PAULINE MARGARET KOPLAR SCHLATMANN

Pauline Margaret Koplar was born on May 4, 1909 in Herminie, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Her parents were Martin and Mary, aka, Meri Ann. Martin Koplar, born in Austria, died of Pulmonary Tuberculosis in 1911. Meri Ann married Valentine Urbas.

Pauline had a daughter, Margaret C. Koplar, on May 18, 1927 in Herminie. She is found in the 1930 & 1940 census records living with her grandmother and step-grandfather, Valentine and Mary Urbas. In 1930, Pauline was a student nurse at St. Francis Hospital. In 1940, she is listed as a Registered Nurse at Mayview Hospital, Allegheny County.

She served in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II, from October 1, 1942 until February 9, 1946. When she applied for Veteran Compensation in 1950, she designated the V. A. Hospital at Lyons, New Jersey as the address at which she would receive her check.

Bernardsville News, Bernardsville, New Jersey, August 26, 1954: "At ceremonies held in the picnic grove, Veterans' Administration Hospital, Lyons, Miss Pauline Koplar, R. N., was installed as the first lady commander in the history of the Jack W. Young Post 225, American Legion, Lyons...."

Pauline married Dr. Vincent Schlatmann. He died suddenly on May 29, 1955, just five weeks after moving from Jersey City, New Jersey to Bridgewater, New Jersey. He was on the staff of East Orange Veteran's Hospital. He is buried at the National Cemetery, Beverly.

In December 1963, Pauline Schlatmann received a 25-year service award at Lyons V. A. Hospital.

OBITUARY: Pauline Schlatmann, 93, of Swede Hill, Greensburg, died Wednesday, March 5, 2003, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. She was born May 4, 1909, in Herminie, a daughter of the late Martin and Meri Ann (Urbas) Koplar [Note: Urbas was Meri's second husband's surname.]. Mrs. Schlatmann was a retired nurse, having graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing and Seton Hall University in New Jersey, where she received her masters degree in public health nursing. During the 1930's and early 1940's, she worked as a public health nurse in the Pittsburgh area and was a veteran of World War II, having served as a member of the U.S. Army Nurse Corp. stationed in the European Theatre. Following retirement, she worked for the American Red Cross as a volunteer. She was a member of the Church of St. Paul, Greensburg, the Altar and Rosary Society and funeral choir. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Vincent Schlatmann, in 1956; two brothers, Joseph Koplar and Edward Urbas; two sisters, Alma Shrzypinski and Mollie Clark. Mrs. Schlatmann is survived by a daughter, Margaret Zdravecky and her husband, Lattamere, of Herminie; three grandchildren, Barbara Zdravecky of Anna Maria, Fla., Janet Brooks and her husband, Philip, of Wexford and Stephen Zdravecky and his wife, Jessica, of Great Falls, Va.; three great-grandchildren, Jordan and Mollie Brooks and Maggie Bartles; a sister, Mary Bretzel of West Newton; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received in the JOSEPH W. NICKELS FUNERAL HOME INC., Herminie, Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the Church of St. Paul, Greensburg with the Rev. Daniel C. Mahoney as celebrant. Interment with full military honors accorded by VFW Post 33 honor guard, Greensburg will follow in Westmoreland County Memorial Park.

Pauline's daughter, Margaret C. (Koplar) Zdravecky, 85, of Herminie, died on October 8, 2012. She is also buried at Westmoreland County Memorial Park.
