Note 2: As is customary in genealogy, women's maiden names are used in all references to them regardless of marital status.
He married Ann Arnold, married Apr 9 1793 in Frederick co, VA, b. Sep 22 1772 in probably Virginia, d. Jun 8 1816 in Wood co, VA (WV), buried in Waverly, WV. Ann: Original marriage license is in the Frederick co. VA Court. (Clerk's office) (Surety, James Strother) The marriage return says they were married in Fauquier co. on April 15 1793 by John Monroe, a Baptist minister. A Richard Arnold came to Wood co in 1799 (Black, History)
On her marriage license she signed her name "Nancy Arnold". Her gravestone has "Ann" wife of Spencer.
The request for a license to marry Spencer was
obtained April 9, 1793 in
Another possibility is that there were two ceremonies, one for each family if one was in Frederick and the other in Fauquier. This was not uncommon in those days as marriages were one of the few times families and friends got together when it was not a work party.
We
have no knowledge of why she died at age 42, but we do know she knew she was
dying and asked John to look after the younger ones at least until William was

(obit) Lewis W Justice Called By Death. For Many Years a Resident of Western
section, passed away suddenly at Mrs. Moore's hospital last Saturday, July 24,
1926, following a brief illness. About a year ago he suffered a slight
stroke, from which he seemed to have recovered. During the harvest of the
first crop of alfalfa on his farm in the Fernley district while stacking he
was accidentally hit by the derrick fork and knocked off the stack. His
vision had been greatly impaired since the stroke a year ago and it is
believed he was unable to see the fork as it came toward him.
He was brought to the hospital in Fallon on Wednesday of last week and on
Saturday he suffered a stroke which brought the end. Lew W Justice was born
in
when he moved to
the boom days. When that camp went down he came to Fallen and con____ed the
Grand Hotel for some time. About 12 years ago he moved to Fernley, taking up
land and developed a good farm. He was still engaged in this pursuit when
death came. He was married when a young man in
born to this union. His wife passed away in
in
years ago. Mr. Justice leaves to mourn the loss an aged mother, Mrs. Rebecca
Justice of Logansport, Ind., two brothers, Charles and Frank Justice and one
sister, Mrs. Grace Rice, all in
Fowler,
wherever he had lived, for he lead an honorable, upright life and always won
the respect of those with whom he associated.
When a young man he joined Delphi Lodge No
80, K of P,
retained his membership in that lodge. His home lodge ordered flowers for the
funeral and sent $100 toward the funeral expense. The funeral was held in
Fallon Tuesday afternoon under the auspice of Alpine Lodge No 24, Knights of
Pythias, the service being held at the Methodist church. A most appropriate
address and eulogy was delivered by Judge Clark J Guild, a prominent member of
the Knights of Pythias in which he brought out a great many lessons to those
who attended, as well as in a fine way paying a high tribute to the departed
brother. The ritualistic lodge service was conducted by Obie Harrell, L T
Kendrick and Homer Bowers at the church as well as at the cemetery. Two solos
were rendered by Mrs. Mel Price at the church with Mrs. F E Nichols
accompanying. There were many beautiful floral tributes from lodges and r
friends and relatives, one special piece bearing the word "Father." There was
quite a large attendance, many friends being here from Fernley as well as old
friends from this locality. At the time of his death he had reached the age of
64 years, 7 months and 27 days. Lew Justice was a good man, and his upright
life is an incentive to others to strive to live ____to the Golden Rule. He
lived the noble principles of the order to which he belonged and was ever
found striving to keep its emblems unsullied before the world. He married (1) Florence Adaline Wilson, married Oct 5 1887 in Carroll co, IN, b. Feb 2 1864 in Carroll co, IN, d. "Very little is know about these units.
