Oblinger (apparently with her parents in MN) to her husband (in KS), Uriah Wesley Oblinger (1842-1901) (Transcription) Ottawa Minn Aug 17th 1887. Dear Husband. I guess I can date this 17th for the clock struck 12 a little while ago you may think it a queer time to write & so it is but Pa I could not sleep & so I lit the lamp & went to writing. my health has failed very fast the last 4 days but I think not getting sleep enough has something to do with it the last 4 nights I have waked up at 1 o'clock & not slept any after that but tonight I beat that I woke at 11 o'clock & I lay till 12 & I got so nervous I could not stand it any longer so I lit the lamp & this tells you what I am doing. I re'cd your letter with the money on the noon mail you wanted to know how much it would take for our winter clothing I can hardly tell you. I have got to have a new trunk to come home on as my other one will not stand the trip back you know it was badly used up when I started. my babies are about out of dresses as I have not made them but 2 since I came here I am going to have Papa make me a washing machine for it is impossible for me to do any heavy work like that. I dread the starting home time Papa & Mama are terribly opposed to me going back for they think the climate does not agree with me & they think I wont live long when I get back. I tell you the way I look at it & as I have told them so many times I was not well when I went there & I dont ever expect to be worth my salt as long as I live & I dont know as it makes much difference where I am. Mama got a letter from Mrs Norman yesterday & she says they have had no rain since the 8 of June I did not read the letter but Mama said she give Kansas its just dues & she was going to send the letter to you. I asked her if she thought they would be contented when they got back they have come back so many times & did not stay. they have stayed there fully as long as I thought they would there has been & is now lots of summer complaint here Mrs Bossonts youngest girl is very sick with it I think her recovery very doubtful I told mama if they were in Kansas it would be layed to the country. I have not seen any of Abias for a long time I hope they will come over before I go home I know I cant go there for I have got to save all my strength for my trip home. well Pa I am going to lay down & rest a while & finish this after. my back pains so bad I can hardly stand it I think my fall effects me now worse than it did at the time Well Pa it is morning now & I will try & finish this letter I went to asleep about 4 o'clock & did not wake till 5 so you see I had quite a nap but still for all that I feel real bad this morning. I dont seem to have blood enough I am so cold all the time I have such a sore mouth & throat all the time. Mama & a good many more think I wont stand long but I dont feel worried I know I wont go before my time to go any way & so that is the least of my troubles. I guess what makes her uneasy is because Mike Snodgrass wife died she had such a sore mouth before she was confined & they did not do any thing & as soon as she was sick it got worse & she lingered on & at last died & the Dr said that she was run entirely down by having children, (she has had 3 since they were married 4 years ago) & that she died for want of blood to support her. she did not seem to suffer any died very easy. I worte an account of her death & sent it to the News. I am using Dr Shilos catarrh for catarrh & it is recommended very highly for sore mouth & so I am using it for that. The babies are well, & hearty as pigs they was a little dumpy for a few days but are all right now. I have been very careful of them all summer but have never given them any medicine only bathing I have done that when I could hardly sit up. Well Pa I am sitting on the edge of the bed & not dressed & my feet are getting so cold I will have to stop & dress them. I commenced a letter to the girls sunday & I have felt so bad ever since I have neglected to finish it. I was suprised to hear of Jennie Wigintons death I see by the paper Mike Trantz is going to prove up on his home stead what is that for is he going to get out does he borrow money on it to prove up on. I think the money loaners are doing a good business there. There is going to be a prohibition Lecture here tonight I hope I will be able to go but I dont suppose I will. Well I must quit & go & eat my breakfast I am greatly favored in one think I dont have to be sick at my stomach all the time Pa you must write as often as you can I hope we will soon be over writing for all I dont feel as though I could hardly bear to go back to Kan to live but I do want to see you awful bad Love to you all write soon to your ever true & loving wife Laura I.
