MARY "MAE" B. CULLETON

Class of 1914

Mary B. Culleton sometimes went by the name "Mae B. Culleton." She was born on November 27, 1876 or 1877, probably in Tyrone, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Edward J. Culleton and Jane Farrell, both born in Ireland.

The family was residing in Tyrone, Fayette County, at the time of the 1880 Federal Census, at which time the father was working as a tailor. Their children were Sarah, Alice, William, Edward, Mary, and Maggie.

By 1900, the mother, Jane, was a widow. Living with her at South Chestnut Street in Scottdale, Westmoreland County, were Mary (b Dec 1877), William J., Marguerite, and Jane.

In 1910, the family lived on South Broadway, Scottdale. In the home were the widowed mother, with Mary B., Margarett and Jane. Mary B. was listed as a "Nurse - Households."

Laws requiring registration of nurses probably caused Mae to seek formal training.

Mother, Jane Farrell Culleton, born in Ireland in 1839, died June 26, 1912. She is buried at St. John's Cemetery, Scottdale.

The Daily Courier, Connellsville, PA, Sept 5, 1911: "Miss Mae Culleton, who has been visiting at her home on South Broadway for the past week, returned to her duties at St. Francis Hospital, Pittsburg.

Having graduated from the School of Nursing at St. Francis Hospital in 1914, in 1920, Mary B. Culleton, 35 [understated], was living on Rosedale Street, Pittsburgh, with two sisters, Margaret C., and E. Jane. Mary B. was a "Nurse Steel Mfg."

The Daily Courier, Connellsville, PA, March 13, 1920: "Mrs. Harry Van Gorder is spending the week-end with her sister, Miss Mae Culleton of Wilkinsburg." This was Mary's sister, Alice.

A brother, William J. Culleton, died in 1935. His obituary said he was "one of the best known superintendents of the H. C. Frick Coke company." At the time of his death, Mary B. and Jane lived in East Liberty.

Mary B. Culleton, as written on her death certificate, Registered Nurse, died June 5, 1957. She and her sister, E. Jane Culleton, had been living at Highland Avenue, Pittsburgh. She is buried at Calvary Cemetery, Pittsburgh. Mary was survived by sisters E. Jane and Margaret, according to her death notice. E. Jane Culleton gave the information for the death record.

E. Jane - Ellen Jane - Culleton, born in 1882, died on September 22, 1958. Her occupation was "Secy-Nurse-Frick Coke Co." She, too, is buried at Calvary Cemetery.