They were usually assigned to guard railroads and town, scout for the regulars,
or chase the Confederate partisans who were constantly attacking the Northern
counties in small bands. Much acrimony and internecine warfare resulted from
the bitter confrontation between locals supporting one side or another. Many
civilians were arrested by both sides under questionable authority. Those who
served in the Militia (Home Guard) units were not entitled to Federal Pension,
nor were they awarded the West Virginia Civil War medals. However, many were
killed, wounded and prisoners of war." (

(headline) JAMES SHARP DECLINES
To be a Candidate for the House of Deligates. (September 4, 1894)
Editor Sentinel: - As my name has been frequently mentioned in your paper, as a probable candidate for the House of Delegates, I feel it my duty to inform my friends that I cannot consent to be a candidate for that or my other office, for many reasons. I have neither time nor money to spend in politics, and if elected would probably be a kicker. As I could not vote for either a millionaire or a political demigog (sic) for United States Senator. I am in favor of absolute free trade as soon as it is possible to attain it, without seriously affecting the business of the country or hampering the government. Believing as I do that we will never be a free and prosperous people until we have absolute free trade with all the world. I am in favor of free silver. Every thing free but whiskey and tobacco. I believe bonded ware houses for whiskey should be abolished and tax the capacity of every still that is run, and make the tax payable every month. I feel that it is the duty of every voter and tax payer to require a pledge from every candidate for a seat in either branch of our State Legislature, that they will use all their talent and influence to correct some of the wrongs we are suffering from here in our own State, in Wood and all other wealthy counties. The tax payers are annually robbed of thousands of dollars by our system of paying our county officers. Notably those of Sheriff and clerk of the County Court. Offices paying their holders as those offices do here in this county not only robs the tax payers but breeds political corruption. It is hard enough for us to pay necessary taxes without starving ourselves and families to make a few of our citizens rich. J.P. Sharp (Newspaper letter to Editor)

into one of sorrow and sadness at the dedication of the new Bethel Presbyterian
Church near Ogdin, on Sunday, by the sudden and unexpected death of Mrs. John
C. Sharp (this is clearly an error which the authors have checked with several sources;
she is Mrs. James Prince Sharp) at the morning services, whose death was
pronounced to be due to heart failure. The church was filled to its capacity
by the members and many friends, including many of the friends of the church
in former days, who had gathered there to attend the services of the day.
Many from this city were in attendance and it was in the nature of a home
coming for the latter. The opening services, it might be said, had just been
commenced. The organ had pealed forth the opening prelude, the call to
worship had been made, the doxology had been sung and the congregation was in
the midst of singing the opening hymn, "All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name,"
when the sad incident occurred.
Mrs. Sharp had had an attack early in the morning, but had rallied from it
to such an extent that she insisted that she felt well enough to go to the
church. She had been looking forward to the dedicatory services with more
than ordinary interest and it would have been a great disappointment if she
had been compelled to forego attending them. Being a good singer she
naturally entered into the singing of the hymn mentioned above, and the second
verse was being sung when those who were sitting in the same pew noticed her
fall over, apparently in a faint.
Tender hands at once carried her from the church and it is supposed that she
had expired before they had taken her out in the open air, as an immediate
examination by two physicians who were present, revealed the fact that life
was extinct.
The peculiar feature in connection with the incident was that Mr. Sharp, who
was sitting a few pews in front of his wife, was not aware of what had taken
place until the sad message was carried back into the church to him that Mrs.
Sharp was dead.
He was naturally very much shocked and accompanied by friends, left the
church and arrangements were at once made for removing the remains of his wife
to the family home. While the arrangements were being made the congregation
in the church sang the familiar hymn, "Jesus Lover of My Soul."
The deceased, who was about fifty-five years old, is survived by her husband
and one daughter, fourteen years old. She was an earnest church worker and a
devout Christian and her demise makes a sad loss to that community. The
family was one of the most prominent in Grant district, and in upper section
of Wood county.
Mr. Sharp, the husband of the deceased, is one of the elders of the church,
in which the sad event happened, and was also a member of the building
committee that charge of the building of the new church which was dedicated.
The incident caused great excitement, several ladies of the congregation
fainting, and sobs arose from all sections of the edifice.

