He has reference number 102. see page 70 APR 1994 TCR, father John Ruckman, mother - Elizabeth R. page 140 OCT 1994 TCR. 1830 Ohio Co Census, Ruckman, Samuel 50-60 3 males 15-20, male 20-30, 1 females 0-5, 2 females 5-10, female 40-50 Samuel Ruckman and his wife Eleanor, first bought property in Ohio Co, VA, circa 1820. This tract, containing about 140 acres, was on the North Fork of Big Grave Creek. They sold it in 1825 and a few months later purchased another farm containing 130 acres from John Alley. This land was farther up on Fish Creek on Maggotty Camp Run, east of Lynn Camp. Samuel and Eleanor Ruckman had twelve children, six sons and six daughters. Their names were in the will of Samuel dated 10 JAN 1832. He died in the spring of 1832 as his will was probated in MAY of that year. Will 10 JAN 1832, probated MAY 1832. Gatts was the husband of Rachel E. Ruckman. According to the 1880 census this George was 11 years old at the time of the 1880 census, which would make him born Abt 1869. The George E. Gatts, who married Rachel Ruckman, was age 21 at the time of the marriage in 1881, which would make his birth, Abt. 1860 and consistant with his wife's age at the time of the marriage. +92 iii. Yeater Dies of Heart Attack at Kausooth Home Nathaniel Walker Yeater, 78, prominent retired Marshall county farmer, died suddenly Monday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lawrence Quigley with whom he made his home. He was found dead in the yard apparently the victim of a heart attack. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Quigley, with whom he made his home, Mrs. Clarice Lowe, of Milton, Ohio; three sons, Reason, of Huntington, Wiley of Jefferson avenue, Moundsville and Clem of Littleton, and two brothers, C. E. Yeater of Cameron and Oscar Yeater of Glen Easton. He was a member of the Methodist church. Funeral services will be held at the place of death Wednesday moring at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Exline, pastor of the Silver Hill charge Methodist churches. Burial will be in Big Run Cemetery. Last Will and Testament of Nathaniel W. Yeater I, Nathaniel W. Yeater, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, do make, publish and ordain this my Last Will and Testament, hereby revoking any and all Wills at any time heretofore made by me. First. Recollections: Remember Summertime visits to Grandpa Tim and Grandma Belle Yoho's Farm I would usually spend two to four weeks at Grandma Belle's, Grandpa Tim's and Uncle Okey's in the summer months. When I was at Grandma's, L. V. (son of Joe and Pearl Yoho) would usually come over and stay with me while visiting. As I look back we had great times. Grandma was a wonderful lady and not nearly as stern as Grandpa. She required us to do some chores in the house and kitchen; we fed the chickens, gatherered the eggs, fetched and milked the cows, helped separate the mild and rounded up the turkeys and the little biddies when there was a threatening rain storm. Grandpa would never let the turkeys be out in the storm because the old mother hen would sit down and let the little ones under her wings, oftentimes smothering them. Grandpa and Okey would take us to the garden, hayfield, or cornfield but as expected playing was much more fun than working. Grandpa was a "good Democrat" and always was involved in political campaigns and elections. I remember him taking me with him to register voters; I rode behind him on Nellie (Granpa's favorite riding horse) and we would go throughout the area and down each lane. He told me about the two party system and how it tollk both Democrats and Republicans for a democracy. He went on to say that each party had their best people running for office but the Democrats were superior and I should always vote a straight ticket. I have never forgotten what Grandpa said but I haven't always followed his advice. I remember when there was no electricity, no radios, no hot or cold running water, no indoor plumbing, or refrigerators. However, everyone had natural gas which was freely produced on Great Grandpa Henry's farm. For decades Grandpa Tim's farm had a bright flame that burned 24 hours a day in the side yard providing light throughout the ridge night after night. I would on occasions go to Uncle Tom's (Thomas Lindsey Yoho) and Uncle Joe's (Joseph Claude Yoho) to visit. At Uncle Tom's I would usually get a treat of some pie or a jelly sandwich from Aunt Ella (Ella Narcissis Yoho Yoho). Occasionally I would get a ride on Shannon, a big gray horse of Uncle Tom's. I remember going to their house at wheat "trash'in time" when the threshing crew would go through the community from farm to farm and the neighbors would move along to help each other. At Uncle Joe's they had the first electric lights in that neck of the woods. As I recall, this would have been in about 1930. Home electricity was made by a gasoline driven Delco generator, which was housed in a tiny building near the house. In Uncle Joe's shed, owned previously by Grandma Belle's father (Thomas Gatts), there