My Dear Mr. Pugh: I am sending you the monthly report and the names of those children in the district. I have noticed when I received my last month's warrant that you had it dated the 19th. When you and Mr. Snodgrass were down I asked if I kept school, during the Teacher's convention, if it would make up the time I lost at Christmas during the examination. Did I understand you wrong by where you said it would make that time up. I kept school during those days and that you meant that those two days were given to us as did several other boards that I know of. CLOEE'S ALIVE, AND REAL MAD by Pat McGraw, Denver Post Staff Writer Cloee Snodgrass wants President Reagan's help to convince the U.S. Office of Personnel Management she isn't dead. Mrs. Snodgrass has been telling them for months--over the phone and through the mail--she isn't deceased. Instead she is "just mad as hell." In a telephone interview Sunday, the 66-year-old Fort Collins woman said she was first informed of her "death" last February when a letter from the government agency to "Heirs of Cloee Dean Snodgrass" reported that a widow's pension check had been mailed after her death. The form letter asked Mrs. Snodgrass's survivors to "Please furnish the date of death and return all checks received thereafter." In a letter to President Reagan which Mrs. Snodgrass mailed Saturday night, she listed the long-distance calls she has made to Washington from her home in Fort Collins "to get this straightened out and tell them I am not dead and need those checks, but have been unable to get it across to them that I am not dead. "I am not getting my checks, either. The only results from all this is a telephone bill and no checks... "Mr. Reagan, I am not dead (and) where and how this government came by this opinion I do not know." In a more conciliatory vein, Mrs. Snodgrass wrote the president, "You need the backing of every live person who believes in what you are trying to do for our country and I would like to be alive to help, not written off as dead." She said she continues to receive, $372 a month from the state on a disability pension and $193 from the Social Security Administration, so apparently not all government agencies think she has departed this world. Neither has Colorado State University, which has accepted her for enrollment to continue the art and weaving study she began at the Community College of Denver, Red Rocks campus, when she lived in Golden. She said she hopes to earn a degree and perhaps open a small shop eventually. The money from the Office of Personnel Management, $158.05 a month, already is budgeted for tuition, and without that she probably can't afford to go to school, she said. Mrs. Snodgrass said she began receiving the money after her husband, Harry, a civilian employee of the Army Corps of Engineers, died in 1956. The widow's benefit came regularly until last January, but she said she figured that month's check was delayed because of the annual Christmas-time postal pileup. The January check never did come, she said, but she got the February payment, followed a few days later by the request for its return. Since then she has been trying to convince the government she is still with us. Last month she asked U.S. Rep. Hank Brown, R-Colo., to check it out, but without any results so far. A spokesman for Brown said Sunday the matter will be investigated further. ####################################### BOULDER COUNTY CO CENSUS RECORDS 1920 soundex - yes **************************************** RECORDS 1920 Boulder Co CO Census/Soundex 3-33-2-7: Virgel H. Since Winter Park announced plans to double its ski terrain earlier this year, Crested Butte [Gunnison Co.] has jumped on the band-wagon with a construction announcement of similar magnitude. The Mount Crested Butte resort recently approved a master plan for development of base facilities, condominiums, townhomes, a major hotel and restaurants on a 140-acre site adjoining its existing ski village. To encourage new construction of at least 1,900 condominiums and a 300-room hotel, town planners are ready to break ground on undeveloped Snodgrass Mountain, located opposite the existing ski mountain. It will be connected to the main chairlift system with a new lift designed to run above the base village. Announcement of new construction plans came days before the town's new $65 million, 263-room Grand Butte Hotel opened for business. The new portion of Mount Crested Butte's base village has been in planning stages for two years and will include a 200,000-square-foot outdoor mall built to strict covenant requirements. The new ski mountain will have 400 acres of intermediate and expert trails and will give the resort a capacity of 11,000 skiers per day, almost double its current size. Developers of the proposed base village at the foot of Snodgrass Mountain will build under strict design covenants that monitor exterior materials, height