The musket has been handed down through male members of the family for generations. Jake and Forrest both remembered it being used to kill hogs on the farm. The musket was examined by a dealer in black powdered weapons and said that the musket appeared to have been assembled from common parts from various manufacturers of the 1830's. The barrel of the musket had been shortened a foot some time during it's history. Jake told David that some one accidentally double charged it and it blew up at the breach. (obit) William Edward Compton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Dana Compton, was born near Williamstown, Wood co. June 15 1881 and died in Parkersburg Nov 20 1915. He
was of pioneer ancestry, being a descendant of the Comptons and Sharps, of
Virginia, and the Dana's of Washington co. OH. Mr. Compton was married on June
18, 1908 to Miss Elizabeth E Henderson of Williamstown, They established a
home in the dwelling place of his grandparents, and here, on July 31, 1909,
was born to them a daughter, Mary Elizabeth. The passing of Mr. Compton from
this life in the full prime of manhood falls as a heavy affliction upon his
wife and young daughter, his aged parents, his brothers and sister, and is
deeply felt by many friends and associates, with whom he was deservedly
popular. He was a man of kind and amiable disposition, hospitable and
generous to a degree, a good friend and neighbor. As a husband and father, he
was always devoted and loving, finding his chief delight in the companionship
of his family and in efforts put forth for their benefit. To his parents he
was a mainstay, looking daily after their welfare. He had been a sufferer
from acute rheumatism and later developed an organic trouble of the heart,
which caused his death. His sufferings were borne with patience and fortitude, and his path down the dark valley soothed by trust in God. Therefore do his loved ones, though deep bereft, find solace in many precious memories and inspired by hope of a reunion where parting shall be no more. (obit) With regret we inform our readers of the death of Mr. George Sharp of our county. On Tuesday morning last he took his final leave of earth and friends, to enjoy, we have reason to hope, a better world. He had lived over his four-score years, though his departure is a sore affliction to his friends;
yea, to all who knew him.

years of age and had been ailing for some time.
Dad (Arch B. Hammett, Jr.) told me the story of the Union coming to the Sharp house with the intention of drafting the men. The men hid in a barn and Grandma Sharp (Drusilla Jamison Sharp) stuffed clothes to look like a Southern soldier and stood it at the top of the stairs. The Union soldiers shot the dummy up pretty badly, then told her they didn't come to be harassed to which she replied that she didn't ask them to. Maybe they got drafted anyway.
Don't know more that that Dad told it -- but it makes a good story. Dad wasn't prone to making them up though. (Note by Kathryn Hammett Gordon).
A. William Thomas Sharp, b. Nov 27 1826 in Wood co, VA (WV), d. Mar 9 1890 in Pleasants co, WV, buried in St John's cem, near Willow Island, WV. Adopted Lottie Sharp.
In 1858 William T Sharp was a trustee of the MP Church; in 1860 he was a clerk
and in 1870 a merchant. The St. Marys Oracle, Mar 2 1882 printed that William
Sharp is the Postmaster at Willow Island. He was postmaster from Jul 24 1879 to Feb 16 1882.
"At the mouth of Cow creek they have a postoffice named Willow Island, a store, two churches, and a school house. The postmaster is William T. Sharp . . . ." (Hardesty)
Purchased land from Daniel Powell on Oct 1 1852.
(Obit) Mr. Wm Sharp, an old and respected citizen of this county, died at his home at Willow Island P.O. (post office), in this county on last Sunday. Mr. Sharp had suffered from the effects of a paralytic stroke for many years and which finally caused his death. H was interred at the White Church on Cow Creek on Monday of this week. (Undated newspaper article). He married Malisa A "Mitt" Irwin, married Mar 24 1866 in Pleasants co, WV by W.L. Hyland, b. Mar 22 1839 in Waverly, VA (WV), (daughter of William Irwin and Euphemia Murray) d. May 15 1914, buried in Oak Grove cem, Marietta, OH. Malisa: No children.
B. Ann Elizabeth Sharp, b. Aug 14 1828 in Wood co, VA (WV), d. Sep 14 1912 in Pleasants co, WV, buried in IOOF cem, St Marys, WV.
