During the period 1850 - 1900, our records identify only one documented child being born in Rhode Island to the parents in question: Mabel Eldora Snowdgrass, 2nd child of James & Etta M., May 28, 1896, Riverside, East Providence, Rhode Island (State Birth Register, Vol. 1896, pg. 159). Note: An expanded search of the 1905 Rhode Island State Census did yield documentation on the following members of this family: James Snodgrass, head of family, born Canada, Feb. 28, 1865 William F. Snodgrass, son, born Riverside, May 19, 1892 Leroy H. Snodgrass, son, born Dec. 26, 1898 Henrietta Snodgrass, wife, born Vermont, June 26, 1874 Mabel E. Snodgrass, born Riverside, May 29, 1895 Mildred E. Snodgrass, born Riverside, January, 1904. I suspect the births of William F. and Leroy H., were never documented with the town registrar in East Providence. to further you research copies of these 1905 census references are being forwarded to you along with the birth record of Mabel Eldora Snowdgrass. I checked through 1920 for Henrietta's entry. What I did find: Birth record - Mabel Eldora Snodgrass b. 28 May 1896, East Providence, RI Marriage Index entry (someone else was using the actual marriage entry film) for James Snotgrass [sic] and Etta (drumroll, please) Parkhurst m. 12 Jan 1892. James came from New Brunswick. 1905 RI state census entries for the family: Mabel E Snodgrass b. 29 May 1895, Riverside (E. Providence) RI Henrietta Snodgrass b. 26 Jun 1874, VT Mildred E Snodgrass b. Jan 1904, Riverside RI James Snodgrass b. 28 Feb 1865, Canada Leroy H Snodgrass b. 28 Dec 1898, Riverside, RI William F Snodgrass b. 19 May 1892, Riverside, RI The census entries are not terribly clear; I could be misreading. Also there's the discrepancy with Mabel's dates; I would trust the census less. And I note without comment Williams birth relative to the marriage. James came to U.S in 1865. His parents came from Ireland. 1915 RI state census entry showing James (only) as a "roomer" in a house with the head of household Mary F Read, age 50; and Catherine Perry, age 31, the "mother" of the head of household. No wonder people call RI a backward state. East Providence city directory entries (listing usually only the male head of household) presented more or less verbatim: - 1894 through 1902 Snodgrass James, farmer, house 82 Oak Av. Riverside - 1905/1906 Snodgrass James, farmer, house 15 Taylor Av. Riverside - 1910 Snodgrass James, farmer, boards 28 Earle Av. Riverside - 1913 Snodgrass James, farmer, house 484 Bullock's Point Av. Riverside - 1915 through 1918 Snodgrass James, farmer, house 30 Earle av. Riverside - 1919 Snodgrass James (Mary F), farmer, house 20 Willett Av. Riverside The 1905 address is the same as the 1905 census; the 1915 is the same as the 1915 census. The 1919 entry includes, I guess, an attempt to show a wife. The name Mary F. I would take to be probably Mary F. Read. Well that's it. I'll pick up the marriage entry sometime and then I'll ship what I have to you and you can straighten it all out. Are you sure you don't want any Henry's?