restrictions and preservation of open space. Residential units will be limited to 13 per acre. Grand plans also allow for construction of a 350-room hotel in the new village and a system of 11 new chairlifts on Snodgrass Mountain, said Mount Crested Butte planning director Paul O'Connor. He questioned the projected $25 million cost of developing new ski trails, however, saying: "I think $24 million could be spent on snow-making alone." The cost of competition has led to a new announcement of another $11 million expansion of the nearby Gunnison airport. Now jet-capable and served by American Airlines, the airport has received a multimillion-dollar shot in the arm during the past two years. That expansion has Crested Butte anticipating a 30 percent increase in skier visits this year. That hope, O'Connor said, "has everyone sitting on the edge of their chairs." If tourism increases according to plan, construction on the new ski mountain would begin next summer <1986>, said Gus Larkin, vice president of Crested Butte Mountain Resort Inc. ###################################### HUERFANO COUNTY CO CENSUS RECORDS 1900 census - yes 1920 soundex - yes ************************************** RECORDS 1900 Huerfano Co CO Census Pct. 17, Picton, 10-143-26(21?)-78: Geo. Snodgrass Passed Away After Short Illness-- Still Read Easily Without Glasses Up to Time of Death. Mrs. Elizabeth M. (Timmons) Snodgrass, mother of M. C. Snodgrass, superintendent of the Lincoln County Poor Farm, at Clifford [vss - Lincoln Co CO], died at the home of her son Tuesday morning at 7 o'clock. She had been ill but a few days with pneumonia. Mrs. Snodgrass was probably the oldest woman in Lincoln county and was in her ninetieth year. Deceased was born in Jasper Co., IN, 18 May 1842, and was 89 years 8 months and 21 days old. On 27 Sep 1864 she was married to George W. Snodgrass at Rensselaer, IN. They came to Kansas in 1880 in a covered wagon from Indiana. Her husband passed away in November, 1911. She came to Lincoln county with her son in Apr 1919 from Little River [vss - Rice Co], Kansas, and located in the Liberty Bell section. Recently the Snodgrass family moved to Hugo and then to Clifford. Her late husband was a Civil War veteran and was in many of the skirmishes of the rebellion. Mrs. Snodgrass enjoyed comparatively good health all her life. She was a member of the Methodist church from early womanhood. She read the Bible thru and only finished reading it a few days before Christmas of last year and this was done without the use of glasses, something very unusual for one so advanced in years. Besides her son, M. C. [vss - Minor C.], she is survived by another son, C. S. Snodgrass [Charles Sherman], Wenatche, Washington, and one brother, W. E. Timmons, Elk Falls, KS; 16 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. A daughter, Mrs. Ida Kiser died a year ago this month. Two brothers and two sisters are also deceased. Funeral services were conducted from the Jones Mortuary Wednesday Afternoon, Prof. J. C. Unger officiating. Misses Helen Sproul, June Lieber, Lorene Terrell, and Louise Hines sang beautifully with Prof. Dana at the piano. The remains were shipped to Little River, KS, on Wednesday's train for burial. Mr. Snodgrass accompanied the body east. The Plainsman joins with the many friends of the Snodgrass family in extending sympathy to them in the passing of this beloved woman and pioneer citizen. ---------------------------- 1987 -- Hist. of Lincoln Co., CO, page 222: Ralph and Oleta Yoder are the parents of three children, all born in Lincoln Co. Soc.--1982) ******************************* RECORDS 1982 -- Hist. of Sedgewick Co., vol. 1, page 46: The Methodist Episcopal Church was organized 11 Jul 1897, meeting in the East Lincoln Schoolhouse. Among early families represented was the Snodgrass family. - - - - - - - - - - vol. 2, pages 7 & 8: One day a large man drove in to apply for the school. His name was Snodgrass, and he lived near the river bank about a mile west of Ovid, which was not thought of then. He could not qualify as a music teacher, but seeing our mower and rake caused him to talk about hay. His place had several acres of good hay, and his nearest neighbor to the east also had a good hayfield and no machinery to get it harvested. Since our machinery had no hay to cut, the thought of school was given up and the conversation turned to hay. It ended up with a verbal contract that he and his neighbor would use the mower and rake and let us have two loads of hay each three days the machinery was used, so that was where we went for hay that year. It was a drive of about 13 miles, and with two teams and a wagon borrowed from Mr. McWilliams, we tried to bring two loads each time we went, but something can always happen, and it did on the first trip. When the first load was loaded it was ready to drive out on firm ground, as much of the hay ground was soft with alkali. In