Mrs. William Kester (Ann Elizabeth Sharp) had for her
guests on Monday her sisters, Mrs. S. G. Hammett (Mary
Drusilla Sharp) and Mrs. M. E. Tate (Margaret
Ellen Sharp) of Mt. Olive, and five cousins, namely Mrs. Wm.
Ingraham and Mrs. Bertha Crouse of Waverly, Mrs. Stephen
Compton of Compton (sic), Mrs. Jane McKinney of Parkersburg, and Mrs. Joseph
Higginbothan of Letart, Ohio. The ages of these cousins
ranged from 58 to 83 years, and as it was deemed a rare
coincidence to have so many together at their advanced ages.
The photographer, Austin Williamson, was called in and
photographed the octette. To say the day was enjoyed by all
who were present would be putting it mildly. (Newspaper clipping)
(obit) It becomes my sad duty to chronicle the death of
one more of our beloved members, Sister Ann Elizabeth Kester
departed this life Sep 14, 1912 at the ripe age of 84 years.
Born in Wood County, WV, she was the daughter of George and
Druzilla Sharp; was united in marriage with Wm. Kester
January 25 1849. This bond of unions was broken less than
one year ago, when he answered the call of the heavenly
messenger and, as we said at that time, she was just waiting
on the banks of the river, she has now crossed over to join
him in that land where there are no unbroken ties. She
professed faith in Christ and united with the church in the
year 1850. She was many years a pious and exemplary member
of the Methodist Protestant Church, and that religion which
adorned her character and smoothed and lightened up her
pathway through life imparted indescribable consolation in
her sick and dying chamber, for her faith in God was firm
and unwavering. She leaves to mourn their loss her noble
sons and daughter and a host of relatives and friends.
The usual services were conducted at the family home at
Belmont by the pastor.
. She married William Kester, married Jan 25 1849 in Wood co, VA (WV) by D.A. McGinnis, b. May 9 1824 in Harrison co, VA, (son of Adam Kester and Sarah Devol) d. Oct 22 1911, buried in IOOF cem, St Marys, WV. William: William Kester, one of the commissioners of Pleasants county was born May 19, 1824 in Harrison county, his parents being Adam and Sarah (Devall) Kester. The parents were natives of Maryland, but came to West Virginia about 1819. The father remained in Harrison County until about 1830, and then removed to Pleasants, where he rented land for ten years, and then bought 100 acres, on which he made his home until his death. He served as a soldier during the war of 1812. The subject of our sketch was reared on a farm and received the ordinary common school education. January 25, 1849, he was united in marriage to Ann E, daughter of G. A. and Druzilla W. (Jamison) Sharp. This union resulted in the birth of ten children... The mother was born in this county in 1828, and she and husband are members of the Methodist Protestant church, of which he acts as a trustee. He has served many years on the school board of his district, and was assessor of Pleasants county for four years. In 1883 he was appointed commissioner of Pleasants to fill in a vacancy occasioned by the resignation of J. R. Seckman, and in the fall of 1884 he was elected to the same position, which he has held since that time. He has made a good and efficient officer, and has conducted the public business so as to obtain the approbation of his constituents. Although he began life without property, he has succeeded quite well by the exercise of industry and economy. He now owns over 237 acres of good land, which is in good condition. He is a prominent democratic leader of the county, and has always been a fearless advocate of the principles of his party. He also ranks as a representative farmer of the county, and is one of its useful citizens. (History of the Upper Ohio Valley, Vol. I; Brant & Fuller, 1891)
(obit) William Kester of Belmont, WV died 22 Oct 1911, born 9 May 1824, 87

living: Thomas S of Waverly; Rufus of Grandview, Washington co; Ella Locke of

Sophia of Belmont.
