He was the son of Will and Mary A. Snodgrass; Will was born June 9, 1832 and Mary A. born Jan. 5, 1838. E. C. Snodgrass married Mary Allie Thompson April, 1901 at Panhandle, Texas, and they first lived on a farm near St. Francis. In 1912 they built the rock house south of the schoolhouse in Washburn. E. C. (Clarence), and Jeff Thompson had just completed Jeff's home. Mary Allie was born June 21, 1883 at Fort Worth, and she was the daughter of J. R. and Huldah Thompson.* E. C. and his wife had three children: <1> Mary Evelyn (Eva) Moore was born Sept. 9, 1903 and lives in Houston, Texas. <2> Tom Clifford was born September 7, 1906 and now lives in Phoenix, Arizona and is a carpenter. He married Lorene Harrison and they have a child Jessie Mae born April 30, 1943. She also lives in Phoenix. <3> Ella Pearl was born April 29, 1919 at Washburn and married George Tom Solomon July 4, 1946; they have a son, Carroll Don, born July 7, 1949. Tom had retired from the Texaco Company before his passing in August 23, 1959. Ella Pearl and son continue to live in Amarillo. Mr. Snodgrass sold his home, almost finished, to Ed Baker family (Callie Robison's father), and the Snodgrass family moved to the former Billy Bishop home, in southwest Washburn. Ed Baker was a brother to R. D. Baker north of Washburn. In the Will Snodgrass family were three sons and a daughter: <1> Bill lived in Denver, then with his parents on farm, then moved to Corpus Christi. <2> E. C. or Clarence, above. <3> George was the younger brother, born November 8, 1879 and died August 11, 1898. The daughter, <4> Ella, married Sam Thomas and lived in Oklahoma. Strader, by J. H. Biggs. 1889 -- Bio. Souvenir of the State of Texas, page 780: Joseph Snodgrass, now a thriving farmer of Texas, was born in Washington County, Ohio, in September, 1830. He was reared to agricultural pursuits, and at the age of twenty-two went to Iowa, where, January 1, 1857, he married Miss Elizabeth Keister, daughter of Captain William Keister, of Virginia, but for a long time post- master of Hickory Grove, Iowa. As the years rolled on, five children came to brighten the home of Mr. and Mrs. Snodgrass, and were named Marietta Anna, Rosa Ella, William Roy (died in infancy), Joseph Demoss and J. Ernest. Soon after his marriage Mr. Snodgrass came to Texas, and was among the first to settle on what are called the "flats," where he bought 320 acres of raw prairie land, on which he took up his residence in May, 1857. Some doubt existed in the minds of many as to the arable nature of the flats, but Mr. Snodgrass showed them to be first-class farming land, and what was but a sparsely settled district on his coming is now thickly populated. Although timber was a long way off he has succeeded in fencing the farm completely, and in erecting handsome buildings, and has placed a large part of the land under cultivation. He had hardly felt himself comfortable in his new home, however, when the Civil War broke out, and in 1862, he enlisted in Company H, Twenty-ninth Texas cavalry, but the same year was transferred to Company K, of the same regiment, and the following winter was detailed for duty in the commissary department, in which he served until the close, chiefly in the Indian Territory. On his return he resumed farming, and is looked upon as one of the most progressive and enterprising agriculturists in his section. He is a Knight of Honor, and a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, holds a high position socially, and is universally respected. The father of Mr. Snodgrass was Beniah Snodgrass, of Virginia, who early settled in Ohio, and died in 1849. The mother of Mr. Snodgrass bore the maiden name of Ann E. McKibben, and was a daughter of David McKibben, a native of Virginia. Mrs. Gabriella Snodgrass, ... - - - - - - - - - - page 935: Charles S. Swindells, notary and book-keeper for Pitman & Harrison, is a native of Dallas county, born August 25, 1865. His parents were John and Minerva H. (Crutchfield) Swindells, natives of New York and Kentucky, respectively. The father, who was a printer all his life, came from Norfolk, Virginia, to Dallas, Texas, in 1852, and bought an interest in the Dallas Herald, buying it for Mr. Latimer. He was connected with this paper, having several successive partners until 1875, when he sold his interest to Messrs. Fox, John F. Elliott and Hall, and then traveled for the Herald for some time. In 1876 he was elected to carry the electoral vote of Texas to Washington. He had several opponents, but defeated them. During the war he served as Adjutant of the regiment for a time. He was Executive Clerk in the office under Governor Hubbard of Texas, serving during his term of office. He was Assistant Secretary of the Fifteenth Legislature; and was Calender Clerk of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Legislatures. He was in the Comptroller's (State) office for two years; and later on was appointed Chief Clerk of the Insurance Statistics and History Department of the State, dying while serving in this capacity in October, 1884, aged fifty-nine. He was a member of the Episcopal Church. The parents of his wife were Thomas F. and Francis Crutchfield, of Kentucky, most worthy people, and many of their virtues are transmitted to their grandchildren who were nine in number, as follows: Eugene W., resident of Dallas, traveler for Dorsey & Company, dealers in printers' supplies. He had the contract for State printing for a number of years, and had the largest printing office in the State at that time. He is a man of good business qualifications. The next child is Fannie B., wife of Ben W. Austin; our subject; Archie K., connected with the Crescent News Company; Lollie Nellson, a school girl of Dallas. The remainder died in infancy. The mother is still living, aged fifty two, is an accomplished lady and a member of the Episcopal Church. Our subject was educated, for the most part, in the printing office, attending business college several terms, at Austin and Dallas. He worked in the printing office most of the time until he was twenty-three years of age, except during two sessions of the Legislature, the Sixteenth and Seventeenth, when he was page in the Senate. He was a special favorite with many of the leading Senators. Leaving the printing office he engaged in the real estate business until January, 1892, when he began keeping books for the firm of Pitman & Harrison, and has continued at this business ever since. He was married in April, 1888, to Miss Mamie T. Snodgrass, whose parents died when she was quite young. She was reared by her aunt, Mrs. Jennie Blair, of Dallas. Mr. and Mrs. Swindells have two children, the pride and joy of their parents' lives, viz.: Minnie H. and Marguerite Annis. Mr. Swindells is a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Dallas. He takes a warm interest in Democratic politics. He is a man who is largely self-educated, but is most thorough and competent in business and calculations. He occupies a high position in the community. His father was a celebrated man before him, as the publisher of the Herald, which has the largest circulation of all papers in the State for years. He was ever keenly alive to the interests of Dallas, and had much to do in the shaping of the legislation of the city; and what the city of Dallas is today is mainly due to his efforts.
