W.Va Marriage Notes for AUSTIN PETERS and EMMA WILSON: This one line of the Peters family for a while put Mc on their name. There were two stories told about how this came about. One by my grandmother Martha Jane Peters Morris and the other by her half sister Ethel Peters Spiker. Martha Jane and Ethel were more like real sisters the half part was not an important factor. Martha Jane was nineteen years older than my Great Aunt Ethel. Both women were very devout Christian women and set very good examples. Their children were also very good Christian people. As for the stories about putting Mc on the name came about because in one case the girls in the family didn't want to be called Peters because of some friends of theirs in school so they wanted Mc put on the name. Than the second story was, because their were some other girls with Mc on their name that the Peters girls didn't like, so they took the Mc off of their name and later put it back on. This was not done in a legal sense of changing their name this was children wanting it done. I grew up thinking of my great grandfather as Grandpa McPeters, but I also knew the Mc didn't belong on the name. Some tombstones say McPeters and some say McPaters which both are incorrect. This family came from Germany and not from Holland as some researchers in the family believe. My Grandma Morris referred to them as Pennsylvania Dutch and I believe even she thought they were Dutch people from Holland. While doing research I found they were from Germany and came to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and Later came to Lancaster, Ohio in Fairfield County. Later John moved to Washington County, Ohio. They also lived in Belmont county, Morgan County and Noble County, Ohio. In 1850 They appear on the census for Wash. Co. Oh. This same township changed from Auelius township to Jefferson Township when this part of Washington County was taken to form part Noble County, Ohio. Whoever, had my grandmothers tombstone printed up put her name as Martha Jane McPaters Morris. This is incorrect as her name was Martha Jane Peters Morris. All other lines of the Peters family Ancestors and decendants only went by Peters and never heard of Mc being added. Birth, Death, marriage and etc. court records have only Peters not Mc. As to who the girls were in the family who did this, I am not sure which ones, whether John Peters daughters or Austins Daughters or both since the two stories were told by these two sisters who were years apart in age and I believe both stories to have happened the way they were told as they happened twice or maybe three times during these years. Notes for AMANDA COX: Found this in the Cemetary records for the Fairview Cemetery and Amanda's grave is called a road side grave. It is approximately 100 yards before arriving at the roadside stones,there is a single stone marker about 25-30 yards off the left hand side of the road at the edge of the woods and an open field. This cemetery has been variously called the Fairview, Cox and Spindletop. On the 1911 Farm Map, this cemetery is on the M.R. Cox Farm where the Fairview School was located. Also Federal Ridge is refered to as Spindletop. Directions to this cemetery is from state route two in St. Marys,Take county road three (Hebron Rd) 4.8 miles to the intersection with County Road 28 (Federal Ridge Rd. Turn left on county road 28 and go 2.8 miles. The cemetery can be seen on the left hand side of the road. There are two tombstones and several depressions of other possible graves. She wrote it accompanying a gift of a clothespin doll on December 25, 1966. This was Gladys's birthday. This is the story. I am just a clothespin, old and aged; I have hung for free and also for wages. I've hung enough clothes to go falf round the world, now I've ended up as an ugly girl. My story is old, quite antique, I've hung clothes from head to feet for forty years for the young, aged and babies sweet. There were Grandma and Grandpa out on the farm Ethel Gladys Weekley and William Preston Rollins Jr. of Ritchie County, granny too (Kathryn VanCourt and William Preston Rollins Sr.) plus aunts and uncles and cousins too. I started from that farm you see and came to town (St. Marys) and glory be more clothes than I ever expected to see. As a gift, that woman (Danea Lee Rollins) married James Wiley Morris 7-16-35 ) made a slave out of me. Another grandma, grandpa (James Braxton Morris and Martha Jane Peters) and Grandpap, too (Austin Abraham Peters), aunts, uncles, cousins quite a few; friends, neighbors, and restaurants too. How much can a clothespin do? My life seemed over, but it was not to be there was my master (James Wiley Morris), My boss (Danea Lee Rollins Morris) and babies three; My life sparked up one Christmas morn, my boss gave birth to her first born (12-25-37 Kathryn Gladys Morris). A baby girl so soft and sweet, more clothes to hang from head to feet. This story continues through the birth of son Larry, daughter Janet, and all the grand children as listed in the genealogy report. The Clothespin kept hanging clothes through out this time.