going through one wet place, one wheel went down in an alkali spot and turned the course of the wagon against a lump of dirt and the load was stuck. In trying to get a team ahead to help pull, the wagon tongue broke so we went home the first day with only one load. The next day Father spent trying to find a wagon tongue to use, but found none. After trying still more later, he bought some bolts and 2x4's and put the old tongue together and by pitching most of the load off, it was possible for two horses to pull the wagon out of the place where it was stuck. Then we made several trips getting two loads each time. There was hardly enough hay to make safe feeding through the winter, and after the hay was all hauled according to the contract, Mr. Snodgrass wanted a cow for his family, as his three children needed milk the same as others, and he had a stack of hay that he could spare, so Father sold him a cow and took a stack of hay as pay, and all parties concerned were satisfied, unless it may have been the horses that had to haul the hay. At that time the problem of the school was not settled for 68, but Mr. Snodgrass had a school to teach, in his own district, so he was situated better than he would have been if 68 had hired him. ###################################### TELLER COUNTY CO CENSUS RECORDS 1900 census - yes ***************************************** RECORDS 1900 Teller Co CO Census Cripple Creek, 17-126-27-73: Laura Snodgrass 25-F-IN/IN/IN Feb 1875 stenographer Mae Sprague 12-F-Ind.Terr. Nora was accompanied by her husband Roy Dack and two daus., Mildred age 5 and Lauretta age 2. They bought relinquishments on the Northeast quarter of section 2, township 8, range 56, and lots 7 and 8 Northwest quarter. They lived in the wagon's over-jets until a two-room frame house was built. Each night before going to bed, Nora shook out all the bedding and swept the area of their temporary home to make sure no rattlesnakes were settling in with them. Three sons were born on the homestead: Jim in 1917, Virgil in 1920, and Jack in 1926. Grace and her husband, Clint Snodgrass, their children, Leonard age 12, Viola age 3, and Dora age 2, took a homestead along the Rocky Ridge seven miles southeast of the Dacks. They built a small sod house near a natural spring. Both families raised and canned their vegetable and meet, which they stored in the cellar. The women churned butter and baked bread. Cow chips were the main source of fuel for baking and heating. [1920 Logan Co CO] Each July Fourth there was a community picnic with lots of fried chicken, roasting ears, and all the homemade ice cream you could eat. The men engaged in horse-shoe games. In the summer, neighbors would gather on Saturday night at a home that had a piano. They rolled up the rug, opened the windows, and to the spirited tunes from the piano, a fiddle and banjo or mandolin, they danced the three-quarter waltz, the polka, and the square-dance. Outside the children danced too. Most of them learned the square-dance calls and joined the adults at an early age. In 1922, the Snodgrass family returned to Kansas. In the fall of 1928, Roy Dack rented out the homestead and moved the family to Denver. In the winter of 1929, he deserted the family. Jim Dack had a live-in job working for the Wiesel brothers on their ranch. Mildred had married Jake Dawson of Stoneham in the fall of 1929. Nora took [the other three children,] Lauretta, Jack, and Virgil to Kansas to live with her father in the spring of 1929. A Sterling lawyer, engaged by two of Nora's brothers, established that half of the homestead was legally hers, because she had been a partner in improving on it. He also convinced Roy Dack to deed his half to the children with a life trust in Nora, so that she could support the family. In 1932 Nora, Jack, and Virgil returned to the homestead. At age 12, Virgil helped his mother farm during the early years of the Great Depression. They raised wheat and other grains. In 1935 Lauretta moved to Los Angeles seeking work. A year later Nora and the three boys joined her in California. In 1939 Jim died in an accident in Colorado Springs. After serving in the Army in World War II, Virgil married Edith Clark of Stoneham, where they built their house. Virgil continued to farm the homestead, but sold the original two-room house. It was moved to Sterling, where it still stands on Douglas Street. Following Nora's death in 1965, Virgil bought their shares from his sisters and brothers. He continued to farm the homestead until he sold it to Gary Dollerschell of Stoneham in 1929. At the time of her death, Nora lived in Ft. Lupton, CO. She had endured all the hardships of the early pioneer women, carried the responsibility of caring for her family alone, and suffered the anxiety of having two sons, Virgil and Jack, at war. Her selfless love and unwavering faith in God continues to be an inspiration and guiding light to her children.
