Karel Botula arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Hannover on April 24, 1903. His wife, Johana, came with their first three children (Karola, Maxmillian and Frantiska) on the S. S. King Albert from Bremen and arrived at New York on September 5, 1903. [ellisisland.org] They settled in Cokeburg Borough, Washington County, Pa., and Karel (aka Charles) worked in the mines.

Mr. & Mrs. Botula were still in Cokeburg at the time of the 1920 census. Daughter, Karola, was not found, but her sister, Francis (originally "Frantiska"), was listed as a student nurse at St. Francis Hospital. Francis graduated in 1922; Karola graduated in 1929. Francis was not found after the 1920 census.

O'Connell, Max K., Mrs. C. B. Duffy, Mrs. B. F. Zink, Mrs. Edward L. Wibner, Julia, Charles, and Ted Botula; also survived by 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at John A. Freyvogel's, 3406 Fifth Ave. Funeral Friday morning, March 14, at 8:30 o'clock. High mass of requiem at St. Agnes Church at 9 o'clock.

OBITUARY - Post-Gazette (Pittsburgh, PA) - May 2000 -- KAROLA O'CONNELL - On Monday, May 22, 2000; Age 100; beloved wife of the late Cornelius J. O'Connell; sister of Mary Botula Wibner and predeceased by four brothers and four sisters; also survived by nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS, INC. 4900 Centre Ave. At Devonshire Street Friday from 8:30am -9:15 am. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. James Church, Wilkinsburg, at 10:00 am.

Note: The name is spelled "Karola" - not "Karole" - in more recent records. She was born September 16, 1899, and at the time of her death she lived at Allison Park, Allegheny County, Pa. Her husband died in November 1976.