were ... Dried tobacco leaves strung up on the walls. It had been grown, cut, cured and no doubt used for chewing and making of cigars by Grandpa Gatts. His son-in-law, Tim Yoho, regulary chewed Bloch Brothers Mail Pouch. Tim Yoho;s grandson has also been known at times to take a pinch of Mail Pouch. I remember my Dad, Albert Lee Coffield, saying that during the summers he would come home to work on his Dad's farm and in the booming gas and oil fields to earn money for his return to school in the fall. He would always end up in the evenings at Timothy Yoho's to see Sue (Susan A. Yoho Coffield). Dad would always tell about his family working as hard and fast as they could and then going to Tim Yoho's to brag about how much work the Coffields had done. He spent part of his life as a farmer, taught in rural schools, and later was an employee of the state road commission, retiring 10 years ago because of ill health. For 14 years he lived with his brother, Joe C. Yoho of Moundsville. A member of the Christian church, Mr Yoho was also affiliated with Earl Francis Post, No. 3, American Legion. Ruckman, of West Liberty, [WV], is a leading physcian and surgeon of Ohio County. He was born in Marshall County, West Virginia, August 10, 1886, and is a son of Van and Susan (Hafer) Ruckman. Dr. J.W. Ruckman attended the district schools of Marshall County and in early life engaged in teaching, after completing a course at West Liberty State Normal School. He received his teacher's certificate in 1903 and taught school until 1907. In 1910 Doctor Ruckman received his degree as Doctor of Medicine from the Cincinnati Medical College and spent the following two years as an intern in Cincinnati General Hospital. He then spent a year in practice at Captavia, West Virginia, and then purchased the practice of Doctor Duffey at Rosbys Rock, Marshall County. Eight years later he removed to West Liberty, where he has a well established practice. During the World War Doctor Ruckman was the only physician in this section of the county not in the service, and he was therefore unable to enlist. On September 15, 1921, Doctor Ruckman was united in marriage with Miss Etrulia Bernice Dixon, of West Liberty, the daughter of R.H.L. and Bernice E. (Garrison) Dixon, residents of West Liberty. Mr. and Mrs. Dixon have three children: Alva, lives at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvannia; Etrulia Bernice Ruckman; and Leola, married Paul H. Bonar, lives at Beechbottom, West Virginia. Wiley Yeater, 86 of 116 Jefferson avenue Moundsville, passed away at Reynolds Memorial hospital this Tuesday moring at 9:30, following a lengthy illness. He was born at Adaline, Marshall county, February 7, 1881, son of Nathaniel Walker and Emma Mason Yeater, and lived his entire life in this county. He was a former employee of the State Road Commission and later operated a service station in Moundsville. He was a member of Simpson Methodist church. He was a Democrat and had been active in party affairs in earlier years. Surviving are two sons, Alton P. and Carl R., both of Moundsville; one daughter Mrs. Buster (Bessie) Williams of Moundsville; and one sister Mrs. Lawrence Qugley of Glen Dale; ten grandchildren and a number of great- grandchildren. After much prodding the midwife finally declared the girl didn't know who the father was because she was asleep and it must have been immaculate conception. Mine was blue and very beat up and battered as I wore it all the time. Alton offered to buy me a brand new gray hat if I would throw away that Yankee one. I refused his offer as I would never wear a Rebel hat. Alton also named a son, Robert Lee Yeater. I believe all the stories about the Yohos being southern symphathyzers to be true. You will not find more than one or two of the Marshall County Yohos who were in the Civil War, in the Union Army. When my mother was a little girl, her mother would dress her up in the cutest little outfits, and then her Dad would take her for a walk on the town. He would stop to talk to everyone and show off his little daughter. Alton had an extensive library of books. He was very interested in all the wars and the great generals. I borrowed as many of those books as I could read as I was also interested in the American Revolution, Civil War, and WWII. Alton's son, Jeff, now has most of those books. See 1994 Yoho Newsletter On 4 DEC 1994, the Yoho family lost one of its most compassionate and sweetest members, Ruth Yoho Cozart. As a school teacher in Marshall County, West Virginia for over thirty years, she probably taught more Yohos than any other person. Ruth Yoho Cozart was born on September 28, 1910 on the family farm on Rines Ridge, Marshall County, WV. Dr. Haught of Woodland was the attending country doctor at her birth. Over the years, Ruth's first cousin, LeMoyne Coffield and his son, Robert, traveled several times to Rines Ridge to visit Ruth and her husband, Lawrence Cozart. They will certainly miss those visits which afforded an opportunity to spend time with Ruth and Lawrence--Listening