John F. Basnett, Company K, 6th WV Cavalry, was a descendant of Samuel and Catherine Shively Basnett of Marion County, WV. SOME DESCENDANTS OF SAMUEL BASNETT FIRST GENERATION 1. Samuel Basnett was born in Nov 1777 (or 1782) in Delaware. He died on 6 Jul 1852 in Basnettville, Marion Co., WV. He was buried in St. John's Methodist Church Cemetery, Basnettville, Marion Co., WV. From a History of Marion County, West Virginia, 1985: "Samuel Basnett was the first of that clan to be located in what is now Marion County. He was born 1782 in Delaware and his wife was born in Virginia. They settled, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, at what is now Basnettville, where they reared their children and spent the remaining part of their lives on their land. During Samuel's lifetime, he owned the land that is now Fairview and, in 1823, Samuel donated a certain tract of land for the St. John's Methodist Church and Cemetery. Both Samuel and Catherine are buried there. "It appears the Basnett clan in America started with the migration of a Ralph Basnett and his wife Mary, around 1740. One son, Samuel Basnett I, was born to Ralph and Mary in the middle 1700s in Sussex County, Delaware. Samuel I died in the summer of 1789 and Sarah in 1790. Both are buried in Sussex County, Delaware. They were the parents of Nehemiah, Boaz, Samuel, and John." (Written by Howard S. Charlton) ==================================================================== The following information was sent by CAROL JONES, granny@capecod.net ....the wills of the parents of Samuel Basnett and Sarah Smith Basnett, the parents of Nehemiah, Boaz, SAMUEL [II] and John. Samuel and John were brought to Monongalia by William Willey Sr. and his wife Ann Smith Willey [Sarah's sister] . Very soon Boaz and Nehemiah's daughter Sarah followed and settled in Monongalia. By the Way Samuel [I] was a blacksmith in Cedar Creek, Sussex Delaware. I believe that he is the son of Mary and Ralph Bassnett but I don't have the proof yet. Ann, Sarah, Elizabeth, Mary, Nehemiah and John are all the children of Bridget Tilney and John Smith [no fun even for a Jones to track a John Smith] . The real problem is tracing families back in the 1750 in Delaware and Maryland because nobody was quite sure where the boundary was so you have to go in both directions. You will see in some listings that Sarah was born in Maryland she wasn't she was born in Nanticoke Hundred in Sussex sorry but I don't have the date yet, but there are several land deeds that support the family connection.
