[1900 Ohio Co KY; 1910 Butler Co KY] ------------------------------------------------- Jun 1978 -- The Old Timers News (newspaper): "The Centenarian," the Man in the Middle, by Cecil Snodgrass, 7th of 8 children of G. W. and Lu Ella Snodgrass. Whose great grand parents were born in the 17th century and his great grandchildren in 19th. Who was he and what were his dreams and his problems? What was his way of life and the results thereof? What was his philosophy? What was his name? His name was: G. W. Snodgrass, he was born in Butler County, Kentucky, March 20th, 1867. He lived one hundred three years one month and sixteen days. He was one of five living generations and at his death his descendants numbered one hundred and thirty. G. W.'s forefathers came from Ireland around 16-17 hundred and settled in North Carolina. His mother's people also lived in North Carolina near New Bern. Some of them later lived in Virginia. Around the year 1795 his great-grandfather, Isaac Newton Snodgrass, along with the Howards and a group of other people came to Warren County, Kentucky by way of Nashville, Tennessee. They traveled by barge on various rivers until they reached an area then known as Warren County. In 1817 they moved to Butler County. Due to rugged terrain and heavy undergrowth the area was known as the "Wild Country". Any land not continuously cultivated soon returned to jungle. It is reported that even today the place where G. W. once lived, and operated a store and post office, is now inaccessible except on foot or horse back. G. W. was one of nine sons and daughters of a baptist minister who fought in the Civil War on the Union (Yankee) side. He returned to farm in Butler County. Being raised on a farm he learned how to sow and reap and though he achieved what was then for that area a good education he chose to enter the realistic world of productivity as a frontier farmer. With this in mind he took to himself a child bride not yet sixteen years of age and set out on his own. Being of an independent spirit he early chose ownership as a requisite. This is a deed on record in Butler County showing that he purchased 64-1/2 acres of land on Indian Camp Creek for the total sum of $410.00. $260 cash, $90 due in four months and $60 due in six months. Quite an obligation for that time and area. Economists were virtually unknown in that day, especially in that remote area but G. W. being short on cash soon figured out that his only chance to increase his assets was to improve his property, sell it at a profit and reinvest in undeveloped property over and over again. To do so meant it would take time and a lot of personal labor. At that time changes in the way of life were so slow that time meant nothing. The profit was almost a certainty as soon as the project was accomplished. This practice he followed through his life and was successful until the later part of his life when this method no longer produced the desired result in time to meet the requirements of the changing times which required that capital be added to speed up the end result. Even in the early days some cash was required. To get it, as personal credit was virtually unknown in those days, he worked out for wages, mostly in the timber industry, both cutting and sawing. It was not unusual for him to put in a crop in the spring, sometimes with his log-snaking Ox teams, then go off to work in a timber operation while his eldest children and his wife tended the crops, raised a garden, fed the pigs, gathered the eggs and milked the cow. At harvest time he quit the timber, harvested the crops, laid in the wood for cooking and heating and otherwise prepared for winter and the planning of the next year's operation. In 1911 after owning various farms, a store and a post office in Butler County, he traded for a farm in Ohio County, Kentucky. Although this farm was perhaps only a days drive by team and wagon from where he previously lived it was more suitable for diversified farming which he had become interested in. This farm also contained a sizeable tract of good timber which lay alongside a railroad with a small creek adjacent with adequate water to supply a steam boiler with which to power a small saw mill. Having years of sawmill experience and a house full of sons old enough to man it under his supervision, he could see the possibility of year-round employment for his family. In the winter after the crops were in they felled the timber, cut it to saw length, held log-rollings to assemble the logs, burnt the slash and hauled the logs to the stationary mill which he set up at the point where the creek and the railroad converged. Being an experienced saw man he operated the log carrier and determined the cut. One son fired the boiler. Another son with the assistance, as needed, from the fireman, and another son who manned the saw dust pit, bore off the off-fall (slabs) from the carrier as the logs were cut. The son in the dust pit with an iron wheel home-made barrow loaded the wet sawdust into the barrow and pushed it up out of the pit and to a dumping area. Much of