DOROTHY ELIZABETH CASPER HALL

Class of 1942

Dorothy Casper, born December 26, 1920, was the daughter of Vincent Casper (1886-1961), born in Italy, and Mary Blumette/Blumet, born in Pennsylvania. Mary, 27, died at St. Francis Hospital on May 31, 1923 of heart failure and pneumonia. She is buried at St. Mary's Cemetery, Sharpsburg.

In the 1930 Federal Census of Sharpsburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, Dorothy's siblings were Rose, Lucie, Margaret, and Peter. Vincent had married Maria Foglia (1900-1964) and worked as a Craneman at a pipe mill.

Dorothy was 1st Lieutenant in the U. S. Army Nurse Corps during World War, II. She served two periods, between April 1, 1943 and December 16, 1945.

In Broward County, Florida, on December 18, 1950, Dorothy E. Casper, 30, Registered Nurse, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, married Clarence E. Hall, 33, a Police Officer, born in Jenkins, Kentucky. Both were residents of Miami. He had been previously married and was divorced.

FATHER'S OBITUARY: Pittsburgh Press, October 21, 1961 - CASPER of 321 8th St., Sharpsburg, on Wednesday, October 18, 1961, Vincent (Jim), husband of Maria Foglia; father of Lucille Blair, Margaret Bell, Dorothy Hall, Mary Rees and Peter Casper; brother of Anthony and Patrick Casper; also survived by six grandchildren. Friends received at the Eugene N. Worrell Funeral Home, 820 Main St. at Ninth, Sharpsburg. Funeral on Monday morning at 9:00 a.m. Requiem high mass in the Madonna of Jerusalem Church at 10:00. [His wife died in 1964 and they are buried at St. Mary's Cemetery, Sharpsburg.]

"Dorothy Hall, Class of 1942 - Passed away Jan 22, 2011 and was buried with military honors in the Florida National Cemetery at Bushnell, FL. Served during WWII in New Guinea, Leyete, Luzon, and Australia. She was commended for her service while evacuating wounded soldiers from combat areas while under shell fire and sniper fire at the 120th field hospital. She also was commended by President Truman and President Obama for her service."
