My wife died 28 Mar 1895. ------------------------- Deposition: Case of Nelson Snodgrass 14 Jul 1890, at Barnesville, Bourbon Co., KS...Nelson Snodgrass... My name is Nelson Snodgrass. Age 69 years. Occupation farmer. P.O. Barnesville, Bourbon Co., KS. I volunteered in Aug 1862 in Marion Co., WV, and was mustered in at Wheeling, WV in Co D. 3 WV Cav and was mustered out about 6 Jun 1865 at Wheeling, WV, from Co. D 3 WV Cav. In the spring of 1863 I think April at Fisher's Hill, VA, we were in battle and I received a musket ball in the muzzle of my navy revolver which threw my right arm back and injured my right shoulder to such an extent that I was not required to use or carry any saber afterwards. This musket ball was fired by the enemy we were going up the hill sight deep as there was a par-pet wall on the right of us as we went up and just as we got to the summit of the hill our first two platoons had just fired and the order was to return fire? and draw sabres and charge and it was just at this juncture that I received the ball in my navy hurting my right shoulder it did not wound my shoulder or clean out of joint but I was unable to swing my arm back and had to catch hold of my wrist and ____ my arm and shoulder and give it a twist before I could get it back and it was from this cause that I was excused from carrying a sabre. I was not in hospital for this injury and never received any treatment for it at all during my service. I was favored by my officers as much as possible I was commissary sergeant and never went on detail unless the whole company did. Since the am on the 10 Aug 1876 I fell from a horse and dislocated my right hip and parted the center ligament at the socket joint and at the same time I completed a dislocation of my right shoulder. I was treated for my shoulder and hip by Dr. Wm. Baird of Barnesville, KS. I was treated by Dr. Baird on account of said injuries about one year. I have not been treated by him since for the injuries to right hip and right shoulder. He set my shoulder twice during the time he was treating me for the injuries but my shoulder is still out of joint. I never had any treatment for the injury to my right shoulder from the date of my discharge up to the time I received the fall in aug 1876 and I have received no treatment since I was treated by Dr. Baird for the injuries to my right hip and shoulder which were received 10 Aug 1876. From the time I came out of the service up to the time I received the fall in Aug 1876 I was disabled about one half on account of the injury to my right shoulder which was received as above stated. ...I claim pension on account of deafness of both ears which was contracted during the summer of 1865 at "Starr Fort" Winchester VA by concussion of the two siege pieces which were fired over us we being down in the fort lying down I have never been treated for deafness during service or since discharge. I have been deaf ever since discharge and it has ___ very much against me in business I was elected assessor in 1868 in Marion Co., WV and by being deaf it ____ very much against me.... Q: Where did you live prior to your enlistment? A: I lived in Reevesville, Marion Co., WV. I was born and lived there until I enlisted. I lived at Reevesville, Marion Co., WV, from date of discharge to 1872 and since 1872 I have lived in Bourbon Co., KS. 16 Jul 1890 In addition to my statement made in my case yesterday relative to disabilities received in the service I had a malignant cancer on my right cheek about May or June 1863 at Hagerstown, MD. I don't know what caused it. I showed it to our Hospl Steward Chas. C. McClane now in Steubenville, Ohio, and he said he did not know what it was and it would develop itself. The second time I showed it to him it had bulged up the skin and he still remarked that he did not know what it was and I remarked to him that I feared it was a cancer. The next time I showed it to Morton Assist Regt. Surg. 3 W. VA. Cav. now dead, and he examined it and it had then got to be as large as an old fashioned five cent piece, and said he did not know what it was but would send me down to Brigade Hospl Headqrs and have it examined. He wrote a note to Brig. Hdqrs and I went down to Charleston W.VA and it was examined and the doctors pronounced it a malignant cancer. I don't remember the names of any of the doctors. He the surgeon wrote back to Morton stating what it was and told him to excise it. When I returned to Morton's Hdqrs he was not in. Hospl Stewd McClane broke the note open and read it and exclaimed if you ever let Morton excise it, it will kill you. He said the scientific world of doctors have never cured a cancer of malignant growth by excising it. I told McClane that there was a doctor in Marion Co., WV, near my original home who cured cancer and I would get a furlough