the timber was hardwood and made excellent cross ties. There was a ready market from the railroad for these ties. They were stacked alongside the railroad as cut and periodically a train having numerous flat cars would stop and load them up. Other timber was cut into rough lumber and sold for barns and fences. A large three story stock and tobacco barn was built on the farm. Poplar lumber was sold to a planing mill in town as it had a fine texture for finishing and made excellent finish and siding material. The land which had thus been cleared of timber was then cleared of underbrush and planted in crops the next spring. Being very fertile this land usually was planted to corn or tobacco, both cash crops. In the winter, when the weather was too severe to work in the timber, in the barn, there was always corn to be shucked or tobacco to be stripped and tied into hands. Also more wood to be hauled in for heating and cooking. On this farm a small herd of shorthorn cattle were started and the small harness mares commonly used for both riding, carriage and work stock, raised a good plow mule for light cultivation in small tracts which also were prevalent in the area, especially the hill country. G. W. saw that his mares did double duty by raising a mule while or as well as pulling the plow. He also planted an orchard to supplement the food which was otherwise raised on the farm, also selling fruit trees for a profit. Living a life pioneer style in those days had its compensations but it also had its hardships with no modern conveniences such as bath tubs, electricity, stoves or washing machines. No automobiles or credit cards were available. It required a great deal of resourcefulness and foresight. That G. W. had both was further demonstrated by the fact that from a Poplar tree, cut from his land, he sawed in his own saw mill, the lumber to make his casket. Few of us exhibit that much foresight at the age of forty seven. It is reported that not many years ago it was still stored in the tobacco barn on that place. With the frontier spirit still in him at the age of forty eight and his youngest child only two years old he traded (sight unseen), this small but good farm for a half section of land in Cimarron County, Oklahoma, an area then known as "No Mans Land". He then took his remaining family, two boys and two girls, west to become a dry land farmer, mostly wheat and small grains, and a breeder of horses. Arriving at Elkhart, Kansas, the nearest railroad town to his new land (43 miles), in mid November 1916 he purchased a team of heavy draft horses and a covered wagon and proceeded to Go West. After three days of travel into unknown country where there were no graded roads to guide him he arrived at the land. Certainly an arid farm with a one room shack for living quarters and no windmill or fences or trees was not a welcome sight for a family who had moved out of a large log house in a timbered country. The first winter was spent hauling water from a neighbors well a mile away, groceries and mail from a small store and P.O. three miles away and coal from 43 miles away. He had not learned of cow chips, that was to come later. As the years went by in his new home in the west there were some good crops, some fair and many complete failures, as is custom in all arid areas not under irrigation. Crops when raised had to be hauled a long distance to market. More machinery was required for farming. More horses to pull the machinery. The long trip to market required two wagons and six horses to make a pay load. Coal and groceries were hauled on the return trips. A trip required 2-1/2 to 3 days time. Feed for the horses had to be carried on top of the load. Large bed rolls were required to keep the driver warm as he many times was required to sleep out on the ground, waking up with snow on his cover. It took a great deal more cash to operate this new farm than the former ones and to span the gaps from crop through the droughts to another one. To get this cash G. W. first invested in a mixed breed of cows which would not only raise a calf, suitable for the beef market, but that would give enough milk to pay for milking. He sold cream as did many of his neighbors. His good wife raised chickens, sold eggs, raised a garden which was irrigated from the overflow of water from the stock tank, water which was pumped by the windmill. One of his sons made a wheat harvest or two in Kansas and sent home the earnings. Always looking to the future and planning in advance he decided that the area was short on good heavy draft horses to do the farming on so large a scale. Not having the cash to purchase heavy broodmares he invested in a registered percheron stallion and bred the light bronc mares which had been used as work animals. These broncs were small but vigorous and tough and some raised good colts but it required the second and third generation of them to produce real good draft animals. With this lapse of time, the truck and the tractor had replaced their usefulness and marketability and the best of them was worth less than $100, the