"Will Kester had been very fortunate in the years of oil exploration in the
area." (Note by Nina Hammett)
County commissioner in 1889
(obit) William Kester--The friends and relatives of William Kester, of
Belmont, WVa received a great shock Sabbath morning, October 22, 1911, when
the news went out to all that he had fallen asleep in Jesus. That shock has
settled into a deep and profound sorrow as we come to a full realization of
the great loss we have sustained. Is it not words of love? For he was
beloved by all who knew him. He is gone, and our words are futile to him, for
he has solved the mysteries of life and death, and is beyond the reach of our
words. We cannot contribute to his happiness or glory, nor can we, by most
affectionate thoughts or tenderest words provoke the faintest recognition from
him. He has gone from our midst to mingle with the things eternal, while the
cycles of an endless day roll on and on, and as he, by taking thought, cannot
add to the stature of manhood that he for himself carved out of the long life
he was given to live. We pay honor, therefore, to his memory with no thought
save that of paying honor where honor is due. Father Kester was faithful
in his duties to his country, to God, to his neighbor and to himself. As a
citizen he was law-abiding; he worked for the advancement of good, clean
government; was not easily swayed by fleeting popular opinion from the right
as he saw it. As a friend and neighbor he was honest, loyal and true. He
trusted others and he could be trusted. As a Christian, he professed faith in
Christ about 62 years ago. He had an abiding faith in the wisdom, justice,
love and mercy of his Creator, and in his life he endeavored to exemplify the
golden rule, "Do unto others as ye would have them do unto you." He was a
loyal member of the Methodist Protestant Church. But he has gone from us. A
grave marks the resting place of the body; the spirit returned to the God who
gave it. Our loss is that of a good citizen, kind neighbor and faithful
member of the church. A venerable man of God, it may be said of him as one of
old, "He was a friend of God." With David of old, the sweet singer of Israel,
"Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel and afterward receive me into glory."
He was born May 9, 1824, dying aged 87 years 5 months and 13 days. "Thou
shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in its
season." He was united in marriage with Anna E Sharp, January 25, 1849. God
bless her as she stands patiently waiting on the banks of the Jordan since he
has crossed over. There were born to this union ten children, nine of whom
are still living, namely: Thos. S Kester, of Waverly; Rufus Kester, of
Grandview, Washington; Mrs. Ella Locke, of Eureka; Mrs. Bessie Harper, of
Spencer; John B, James B, Charles H, Minerva and Sophia Kester, of Belmont.
Their lives are such as to fulfill the scriptural injunction, "Honor thy
father and thy mother." Is this not one of the supreme joys in the evening of
a parent's life? "A good child maketh glad the heart of father and mother."
Josiah Payne, Pastor.

2. Minerva J "Debs" Kester, b. Jul 3 1853 in French Creek, Pleasants co VA (WV), d. Oct 23 1939 in Pleasants co, WV, buried in IOOF cem, St Marys, WV.
I remember Deb Kester as a very quiet lady who baked lemon cookies (made with ammonia) through which you could suck the lemony/ammonia air. She always had some for the children who visited, and I am sure they make excuses to call on Deb. Later I began to notice that when there were family get-to-gethers in the parlor, Deb would sit quietly back in a corner, never entering the conversation. She was usually in the kitchen or busy with the housework. As far as the family was concerned, "she was nobody." Conversation when visiting the family was almost limited to Sophia Kester and Aunt Ellen (Sharp) Tate, (when she lived there--Aunt Ellen died there). Brother Charlie never said anything. Sophia was a school teacher and accustomed to being the leader.
When I grew older I began to piece together the stories of the family and learned that Deb had been in love with a local man named Johnson Janes. She became pregnant, and although they wanted to get married, her father, Will Kester, would not let the man near and housed Deb in the wash house. (I found in Pleasant County Marriage Records where Johnson James had married another woman a year or so later.) When the baby arrived, the birth was recorded in the Pleasants County Birth Record Book by Will Kester, grandfather. The baby was immediately taken by the family and reared as another child of Will and Ann (Sharp) Kester. Bessie Kester, this child, grew to be a lovely lady, married Judge Jake Harper, and lived the rest of her life in Spencer, Roane County, WV.