and go home and he remarked that was all right and that would do. I got a furlough and went home in the winter of 1863 for fifteen days I went and seen the doctor Geo. W. Swisher and he commenced to treat me right off when the fifteen days had expired the cancer had not come out. I got my likeness taken and reported it back to my company and the doctor would not give his consent to my returning to my company for six weeks and when I did return to my company, I think it was Feby or March 1864 my right cheek was all raw. I think I went on furlough about holiday time 1863. The only treatment I received for the cancer was that given by Dr. Swisher. His P.O. address is Hoodsville, Marion Co., WV. I have never been treated for the cancer of my right cheek since discharge because it was cured but there is a large scar which is adherent to the cheek bone and my cheek is sunken and the right side of my face is disfigured on account of the cancer being removed. I did not know it was a cancer but i just suspicioned it was. No, I have never had one before or since that time. Q: Did any of your family ever have a cancer? A: Yes, a brother of mine had one and died in Macon, Macon Co., MO, about 1871 [vss - Nelson's brother Amos is on 1870 Macon Co MO] ==================== ##################################### BRECKENRIDGE COUNTY KS (see Lyon County) #################################################################### BROWN COUNTY KS (formed 1855 as original county) CENSUS RECORDS 1870 census - yes 1875 state census - yes 1880 soundex - yes 1900 census - yes 1910 miracode - yes 1920 census - yes PERIODICALS Midwest Hist. & Gen. SNODGRASS DIES IN HOSPITAL Aged and Respected Citizen Dies After Lingering Illness John Vance Snodgrass was born near Boling Green, KY, 12 Aug 1847. When 7 years old, he moved with his parents to Johnson Co., MO, where he lived until the year 1879, when he moved near Winfield, Cowley county, moving a few years later to Elk county where he resided until his death at Mon__. Mr. Snodgrass was married to Miss Anna M. Jackson 26 Oct 1876. Three daughters were born to this union, one dying in infancy. Two daughters, Mrs. Minnie Wilson, of Moline; and Mrs. Maude Shartel of Neosho, MO, together with is faithful wife survive him. Beside these he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Columbia Wright of Chilhowee, MO, and Mrs. Lula Rice of Marshall, MO, and one brother, David E., of Argonia, KS. Mr. Snodgrass had been in failing health for some time and for nine weeks he had suffered intensely. Death came to his relief early on the morning of 12 Jun 1915. He was aged 67 years and 10 months. This is a little part of the history of a human life, the history of an aggressive, honest life. Always gentle and courteous in his social relations and in his business operations tried to do to others as he would have them do to him. This was his rule of life. This obituary states that his early life was spent in Missouri, but his ambitious spirit turned his face westward, and in the 70's he came to Kansas... ...pioneer. Kind in spirit, gentle in manner, he has drawn to himself a large circle of friends. It can be said of him: "His life was gentle, and the elements so mixed in him that nature might stand up and say to all the world, 'This was a man.'" Those who have been most intimately associated with Mr. Snodgrass and who know his sterling qualities of honesty, and integrity, hold him in highest esteem. We do well if like him we "be what we are, speak what we think, and in all things keep ourselves loyal to the true and sacred professions of friendship." As a husband and father he was kind and affectionate. You, to whom he was dearest, can say, "Here sleeps one who was our friend With meek hands folded on his breast, When the first flowers of summer came We softly laid him down to rest." Funeral services were held at the home of his daughter Mrs. Louis Wilson near Moline. Rev. E. G. Coons of Grenola, M. E. church officiated, assisted by Mrs. Belle yates, pastor of Church. Interment was in the moline cemetery. The large attendance and the many beautiful floral offerings attest the high esteem in which Mr. Snodgrass was held. --------------------------- 1920 Census Grenola City, 529/16-124-3-45: Leonard Snodgrass 39-M-MO/IL/KY merchant drug clerk Clara Snodgrass 35-F-KS/KS/KS wife Grenola City, 529/16-124-3-80: Anna Snodgrass 59-F-IL/IN/IN wid. George was born in May 1851 in Brady Twp., Clearfield Co., PA. He moved with his parents, Peter and Catherine (Lohr) Seyler to Kansas. They moved around several counties. Rachael was born November 1856 in West Virginia. They were the parents of: Roy, born January 1881 Pearl, born July 1883 Maud, born May 1885 Claud H., born November 1888 Nina L., born April 1895 It is believed that they are buried in Centralia.