worst $10. With an average of $35 it would take 100 of them to buy a truck and tractor with attachments. It was too little, too late. During the dust bowl days of the early thirties G. W. was require to take his ailing wife and his animals out of the area to save them. He remained away for two years. Starting again with fewer animals, only one child left at home and assets diminished it again was rough going. There were some good years and some bad. With failing health of both himself and his wife he sold the land and moved to town. The changing times and ways of the world were so great and so fast that the methods of success used as a frontiersman with little money would not produce the desired result in a short enough time to realize a profit. It must have been a very trying time for him to experience these reverses so late in life. There of course was no Social Security at that time and to go on relief even in last days was unthinkable to a man of his spirit. To worry about the support of his wife and himself must have been very trying. No doubt he could see this for the past several years, small wonder there was vinegar in his cup, his conversations and directives like telegraphic sentences, seemingly dictatorial and hard even bordering on the cruel. G. W.'s philosophy of life had been one of conservative industry, strong family life and ties, home ownership and a genuine desire to improve the lot of his family and himself. Many of his forefathers were baptist ministers and as such they adhered strictly to the Bible teachings that the man is the head of the family. As such he was responsible for family planning and all decisions which might affect them. Such responsibility (some would consider it a privilege) is enough to make most men bossy and dictatorial. But, have you ever noticed that under similar circumstances many women develop the same shortcomings? He also had a high regard for honesty, discipline, law and order. A spade was a spade and enforcement to him was as much a part of the law as the law itself. The meriods of interpretations of the law to fit each case, the release of law breakers, as practiced by our spineless moral derelicts called judges, the darwenian teachings and permissiveness which is practiced in our homes and schools, the dishonest practices of too many of our present day generation in general would have been a frustration beyond his comprehension. He was a Republican. In his day it represented a more conservative and sound long range viewpoint than did the democratic philosophy. It would have been a great disappointment to him had he known that the only philosophy that would be practiced today was that of, Get the votes, that the banner would be secondary to vote getting. The New Deal was abhorrent to his way of thinking. He would have been in despair had he known the true meaning of the New Frontier and the Great Society of the sixties. He probably would have thought that Watergate was some kind of an irrigation project. Could be, there were plumbers and a lot of trash got washed out. Even so they haven't been able to stop the leaks. Most of G. W.'s children would have openly stated they did not like the stern discipline and dictatorial policies of their father; however, at the same time they would be admitting that they did not like themselves very well either, for they and a large number of their children have inherited the same characteristics. None of us take any lip from anyone else. In case you doubt it, just ask your spouse (providing she has not already run you off). All of them are quick to express their opinion, usually in a very strong manner even before the circumstances are reviewed. Most of us have a tendency to lead while others follow. We want to get the job done. Since it is impossible to lead in most cases without giving directions and pointing out pitfalls, they appear to some to be bossy, especially to each other, since they all have a tendency to lead. This circumstance was plainly demonstrated last winter when Roy and the writer was building a fence on the writer's land near Deming, N.M. After three days of telling the writer what to do and how, Roy suddenly said, "I guess you think I am terribly bossy, but I have been boss for over thirty years and it is hard to realize that I am not in this case." The writer got a big charge out of it. Having been a boss for many years he had figured out that anyone with bossing ability coupled with a desire to work himself would produce twice that produced by the average follower. Whetting his ego by objecting to the bossing was not to be considered when so much work could be obtained for free from the eager beaver. G. W. was not only a family man but a religious man. His discipline of respect for these two institutions runs strong in his descendants. Witness the fact that six grandsons were casket bearers at his funeral. Two of them came over one thousand miles not knowing they would so perform after arriving. No one forced them to come. Some of us would have to see some immediate action in order to have six