MARGARET C. BUCHTA SKUDNESKI

Class of 1931

Margaret Catherine Buchta was born on November 1, 1909 in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana, according to her birth certificate. Her parents are listed as John Buchta and Mary Macuth. Her middle name has also been found as "Kathryn."

At the time of the 1920 Federal Census, Margaret C. Buchta, 10, born in Indiana, lived with her family in Charleroi, Washington County, Pennsylvania. Her parents are listed as John H. and Mary M., both born in Vienna, Austria. They immigrated in 1902 and had become Naturalized Citizens in 1914. (The immigration details vary in later census records.) Margaret's siblings in 1920 were Rudolph T., Agnes E., and Leonard J. Two other children, Andrew J. and Mary Z. Shofskey, were apparently Mrs. Buchta's children from a previous marriage. (In 1910, Margaret had three half-siblings, Andrew, William and Mary, surname Matiashofsky. Margaret Buchta was 6 months, and her brother, Rudolph Buchta, was 1 1/2.)

In the 1930 census, Margaret Buchta, 20, was a student nurse, living at the Nurses' Residence at St. Francis Hospital. The record indicates she was born in Indiana and her parents were born in Austria.

The obituary of Margaret's half-brother provides the information about her married name, Skudneski. ["Step brother" is incorrect in the obit, since they had the same mother.]
