealogy with names of persons living in the vicinities where this Cronin family lived. He was not able to identify the family connection, but they are probably related to this Cronin family. CRONIN (Irish Ð O'CRONIN) is the name of a family of Croca Laoidhe in West Cork, originally seated in the neighborhood of Clomkilty, but now numerous throughout the Counties of Cork, Kery, and Limerick. A leading family in O'CRONIN was the stewards of a church near Gougane Berra. CRONIN, with which the prefix O is very seldom retained today, is one of the most numerous surnames, just failing to be included in the list of the hundred commonest which of course includes those of Scottish and English origin located in Belfast Ireland and its neighborhood. Actually CRONIN has the 101st place. The great majority of people so called belong to Westmunster, particularly County Cork. In 1659 it was recorded as a principal name in County Limerick (Barony of Connello) and County Kerry (Barony of Maguniy) as well as in the two baronies of County Cork. Curiously enough in the north and east of the county, not in the west as might be expected, since the family of O'CRONIN is one of the Corca Laoidhe located in the western part of County Cork. Croneen was formerly a common spelling of the name. It is noted in the place-name Ballycroneen in east Cork, which was identified sometimes as Croneen's town, but is also said to commemorate St. CRONIN. In the Census of Ireland, about 1659, O'CRONIN is listed among the principal Irish names in the Barony of Orrery and Kilmore in County Cork, similarly the form O'Croyne appears among the principal Irish names in Condon and Clangibbon Barony, also in County Cork. There were a total of 176 CRONIN births registered in 1890. Of this total 161 were in Munster, and of these 102 were in County Cork and 42 in County Kerry. In the 1911 Census 261 families called CRONIN were recorded in County Kerry. It has been reported by information passed down through the family that his father, who also is reported to have had the given name Michael, brought Michael to the United States from County Cork, Ireland. This migration to the United States has been calculated by the author to take place around the year 1774, while young Michael was in his infancy. Michael's father is reported to have been accompanied on the voyage by a Miss Tallman, who is reported to have served as the governess for the infant Michael. Michael's mother, who is reported to have the surname of Halahan, remained in Ireland. It is further reported that Michael's father later married Miss Tallman. The void of early census reports and tax records for the eastern seaboard states for the period between 1770 and 1800 prohibit detail research. However, it is believed that Michael's father, after landing in the United States, settled in the area bordered by the eastern part of Pennsylvania and the western part of New Jersey, within the region of the Delaware River, near Bucks County, Pennsylvania. This belief is borne out through research of the Revolutionary War service records in the National Archives. A war service record reflects the service of one Michael CRONIN, believed to be Michael's father, as a soldier serving in Captain Allen McClain's troops in the Continental Regiment commanded by Colonel John Patton. This record shows Michael CRONIN serving for six months, between June and September 1776, at a location near Middlebrook, New Jersey. It is interesting to note that Michael was paid for this war service at a rate of six and two-thirds dollars per month. The first documented evidence pertaining to the genealogy history of Michael CRONIN's family is recorded in the United States Census for the year 1810. This census record shows Michael married and residing in Menallen Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, near the City of Uniontown. Through this record and later documented records, the author has calculated the year of birth of Michael as being approximately 1772. His wife is Pricillah Pulley. Pricillah was born in the State of Virginia in 1777. Michael and Pricillah's marriage is estimated to have been in 1795. Their family, in 1810, consisted of two sons and two daughters. Michael's occupation at this location in Pennsylvania is believed to have been farming; however, it is very likely that Michael served as part of the Irish labor force that helped construct the first segment of the First National Road between Cumberland, Maryland, and Wheeling, Virginia, during the early years of the 1800's. It was this same road that he utilized when he moved his family and settled in Ohio. Information passed down through the family indicates that shortly before Michael's migration into the State of Ohio, Michael and his eldest sons made a reconnaissance trip into Monroe County, Ohio, to locate a suitable site where he might settle his family. During this reported trip, which is believed to have lasted a period of a few months, Michael and his sons constructed a cabin in Wayne Township within which the family could live. After completion of the cabin, Michael and his sons journeyed back to Fayette County to arrange the moving of the family. The migration of the family from Fayette County to Monroe County is estimated to have been accomplished during the spring of 181_(can't read) or 1816. Many of the early records of Monroe County, Ohio, which could have aided the research and recording of the Michael CRONIN family history, have been destroyed as a result of the Monroe County Courthouse burning in 1857. The destruction of these county records has created great difficulty in the compilation of the family data and has necessitated time-consuming research of many other records t approximate the exact family history. Michael's principle occupation was farming while living in Monroe County. During 1835, Michael and three of his sons (Joseph, James and Aaron) purchased and were issued land patents of 280 acres of land upon which they had settled. These land patents were issued by United States Land Management Offices in Marietta and Chillicothe, Ohio. Records researched to date indicate that Michael and Pricillah raised a family of 12 children, seven sons and five daughters. Michael's activity, besides farming, included participation in the local community affairs for that section of Wayne Township, known as Edwina. Michael's death is believed to have occurred around 1838. After his death, Pricillah lived with members of her family. Her death occurred on January 5, 1853. She is buried in the Barber Ridge Cemetery which is located a short distance north of the Michael CRONIN farm. The original land patented by Michael and his sons is still owned and farmed, in part, by CRONIN family descendant. Some of the original oil wells drilled on the CRONIN farm after Michael's death are still producing crude oil. The topography of the land settled by Michael and his family in Monroe County is quite hilly. Threading through the valley portion of the CRONIN farm is a small branch of Rich Fork Creek, referred to as CRONIN Creek. Last, it is worthy to note that the cartographers responsible for drawing and constructing maps and charts for the United States Geological Survey have, down through the years, continuously identified that area where Michael CRONIN settled in Wayne Township, on the Graysville, Ohio, Quadrangle Chart as CRONIN Hollow. They settled in Wayne Township, Monroe Co., for a short period, then moved to Washington Co. near Marietta, Ohio. It is also believed that Sarah Jane died while on one of these trips and is probably buried in IL, IN, or MO. A primitive corner cabinet still exists in my family, which my father said was on the last covered wagon returning from one of these trips. It was said they started with three large covered wagons, each pulled by probably four to six horses when they started their trip west. The family returned with only one wagon and the horses to pull it. The other horses and some supplies were used to barter with the Indians, to keep the family safe from harm.