grandchildren of any kind. To date the writer can boast of only three cats, 1 black, 1 white and 1 striped. I doubt by the time we of the second generation die it will be against Union Rules or so called Professional Ethics for a relative or friend to be a casket bearer. The discipline of family loyalty and love of God was further demonstrated in connection with the writer's own recent loss, by phone calls, letters, flowers, and offers of service, both personal and financial) by not only his brothers and sisters but by nephews, nieces, and great nieces. Contrast that loyalty with that of two sisters, whose mother recently passed away. This lady had been a christian woman the major portion of her life, had served her Lord, her church, her friends and her family with love and kindness both physically and financially. Her love was openly demonstrated too because she herself was a loving person. Her friends were legion. To honour this exemplary life as we... their mother as such and to give her many friends the pleasure and privilege of paying their last respects to her, these two daughters, both modern executives, suggested a small quiet graveside service, changing their minds only after being prevailed upon. They of course saw to it that a $65 floral spray was placed at the casket. They generously mailed the bill for it to the step-father whose only income the preceding six months had been a small social security check. This despite the fact that each daughter had a husband who held a good job and each had only one child. The happiness that comes with living with a spouse who daily personally demonstrates their love in a very personal way can only be known and appreciated by those who have been fortunate enough to do so. The writer with two children and little money being the sole support of his family for twenty one years had found little time to personally demonstrate his love. His time was spent (Bossing), showing the way and pointing out the pitfalls. Not having a strong voice it sometimes became necessary to apply power to raise it. He then was accused of preaching. With eight children to raise? WELL! But personally demonstrated love is not the only kind of love. There are many acts of indirect love. Like, the decision to take a bride, the decision to raise a family, the purchase and improvement of a home, the planting of a tree or a vineyard, a flower, the starting of a herd. Teaching right from wrong, the discipline of honesty, restraint, temperance and control. The going with your family to church not only to worship and sing God's praises but to help educate your children as to their origin and their hereafter that they may themselves decide if they will go to heaven or spend eternity in hell. All these and many more are acts of love although in our ineptness they did not appear as such. We believe that G. W. had this kind of love and the lives of the majority of his descendants have demonstrated that fact, and though he died a poor man when measured in worldly goods, his life was not a failure. Such then, was the life of "THE CENTENARIAN", the Man in the Middle, whose life span bridged the span between the 17th <18th> and the 19th <20th> century when the greatest change in the lifestyle and thinking of many took place that has occurred in recent history. This was the man, G. W. Snodgrass who lived 103 years to produce 130 descendants with 121 of them living at his death. BUT, no man can accomplish all these things alone. What then of the Mother of this tribe? the child bride, Who held his hand, and made his bed; Who listened in silence, to all he said; Who darned his sox, and cooked his meals; Who hoed the garden while he tended the fields; Who washed the diapers, for the children she bore; And every two years, there were more and more; Who traded her bed, for a lantern at night; At the cry of a child, who might be in fright; Who tended his store, and put out the mail; Who saw the crops grow, and saw them fail; Who through it all, she stayed by his side And wept with him, when the daughter died; Who was born in the east, but moved to the west; Whose life span was eighty, when she was laid to rest; Her name was LuElla Jane Evans Lu Ella Jane, was also born in Butler County, Kentucky, August 5th, 1873. Her great grandfather came to Kentucky from Virginia in 1795. She could also claim as her foreparents some of the Cooks who originally came to America in the ship Mayflower. Her grandmother on her mothers side was a Coy, believed to be a relative of the eastern Kentucky families commonly referred to as "The Hatfields and the Coys, those reckless mountain boys." Her father, Moses Evans, fought in the civil war on the side of the Rebels (South). Lu Ella was a medium sized woman, soft spoken, of a retiring nature who performed her duties as was custom in those days of submissive wives. Bearing her children plagued with ill health and an endless amount of work she asked for little and complained little. She loved her children and was always glad to see them but never dictated when they were to visit them again. Although