Death came suddenly to Charles Sherman Snodgrass, 72, yesterday when he was at Lake Chelan, where he has been staying since July 1. The well-known pioneer Cherry street orchardist had been rowing his boat when he felt ill and returned to the dock. He was lying down, resting, at the time of his death. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday from the Jones & Jones chapel, with the Rev. W. B. Young officiating. Mr. Snodgrass was born 20 Aug 1865 in Rensellar, IN. When he was 15, he went by covered wagon with his parents to Little River, KS, in the fall of 1880. On 22 Sep 1887 he was married to Alice M. Sellers, who died in 1895. He was married to Edna Howard 25 Aug 1897. In 1918 he came to Wenatchee, purchasing orchards on Cherry and Castle Rock avenues, which he operated until the time of his death. He was affiliated with the F. & A. M. of Little River, KS. Surviving are his widow, Edna; four sons, Ben, Chris, Ansel, and Howard of Wenatchee; four daughters, Mrs. Frank Hybbard of Hutchinson, KS; Mrs. Glen Graham and Mrs. L. C. Ives of Cashmere; and Mrs. Harold Riker of Manson; one brother, Minor, of Copeland, ID; 16 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. - - - - - - - - - - Tribute by Rufus Woods, Editor, Wenatchee World: C. S. Snodgrass, whose death came so suddenly at Chelan Thursday and whose funeral is being held today, was one of those men who developed and held many interesting acquaintances throughout the country. He was well acquainted in Kansas with men like Senator Capper, Governor Allen, Victor Murdock. Yes, he knew Carry nation, who is virtually unknown today, but whose name was known to everybody in the country three and four decades ago. Carry, that was the way she spelled her name, believed in direct action, and when some of her folks took on too uch liquor, she went after the saloons with a hatchet. With much delight, Mrs. Snodgrass used to tell me of those intriguing days of Kansas politics. For Kansas in those days was the center of attention of the entire country. And Snodgrass for many years was a state officer and resided at Topeka. He was there during the days when William Allen White, then an unknown country editor, got disgusted with the way capital was being driven out of the state, and he wrote, "What's the Matter with Kansas?" It was an editorial, but it flashed fire and became a campaign document and was run off by the millions. Snodgrass also was a life-long acquaintance of Senator Borah and knew him when that celebrity was a very young man in Kansas. ----------------------- 27 Sep 1967 -- Obituary: Edna Snodgrass dies after short illness. Mrs. Edna E. Snodgrass, 86, of the Vradenburg Apts., Wenatchee, died Wednesday 27 Sep in a local hospital following a short illness. Mrs. Snodgrass was born on 11 Nov 1880, in Little River, KS, and spent her early life there. She married Charles S. Snodgrass there. In 1918 they moved to Wenatchee, where they purchased an orchard. Mr. Snodgrass preceded her in death in 1938. Mrs. Snodgrass was a member of the First Methodist Church and the West Wenatchee Grange. Survivors include: two sons, Ansel N. Snodgrass, East Wenatchee, and Howard Snodgrass, Seattle; two daughters, Mrs. Harold Riker, Manson; and Mrs. Eva Graham, Corona, CA; one step-daughter, Mrs. Sue Ives, Kirkland; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Snodgrass, one of the large landowners of Klickitat county, has been more than ordinarily successful as an agriculturist, and is worthy of extended notice in this connection. He is a native of West Virginia, born September 6, 1855, a son of Nathan and Rhoda (Amuss) Snodgrass. His parents removed from Virginia to Illinois, and settled in Edgar county, where they resided a few years, going thence to Leavenworth county, Kansas. In 1874 he determined to seek his fortunes in the Golden State and so came to California, settling in Yolo county; there he remained for a period of two years, and then went to Sonoma county, in the same State. After a few months he engaged in agricultural pursuits near Sacramento city, and continued in this vocation until 1880. In the year just mentioned he came to Washington and located in Klickitat county, where he owns a valuable tract of land containing 720 acres, situated seven miles southeast of Goldendale. Four hundred acres are under cultivation, and produce bountiful crops of grain. Mr. Snodgrass manages his vast farming interests with keen intelligence, and rotates his crops so as to gain best results. His ideas are not, however, bound by his fields; he takes an active interest in the support of the public school system, and for several years has served as Director of school district No. 12. He affiliates with the I. O. O. F. and A. O. U. W. of Goldendale. While a resident of California, on September 3, 1877, he was united in Marriage to Miss Pearl Griffith, a native of the Golden