I love what you have said in your on words and ways on this web page of West Virginia. There is something about these hills that gets into your blood and when you leave for a while there is a hankering to get back to the hills of West Virginia.

I was born in Ritchie County and raised in Wood County and even the roots of Ritchie County call me back every so often. There is certainly something about these hills.

Thank you. I believe you have the only known pictures of my father's ancestors. My father was Bernard Bonnel Hall, the son of Harry Harrison Hall, I think. However, your message says Harry had one son. My dad had two brothers and a sister, Lester and Thelma. I had a brother Jeffery Hayes Hall who I assume was named after Hayes Highland Hall. My grandaughter carries on the name. Her name is Molly Hayes Lahue. I would like to know more if you have additional information.
Thanks.

My father taught in the St.Marys school system during this time. I began my formal education at the one room school in Hebron, Miss Lucy Houseman presiding I have a copy of the school picture from 1951 - 15 students in 8 grades. I know the names and would love to find some of them. If you reply with an e-mail address, Ill be glad to forward the picture and names.
Maybe you could help me find them or point me to someone who could.
I now live near Nashville, TN (in Gallatin, TN).

Congrats on a cool web site and Best Wishes

Bob Evans

I am in Tucson Arizona and working on tracking any of my father's family. His name is James Harrison Roberts Jr. He was born in Pleasants County (lived on a farm in St Marys W.V.) in 1924. His father James Harrison Roberts Sr. was born in St Marys at the turn of the 20th century. They relocated to Tucson when my father was about 9 yrs old. The rest of the family, stayed in St Marys. My uncle George Roberts now owns the farm(no longer a working farm)but we have no trace of my grandfathers brothers or their children. It's been a difficult but interesting journey trying to find out information from so long ago. I have made a little progress here and there. So wish me luck and if you know or knew of any of the Roberts or Cain or Kain family please foward my e-mail address. They may be related! Enjoyed your web page. I hope to visit the area soon. thanks, Deborah Roberts

Good day,

Had it not been for todays lousy weather I'd not found your site.

I'm a bit confused by the claim " last of the gun fighters".

I was with VMF(AW)-235 and as I recall we were the last F-8 unit in Vietnam ( Mag-11 DaNang ) and that was what we were called.

But -- all that doesn't really matter.
You have a well done site.

Thanks for your service to our country.

In doing ancestry research I found most of my grandmother's family (Hutchison, Bean,Gilkerson) were born/raised in Cabell county WVA.
I found the Official Application to be an Honorary Hillbilly hysterical. My grandparents on the other side were from the hills of Kentucky. Ironically, I came across this site while trying to find information on Hillbilly traditions and heritage - the town I now live in has had a Hillbilly as the high school mascot for over 50 years and we have all been proud of it. We always felt it represented people who had close family ties and would "fight" to protect their territory. Recently, some newcomers to town have decided the Hillbilly "logo" is demeaning and offensive. Having ancestors that would definitely qualify as authentic hillbillies I was quite offended.

Dear Rockerbilly,
I enjoyed you web site. I stumbled across I while searching for some info on my mother's family. She was Eva June Bailey born I believe at Sugar Creek in 1921. She was one of 7 children, six girls and one boy. My grandparents were Clyde and Mary Wigner Bailey. When I was a small girl I have vivid memories of visiting my grandparents home and going fishing at the old fishing hole with my Grandpa Bailey. I also remember having to us the old pump to get water and barb wire fences. A few years ago my brother and I decided to visit the old homestead and visit the family cemetary, (Lamp/Bailey). It was sad as well as heartwarming to see familiar sites as the old road and gate to get to their home. Thank you for the pleasure of remembering.

I also attented the Willy School on French Creek for one year,(a one room school) a super experience. I was interested in the genealogy papers your mother had left, and hope if William L. Wilson (gg granfather) or Jefferson B Wilson (g granfather) or George B Wilson (granfather) (all of St.Marys) appear in them you would consider letting me know. I have done some research on the family tree and would be happy to share it with you if its the same family.
Thank you very much.

I have a friend who teaches at PCMS [Steve Barksdale] and just found this site as I was checking out St. Marys. Have you heard the story of how to tell a native - should apply as well to WV as NH. A woman was talking to an old New Hampshire native down at the corner store. "Eben", she said, "I know that I can never be considered a native, as I wasn't born here. But, what about my sons? They were born here and have lived here all their lives [so far, the old native is thinking]" "Harumph", Eben said. "If the cat had kittens in the oven, would you call'em muffins?" Enjoy!

That was the most beautiful thing I have ever read on being a native West Virginian. I am now living in Europe, but was born and raised in the West Virginia mountains. We didn't have much money as I do now, and I have saw many places and made money. Yet, my mind and heart are always laying in the West Virginia mountains where I know the best of worlds were and will always be for me. Thanks for the definition of a true West Virginian.:-) God Bless

Hey, good to read you. I left WV 23 years ago only to be less than 2 hours away here in central Ohio. Still I don't get back often enough. While I grew up in Vienna, I had many summers in Gauley Bridge and Falls View as my mother and I followed my father's work when school was out. As a now typical Ohioan, we often vacation at the beaches of the Carolinas. My favorite part of the trip is along the WV turnpike where I can again see the beautiful West Virginia hills.

A friend and also former WV native sent me your site. I will be back to read more.

Thanks!