she was not the strict disciplinarian as her husband, she nevertheless could wield the switch and did so when occasion demanded. There was no lack of discipline under her supervision. Hers was the truly Pioneer life, wood cook and heating stoves, wash tub and rub-board, no bath tub until the later days. Coal oil and gasoline lamps and lanterns were her lot the major portion of her life and a four burner oil stove was the most modern appliance she ever possessed. For many years she was plagued with fevers and gallstones. Living in rural areas she suffered much. Not being able to drink milk she ate her cereal with water, UGH. But she complained little. Although ill a great portion of her life, she lived eighty years only to die of hospital pneumonia after having been confined for a broken hip which had almost healed. She was laid to rest by her daughter and grandchildren who had preceded her in death, in the family grave site at Boise City, Oklahoma. ######################################################## CLEVELAND COUNTY (976.637) CENSUS RECORDS 1900 soundex - yes 1910 miracode - yes ***************************** RECORDS 1900 Cleveland Co OK Census/Soundex Case Twp., 3-26-10-63: Thomas S. The remains were laid to rest in the Hillside Cemetery this afternoon, the funeral services were held at the Methodist church and were conducted by Reverend Grose. Despite the muddy roads a large concourse of sorrowing friends and neighbors escorted the remains to their final resting place. David W. Snodgrass was born in York county, Pennsylvania, on May 22, 1852. While a child his parents came west and he resided in and around Washington Iowa until 1908. In 1878 he united in marriage to, Miss Anna Drennon, and their union was blessed by four children, three boys and one girl all of whom survive him to comfort their grief-stricken mother. In 1908 he came to Craig county, Oklahoma, and purchased the farm where he died. Despite the fact that the seasons he resided here were unfavorable, by patient industry and well directed effort he has been successful to a marked degree. For several weeks past Mr. Snodgrass has been in poor health, suffering from what appeared to be a form of rheumatic affection, but his condition was not considered alarming. In fact, he appeared to be convalescing, and the evening prior to his death he was so much improved that he felt safe in attending the religious services held in the school house held near his residence. Returning home at the close of the service he retired as usual, but ere the dawn of the succeeding day the summons of the Grim Reaper that brooks no cavil came unexpected and terse and his spirit wended its way to the Great Beyond. His sterling honesty, good judgement and progressive ideas won for him the confidence and esteem of all who came in contact with him. and the sorrowing relatives have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community in their great bereavement. ##################################### CREEK COUNTY OK CENSUS 1910 miracode - yes 1920 soundex - yes **************************** RECORDS 1910 Creek Co OK Census/Miracode 16-49-94: Elizabeth E. It was on the 58th anniversary of that historic day in 1893 when he made the Run into the famed Cherokee Strip that citizens from the entire area of northwest Oklahoma gathered at his [Judge Milton Garber's] beautiful country home, Elmstead, north of the city, to pay him final tribute. Hundreds of friends gathered with bowed heads to honor the death of him whom they had called friend and advisor in life. They came from near and far, the rich and the poor, the white, the black, and the red man to join the solemn service conducted by the Rev. Isaac Newton McCash, President Emeritus of Phillips University, Enid, fellow mason and friend of the deceased. The prayer was offered by the Rev. Ray E. Snodgrass, pastor of the First Christian Church, of which congregation Judge Garber was a member. The Honorable P. C. Simmons, representing the Garfield County Bar Association, gave the eulogy. ##################################################### GARVIN COUNTY (976.656) CENSUS 1910 miracode - yes 1920 soundex - yes *********************************** RECORDS 1910 Garvin Co OK Census/Miracode 20-75-95: Priss Snodgrass 34-M-TX [Preston H. She was married in the year of 1858 to Mr. J. S. SNODGRASS. To this union were born twelve children, three dying in infancy and two, Lucretia Groves and John H. SNODGRASS, died after becoming grown to womanhood and to manhood. Seven which are still living and were present at the funeral are: Hiram C. Also one brother, Mr. Bill COOPER of Frederick, Okla., and one sister, Mrs. Sue ROGERS of Vandalia were present. In the year of 1858 they moved to Brown County, Kans., and then in the year 1891 they moved to Oklahoma where they have lived on the homestead place, seven and one-half miles northeast of Kingfisher, until the time of her death, which occurred Feb. 12, 1912, caused by bronchitis and heart trouble. She has been an invalid for the past thirteen years, but had been bed-fast for about two months.
