GENEVIEVE CLARKE ROSE

Class of 1938


Born August 27, 1917, in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, Genevieve Veronica Clarke was the daughter of William "Oliver" Clark and Catherine Huber.

At the time of the 1930 Federal Census, William O. Clarke, an "Engineer - Portable Steam," and his family, lived on Cole Avenue, Allison Park, Hampton Township, Allegheny County. The children were Celestia [Celeste], Genevieve, Marie, William and Virginia.

Genevieve graduated from St. Francis in 1938, and then served in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II, between July 12, 1942 and September 24, 1944. She married Lt. Thomas Gaylord Rose.

In 1950, when Genevieve applied for Veteran Compensation for her military service, she was Genevieve C. Rose, and her address was in Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio. She stated she had lived at Kahn Avenue, Allison Park, Allegheny County, at the time she entered service.

In 1959, she is listed in the City Directory of Lancaster, Ohio, as Genevieve Rose, wife of Thomas G. Rose.

Thomas Gaylord Rose, a First Lieutenant in World War II, was born on October 16, 1910, and he died on December 29, 1973. He is buried at Maple Grove Cemetery, Lancaster, Ohio.

Based on her Social Security record, she was Genevieve Clarke Rose until October 27, 1977, at which time her name became Genevieve C. Wellslager. Her second husband was Clifford Wellslager, and records indicate they married on October 3, 1977.

Genevieve died on August 20, 1998 at Bradenton, Manatee County, Florida. She is buried at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Lancaster, Ohio, where her first husband is interred. Her government grave marker says, "Genevieve R. Wellslager - 1st Lt. US Army - World War II - Aug 27, 1917 - Aug 20 1998."

She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church. - Survivors include her husband, Clifford H.; two daughters, Virginia Gage of Grove City, Ohio, and Cindy McDaniel of Cincinnati; two stepdaughters, Sharon of Bradenton and Lynn of Myakka City; a son, Tom Rose of Lancaster, Ohio; two stepsons, Cliff of Bradenton and Gordon of Myakka City; three sisters, Celeste Singer of Bartow, Marie Vaughn of Walkersville, Md., and Virginia McNally of Allison Park; a brother, Bill Clarke of Apple Creek, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. - A Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church.