I was recently told by one of the Harper relatives that they had always heard that Bessie was the daughter of Sophia Kester, a sister of Deb who spent her last years in Spencer with Bessie. The will of Minerva "Deb" Kester proves otherwise. In one obituary of Minerva Kester, Bessie is not mentioned; the other obit names her as a sister. The will of Minerva Kester relates the truth when she names "my daughter, Bessie Kester Harper of Spencer, WV if she is then living, but if she is not living, it shall be equally divided between her two daughters Camille and Frances Harper."
I remember things about the living room -- there was a clock with wooden works and operated by wooden weights that drove the mechanism. Also there were two music boxes - one spring operated; the other with a different wind-up mechanism. A kaleidoscope which gave views in depth because of the two pictures you could see in it. Chairs formed a circle in the front of the fireplace in the parlor. Aunt Ellen Tate lived in the living room which had been made into a bedroom. This room was on the left front side of the house. In the summertime most of the cooking was done in the wash house. The house still stands overlooking the highway, but this beautiful home is now in a sad state or repair. Kesters also owned the Methodist parsonage which was adjacent to "Kester's field." In later years this field would be used by the circus when it came to town. On the farm, between the field and French Creek was a swamp area which flooded during the spring rains. When the river receded, water was locked there with a large supply of fish -- carp, catfish, and some bass. Local anglers with pitchforks supplied their dinner tables with the fish. The largest fish I remember was an 85 pound carp caught by Howard Williamson. Another value of the swamp was it provided a safe place for the young boys to learn to swim. The neighborhood gathered at the swamp and the OxBow for ice skating and the game of shinny in the winter.
Relating a conversation between Frances Harper and Pearl Hammett at the funeral of Minerva (Deb) Kester as told to Pearl's daughter, Evangiline (Fauss) Ingram: When Aunt Deb died, my father (Judge Jacob Harper) called my sister Camille and me into his den , closed the door, and told us we would not be going to our Aunt Deb's funeral, but would be going to our grandmother's funeral. This gave me cause to think and remember the times when we were children and would go to Belmont to visit the Kester home, everyone hugged and kissed us but hugs from Aunt Deb were always a little more sincere and special. She always had fresh baked cookies for us. I can understand now the feeling I had for her at the time. (Remembrances of Arch B. Hammett, Jr., 1995)

C. Jane Amanda Sharp, b. Oct 11 1836 in Wood co, VA (WV), d. Apr 21 1864 in Pleasants co, WV, buried in Old St Marys cem, St Marys, WV.
My great-grandmother was Jane Sharp, daughter of Drusilla (also spelled Druzilla) Jamison and George Sharp. She married Henry Harrison Rymer, a tanner by trade according to my information. They had four children. My grandmother Ida was the eldest. Harrison Rymer died in 1860 from tuberculosis I believe, leaving Jane Sharp a widow with two small children and another on the way. She returned home to live with her parents. William, who was born after his father's death, died when only twelve days old. Jane Sharp Rymer died in 1864, leaving my grandmother Ida an orphan with no siblings, when she was only eight years old. (Most all of these deaths were caused by tuberculosis as far as I know.) Jane and Harrison Rymer and the
three little boys are interred in the IOOF cemetery. at St. Mary's. My grandmother was raised by her aunt, Margaret Ellen Sharp, who was always known in the family as Aunt Ellen. She has married rather late at age 51, to William Tate, who was a widower, I believe. George and Drusilla Sharp, my grandmother's
grandparents may also have had a hand in raising her. Hence my grandmother
always maintained close ties with the Sharp family. My mother and her
siblings often mentioned the Sharps while I was growing up. (Note by Robert Cunningham 7/95)
. She married Henry Harrison "Harry" Rymer, married 1854, b. Mar 29 1830 in Pendleton co, VA (WV), (son of William B Rymer and Jane Beverage) d. months, 4 days. Parents William B and Jane Beverage Rymer, born Pendleton co,

Birthday Honored-- Mrs. W. P. MacTaggart was honored Sunday
at her home on Willow Island when an elaborate dinner was given honoring her
birthday anniversary. A profusion of fall flowers made an attractive decoration
for the room. The dinner, served a la cafeteria was presided over in a
gracious manner by Miss Maude MacTaggart assisted by her sister, Mrs. Ralph A.
