AGNES ANTOZKIEWICZ

The name is spelled "Antoszkiewicz" on the gravestones of this family, but it is been spelled various ways by members of the family. In fact, Nurse Agnes eventually used the surname ANDREWS.

Agnes is first found in the 1900 Federal Census of Dunbar Twp., Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Valentine and Mary Antoszkiewicz, both born in Poland, immigrated to the United States in 1893 and 1884, respectively. At the time of the 1900 census, Valentine, 29, and Mary, 22, had two daughters, Elizabeth, born November 1896, and Agnes, born in January 1899.

In 1910, the family of Valentine "Antonviscavich" was residing in East Huntingdon, Westmoreland County, at which time Valentine was a laborer at the sheet steel mill. The children of Valentine and Mary were: Lizzie, 13, Agnes, 11, Bridgie, Stella, 6, Clarence, 5, Francis, 3, and Anastacia, 1.

In 1920, Agnes "Antosekiewicz," 21, born in Pennsylvania, parents born in Germany, was employed as a servant in Scottdale Borough, Westmoreland County.

In the 1930 census, Valentine and Mary Antoszkiewicz were living in Scottdale, Westmoreland County. They owned their home, and were Naturalized Citizens. Agnes was not in the family home. - She is found in the 1930 census as Agnes "Antockewish," 25, a hospital nurse, a roomer in a family home on Mathilda St., Pittsburgh, along with two other nurses. Agnes was born in Pennsylvania and her parents were born in Germany.

Elizabeth "Lizzie" Antoszkiewicz died of pneumonia in 1916.

Agnes "Antoszkiewicz," of Scottdale, was the informant when one of her brothers died in 1935 in a car wreck at age 30. He is named "Aloyzy" in the death record.

Agnes' family - "Antoskwick" - was still living in Scottdale, Westmoreland County, in 1940, but Agnes was not in the family home.

Agnes D. Antoskevich, Nurse, is found in the 1942 City Directory of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

The mother, Mary (Pakurska/Pakolski), born in 1877, died in 1953.

OBITUARY: The Daily Courier, Feb 6, 1953 - MRS. JOHN ANTOSKEVICH, 74 years old, of 10th Street, North Scottdale, died Wednesday night at her home. - She leaves her husband, John Valentine; five daughters, Mrs. Michael Luscas of North scottdale, Mrs. Victor Knerski of Scottdale, Miss Agnes of Pittsburgh, Frances at home and Mrs. Edward Briggs of Chicago, Ill.; one son, Joseph, at home; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. - There will be a prayer at the home at 9:30 o'clock Saturday morning and requiem mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph's R. C. Church at Everson, at 10 o'clock in charge of Rev. A. J. Pobtowska. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

"Agnes D. Antoszkiewicz," as written on her gravestone, was born January 16, 1899, and died of metastatic cancer on May 3, 1956 at Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh. At first glance at her obituary, it appeared that she might have married. However, her death record indicates that she was never married, and she had used the surname ANDREWS. The death record states that she was a registered nurse, born in Connellsville, Pennsylvania.

Agnes, her parents, and a number of her siblings are buried at Saint Joseph Roman Catholic Cemetery, Everson, Fayette County.