to them talk about relatives, telling family stories which provided a glimpse of what it must have been like to live out on the ridge many years ago. As a storyteller, Ruth was very slow and detailed making her stories come alive and seem so real. When telling a funny story Ruth would let out a little laugh. It was a very unique laugh, as if she were embarrassed to be laughing at her own story. To arrive at the Cozart's, LeMoyne and Bob traveled from New Martinsville by Route 2, up Route 89 at Proctor, and at the forks of the road veered right and out Rines Ridge. In route they saw the former house of Roy Yoho, the old Yoho School house and the home of the late Vincent Yoho, where Vincent;s son, "Jake' and Jake's wife, Icie Cozart lived. They continued out Rines Ridge to Ruth's house, where her father and mother, Thomas L Yoho and Aunt Ella Yoho previously lived and where before them lived Henry "Speckled" Yoho (1832-1915) and his wife, Susan Elizabeth Kelley Yoho (1835-1910). Henry and Elizabeth were Ruth's paternal great-grandparents. Henry was the son of George and Rachel Garner Yoho. Ruth had two sets of Yoho great-grandparents, her maternal great- grandparents being, James and Mary Ellen Garner Yoho. Henry and Elizabeth Yoho were also the great-grandparents of LeMoyne Coffield on his mother's side of the family. Ruth and Lawrence showed LeMoyne and Bob around the house and shared some of its history and the history of Henry and Elizabeth, who built the house in the mid-1800's and lived there until their deaths in 1915 and 1910. They pointed out that the house had additions but still had the old open fire place with the old iron and copper pots swinging over the fire. Ruth and Lawrence had remodeled, but had framed the fireplace and left it, the cooking pots and kettles in place. At one time Sloan's Church (Christian), the family church, was located on the Henry Yoho farm on Rines Ridge. Later it was torn down and moved to Fairview on Birch Ridge. Ruth went to Centennial grade school and Magnolia High School in New Martinsville. She stayed with Uncle Albert Coffield and Aunt Sue Yoho Coffield while attending two years of high school. Shen then transferred to Moundsville High School where she graduated. She attended West Liberty State College and became a school teacher in Marshall and Wetzel counties. Initially, she taught in "one room schools" at Centennial; later at Mt. Hobart, Fredonia, Woco, Yoho School, Highland School and Mt. Olivet. As she grew to womanhood Ruth became a member of the Christian Church. Lawrence Cozart and Ruth Yoho were married in 1935. They raised several foster children, including Lloyd Mason, Cindy Slider, Madeline Cook and Boyd Stacey. Ruth died in the house on Rines Ridge where she was born. She lived there most of her 84 years. She was laid to rest in the Yoho Cemetery, about 100 yards from the "Old Home Place", next to Lawrence, who died in 1990, her parents and great-grandparents. And now Yeater, a 50 year-old Blue Bell resident, is getting something back. The one constant enjoyment in Yeater's life - a life marred by pain and anguish - has been the Mountaineers' football program. And when West Virginia takes on Boston College today, Yeater will be in front of his television set cheering on his alma mater. Not much keeps Yeater from following his West Virginia team. Two weeks ago, when West Virginia crushed Temple, Yeater endured perhaps the last of his pain. Complications from his diabetes necessitated the amputation of his left leg three inches below his knee. And while he recuperated at Abington Hospital, Yeater did what comes naturally to him. "I listened to the game on the radio," he said. "I've suffered so much pain in the last two years," said Yeater. "I'm just glad there's no more pain, and if I can get back to a normal life, it will have all been well worth it." What will help him recuperate even faster begins today when West Virginia plays Boston College. It's an interesting scenario since BC is coming off a huge upset over Notre Dame. By the same token, West Virginia is on the heels of its stunning victory over Miami. If West Virginia beats Boston College, and Florida somehow beats Florida State tomorrow, then Yeater said he thinks the fifth-ranked Mountaineers will play Nebraska in the Orange Bowl for the national title. "It's a big game (today)," he said, explaining that he'll be watching it on television at home. "I hope we pull this one out like the last one (against Miami)." The last time West Virginia was in a position to win a national championship was 1989 when the Mountaineers lost to Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. "They've given me a lot of enjoyment, win or lose," Yeater said. "I'll feel good about the team either way. If they win it, it will be beyond belief. It would be too much to ask for, but I think it will work out that way. I feel good about the team, and about my ability to get on my feet and be able to go." Growing up in Moundsville, near Wheeling, WV, he attended West Virginia on