Dear Rockerbilly,
I have really enjoyed reading your Rocker Talk. My family is from St. Marys[no apostrophe]!! My grandparents were Clarence West Sr. and Rosa [Diest] West and they lived at 421 Barkwill St. It's the only brick house on Barkwill and right next to the Baptist Church. My father Clarence West Jr. was born in 1924 and he and his sister Clela [West] Radcliff grew up there. My dad graduated from St. Marys High I think in 1942, then attended Marietta College. He then served in WWII. He married my mother Anne Louise Cox [from Ritchie Cty.]in 1948. I was born in 1953 and we moved to Calif. when I was 3 yrs. old. My only memories of St. Marys are from vacation trips home and my mother's memories. My father passed away in 1996 but I have many relatives that still live in W.Va. and Ohio [Mainly around Lowell.

Well I've gone on long enough. Nice meeting you even if it is over the internet!!!

Yours truly, Marcia West

My Dad gave me a hat, a long time ago and I still have it, that says, "There are only two kinds of people, West Virginians and those who wish they were."
My parents were born and raised in WV, as were their parents, etc. So was my sister and I. We both left to join the military and have never been back, except to visit. I really enjoy my trips back to the "hills" and stay as long as I can. On my last trip back I took my 7 year old grandson and began teaching him how to speak "hillbilly." I want him to be bilingual so he can impress his teachers in school (he lives in Kansas). Although his Dad has spent a lot of time in WV with me, I am not too sure he is impressed with my efforts! Oh well, we try. Don't want the language to die out. Anyway, enjoy your website and have sent it to all of my family so they will know more about WV. Keep up the good work.

I am a young lad. But I really enjoyed your stories. I think learning the history in your home town is so great. My mother, (Mary Jane (Davis) Hunt), was born and raised here in Pleasants County and my father, (Charles Lee Hunt), was born in Sandusky, OH but he has lived in Pleasants County for some years now. He was taken away from his parents for a while when he was a young child. Harvey Cunningham took him in and raised him. There was also another Cunningham family on Rock Run that he spent some time with. Other than living in a part of Ritchie County for a short time he has always stayed right here in Pleasants County.
I am 31 years old and I would never think about moving from this little town of St. Marys. I have 3 young children and I think that this is an ideal place to raise a family. They don't need the "fast lane life", they grow up to fast the way it is. By the way I am married to Dallas Scadden son of Lester Scadden and Beulah Flowers both of St. Marys.
I just wanted to send you a little note to let you know that I really enjoyed your stories. I will pass them on!!
Thanks So Much, Shelly

I'm a descendent, ggggrandson, of William Ruckman who died in Central Illinois in 1857. 1850 Census says he was born in Pennsylvania ca. 1810 married a gal named Nancy. That's as far as I've gotten. What do you think? Could we be kin? By the way I get a big kick out of your musings. Thanks

I do enjoy reading your comments and poems. I just spent a week in your beautiful co. of Pocahontas. Watoga State Park and surrounding areas. On to Canaan Valley and Blackwater Falls. The area is breathtaking in its natural beauty, and pristine in its care. W.V. truly as beautiful as any of the more popular parks. I will certainly return. I was born in Brooke Co. and now live in New Jersey. Parents from Pleasants. Look forward to reading your future pieces. Sandy

What talent! I know, in your humble hillbilly heart you will "aw, shucks" yourself out of that one, but truly, you have a real style and unique worldview! Being the sister of Linda Fluharty (genealogy maven extraordinaire), I am also a native West Virginian, though I've been transplanted to Minnesota. And believe me, it's a different world up here, Yah, You Betcha! Your essays definitely strike a chord, and I bet there are publishers galore who would love to have a crack at your work! They are every bit as witty and relevant as anything Dave Barry, Jean Shepherd, Lewis Grizzard, Garrison Keillor or Patrick McManus ever wrote. Keep it up, I've got the page bookmarked now!

This is a very nice site. Both my parents grew up in and attended SMHS. My mother Sally (Tice) Bartrug was the 1957 Bell of St.Marys. My father is Charles R. Bartrug. My parents live just across the river in Newport, Ohio where myself and my sister Rhonda and brother Mark went to school. Rhonda still lives in Newport with her husband Gale Lauer and sons, Nick and Evan. Mark lives on my mothers family farm on sugar creek with his wife Kim and sons Zach, Dustin (WV 2000 103lb state wrestling champ), Cody and Seth. Myself I live on the old Corbin farm that was my great-great-great grandfathers, with my husband Frank (Bub) Horner and sons Anthony and Michael Winland.

Greetings All,

Just wandering 'round the holler and seen pictures of Uncle Bart's place in Calcutty. Well lookee here i says - i got a mess o' kin down that way. Howdy Jake, Chuck & Louise, Betty, Marsha and Fannie Sue. If any of y'all see these folks, tell 'em I said HI. I expect to get back down that way soon enough as I recently got me a fine woman that needs to meet the family.

Now I gotta admit, I grew up Yankee - but i never did care for political boundaries much anyhow. Far as i'm concerned, we're all in this together - so we best just get along. Course that don't mean i don't keep a shotgun handy.

Well, gonna mosey for now. Thanks to all who put the effort into this great site. Now I know you're all here, I'll be sure to visit again.

Kind Regards,
Steve Ruckman

Jim, Peggy sent me this web site and I have shared it with so many and enjoyed it so much. Just sent my son, Jack, Jr., the story about the "hill". That was his favorite bar in the county. Of course, it is about the only bar in the county now. Did you know Myrt that ran that bar for so long? Jack loved her and was so devistated when she died. Keep your site going and entertain us. Earlene

He's from near Morgantown & shares many of your thoughts & humor. I am also interested that your website is maintained by Linda Cunningham Fluharty. My paternal grandmother was a Fluharty from Wetzel County, WV. Could we have some 'relativity' here??? I will look for more of your musings in the future!!