Smith, the birthday cake being dispensed by Miss Viola Ruckman. The guest list
included: Mr. & Mrs. B. W. Feeney, son Ernest and daughter Sadie; Mr. J. W. Ruckman and
sister, Miss Bea, of Pittsburgh; Mr. & Mrs. G. C. MacTaggart; Mr. John
MacTaggart, Miss Viola Ruckman of Eureka; Rev. Hardesty and son and William Kelley of
Belmont; Mr. & Mrs. Frank McTaggart and Miss Alberta Henderson of Williamstown; Mr. &
Mrs. W. E. White and daughter, Betty of Parkersburg; Mrs. W. F. Day and son Glen;
Mr. & Mrs. J. S. McAtee and daughters, Patricia and Colleen; Mr. & Mrs. Ralph A.
Smith and son, Daniel, of Flushing, Ohio; Mr. & Mrs. W. P. MacTaggart and daughter,
Miss Maude McTaggart.
Upon reading the above account of the birthday
party, it dawned on me that this would have been her birthday on October 20,
1929. I can deduce from the list of my first cousins who were present,
including Colleen McAtee but not her brother James. Nor was I present.
Colleen was born in Nov 1928 and I in March 1929, Colleen would have been eleven
months old at the time of the party. My mother and I were not present because
she had serious surgery just after I was born for the removal of two large
abdominal fibroid tumors, and was very ill and weak for months thereafter.
In fact, her oldest sister, my aunt Grace White, took care of me until I was
nine months old, as mother was too weak to do so. She would have still been
recovering at the time of this party. (Note by Robert Cunningham)
On last Wednesday evening at the residence of the bride's
uncle, S. J. Sharp, Miss Ida V. Rymer and William P. McTaggart were united in the
holy bonds of matrimony. Rev. J. M. Conaway performed the ceremony in his usual
solemn and impressive manner. Both parties are well and favorably known to
many of your readers. After the ceremony and many hearty congratulations, we
repaired to the dining room and partook of a supper of which any one might be
proud. A reception was given the next day at the residence of Hugh McTaggart.
Here we found a bountiful repast, to which we did ample justice. Thus ended
an event which will long be remembered by those who were present. The bride
received some very nice presents. Oh, how we do miss you, Ida. (Newspaper clipping, Nov. 14, 1883)
The fiftieth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. MacTaggart was celebrated at
their home at Willow (Island), Sunday, Nov 12, 1933. Owing to the illness of
Mrs. W.P. MacTaggart, only the members of the family were present except Mrs. R A
Smithe and family of Flushing, Ohio. Mr. Smith being unable to attend on
account of illness. The wedding cake was presented by Mrs. H. S. Cunningham of
Parkersburg. Mr. and Mrs. MacTaggart received many gifts and remembrances. At
noon a delicious dinner was served to the following: Mr. and Mrs. W. P.
MacTaggart, Miss Maude, Mrs. W. F. Day and son, Glen, Mr. and Mrs. G C
MacTaggart and (sister) Miss Viola Ruckman of Eureka, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. White and
daughter Betty of Parkersburg, Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Cunningham and son Robert of
Parkersburg, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. McAtee and children Patty, Colleen and James of
Parkersburg, and Miss Vivian Pratt of Reedsville, Ohio The following poem was dedicated to Mr. and Mrs. MacTaggart on the above occasion.
On the fair banks of the "Ohio"
Stands a cottage dear to me,
Just as long as memory lingers
Happy faces there I'll see.
Many years ago, father
Built his home with loving care,
And mother worked beside him,
All his grief and joys did share.
When they moved into their cottage
'Twas the "Springtime" of their life.
Father with seven children
And his happy sweet wife.
There they've toiled and planned
and suffered;
Dreams have failed, plans gone away.
Now before they realize it,
Life's winter time is drawing nigh.
Years have flown by, Oh how swiftly
Children to their homes have gone;
Father, mother, now gray headed
Are left waiting there alone.
Waiting on the banks of "Ohio";
I can see them old and lone;