a football scholarship. Out of a Split-T offensive set, he was one of the two Mountaineers' starting halfbacks between 1962-64. He may be the best back the school ever had, according to Tom Woodeshick, a 1963 West Virginia graduate who went on to play 10 NFL seasons, nine with the Eagles. "He was the most touted back ever to come there," said Woodeshick, who now works in casino marketing. "It's not even close. I don't know what he possessed. He wasn't a burner. He wasn't that allusive, but no one worked harder or had a better work ethic." In 1965, Yeater was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys. He reported to training camp, but soon ripped all the cartilege in his left knee. That ended his football career. "That crushed me," he said. "All I ever wanted to do was play professional football, and when that happened, I thought it was the end of everything. I spent months after that deciding what I even wanted to do." He sat out a year, then went back to the university to finish his degree. And now, he knows exactly what he wants to do by the end of this calendar year. He intends to rehabilitate himself well enough to attend West Virginia's bowl game. "That would be great," he said. "That's what I'm shooting for. It gives me something to look forward to. I have a lot of pride in West Virginia and its football team. "There's a lot of joy and satisfaction in following and supporting them. It gives me something very positive to take my mind off my personal problems." Woodeshick, who has been in better contact with Yeater this past year than in any other, always knew him to be an optimistic fighter. "It's the athletic mentality, particularly among football players," he explained. "God bless him. I hope he continues that way. He must be a very strong-willed guy." A 1967 West Virginia graduate, Yeater works with the FMC Corp., a diversified industrial company. He's the organization's director of occupational safety and hygiene. Of Course, the irony of a health official inflicted with health problems is painfully obvious. "This has given me a greater appreciation for what I do," he said. "My job is the prevention of this kind of thing, and now it's happened to me. I have a feeling now for the hardship and the effect something like this can have on someone's life." Now, he's worried his own job will be hampered. Since he travels to various industrial plants all over the world, he wonders if he'll have as much mobility. "The people (doctors and friends) have been very encouraging," he said. When he was at West Virginia, the Mountaineers did nearly as well as this year's undefeated team. In 1962, the year he took a starting job away form senior Jim "Shorty" Moss, the team finished 8-2. A year later, West Virginia went 7-3, and in 1964, it finished 8-2 and went to the Liberty Bowl, only to lose 7-0 to Utah. In 1962, one of his most cherished memories is having scored the winning touchdown in a key game against rival Pitt. Ironically, perhaps, it was just about a month ago that Yeater was back at West Virginia for the annual Pitt game on an invitation from his life-long friend, ED Pastilong, the Mountaineers' athletic director. The visit turned into a small reunion as Pastilong also invited Woodeshick, Yeater's backfield mate when he first broke into West Virginia's starting lineup as a sophomore. Woodeshick was a senior that year. "It was almost like I held it against him because he had beaten out my buddy (Moss) who I shared the backfield with," Woodeshick said. "We were simply teammates on the field." The two recalled the 1962 game they shared against Pitt. Trailing 8-7 with a couple of minutes left, Woodeshick ran 92 yards for a touchdown, but he was called out of bounds at Pitt's 40. Then, it was Yeater's turn. "On the next five or six plays, he was unbelievable," Woodeshick recalled. "He was banging out runs of five, seven and 10 yards. I never saw a guy run as hard. You talk about determination. No guy was ever more determined. "We both excelled that game, but he did more than I because he took the ball over the goal line. I did too, but it didn't count." In Yeater's career, he also had a 92-yard touchdown run - one that counted. It came against Oregon State. Years later, his uphill battle against diabetes began. In 1981, he was first diagnosed, and each year the disease has become progressively worse. He's had several recent minor surgeries for painful vascular problems, then it culminated with the amputation. "I knew I had problems, but I didn't realize it would end this way, " Yeater said. "I saw the doctor, and it was four or five days later, and I was having the surgery." He's been at home for a 10-day recovery period, and after an appointment next week, he'll be cast for an artifical leg, and then undergo a two to four week inpatient stay at Abington to learn how to walk again. If West Virginia can win today, it might just be the foothold Yeater needs. "It'd be a big lift for me," he said. "It'd be a real source of joy because I'm a big fan." With a big heart.