State. They have a family of six children: George M., Wesley, John R., Thomas D., Elfie L. and Lucy. The efficient superintendent of the county hospital of Stevens county resides at Colville and is one of the well known and highly respected men of the county. He was born in Bates county Missouri, July 13, 1854, the son of Isaac and Susan (Meyers) [Myers] Snodgrass, natives of Tennessee and Indiana, respectively. They were pioneers to Missouri, in 1881 moved to Spokane, where they farmed until 1900, and now reside in the city of Spokane. They were the parents of six children, Eugene O., Oscar F., Sherman E. [Edgar Sherman], John D., Ernest, and Emma M., widow of George Thayer. Our subject received his education in those great institutions of the American commonwealth, the public schools, and spent the first twenty years of his life with his parents. Then he went to Texas and did farming, after which he clerked in a general merchandise establishment. During this latter occupation Mr. Snodgrass augmented his educational training by a thorough course in the correspondence schools. In 1887 he came to Spokane county, Washington, operated a saw mill and farmed on Hangman creek for several years. In 1892 he located on the Columbia river in Stevens county and did general farming and stock raising. The next occupation was conducting a fruit crier in Kettle Falls and in 1893 he was appointed to take charge of the county hospital, which he is still conducting to the satisfaction of all. Mr. Snodgrass has property in various sections of the county and is a prosperous business man. On October 3, 1879, Mr. Snodgrass married Miss Missouri, daughter of Shepherd and Mary (Robison) McNabb, natives of Tennessee and Missouri, respectively. The father was a preacher and removed to Texas, where he died in 1901. The mother is living with a son in Oklahoma. They were the parents of six children. To Mr. and Mrs. Snodgrass five children have been born, Ernest G., Mary S., Grace M., Herbert H., and John A. Mr. Snodgrass is a very active and prominent Republican and has been a delegate to every convention since setting in this county. He has been road supervisor and school director and while in Kettle Falls, was two years police judge and one year councilman. Fraternally, he is affiliated with the I. O. O. F., A. F. & A. M., W. W., and the Rebekahs. Mrs. Snodgrass is a member of the Rebakahs and also of the Grand Lodge. They are both adherents of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. In 1884 while in Marcelina precinct, Wilson county, Texas, [vss - borders Bexar Co] Mr. Snodgrass cast the only Republican vote out of one hundred and fifty-two votes in the precinct. One hundred and fifty -one went Democratic, while this one went republican straight. Governor's Chadwick and Ferry were instrumental in forming a Volunteer Militia Company composed equally of Oregon and Washington citizens. W.C. Painter of Walla Walla was elected Captain; Dr. J.M. Boyd, First Lieutenant; and Frank B. Morse, Second Lieutenant. The 96 men comprising the company were from Walla Walla, Pendleton and Pilot Rock. The company was organized at Walla Walla on July 14th and was disbanded on 26 August 1878. The primary mission of the company was to prevent the hostiles from crossing the Columbia. About one-half of the company was detailed on the Steamboat "Spokane" patrolling the Columbia. Captain Painter for his efficient leadership was shortly afterward appointed Lieutenant Colonel and Aide-de-Camp to Governor Ferry. After serving with the armed forces during the Korean War, he attended Washington State University, where he was a heavyweight boxer, receiving his degree in 1959. He later did graduate work at Central Washington State College. He was a teacher and coach at Quinault High School from 1961 through 1965 and was high school principal at Mabton from 1965 through 1968. He spent the 1968-69 school year as principal of Mt. St. Helens High School, Winlock, before moving to Eatonville, where he also has served as principal. He was a member of the Eatonville Town Council, served as an Eatonville police commissioner and was a member of the Eatonville Lions and Sportsmen's Clubs. Following his military service, he worked in the timber industry in Oregon and California for many years. Snodgrass later moved to Alaska, where he worked as a commercial fisherman. His time was split between summers spent fishing in Alaska and winters at home in Florida. Snodgrass, 45, a former Lewis County resident of the Dryad area, was fatally shot here Christmas Eve by Earl Phillip Thompson, 24, Raymond, who later shot himself, according to Pacific County Sheriff William Webb. Mr. Snodgrass was born Oct. 15, 1925 at Dryad and had lived in the Raymond area for several years. He was employed as a logger and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Raymond American Legion Post.
