AN OVERVIEW OF RESOURCES AT COURTHOUSE & WHEELING ROOM

W. A. G. S. Past-President, Nancy Lewellen Roe

The Ohio County Courthouse has birth and death records, beginning in 1853, but they weren't required by law until 1923. Marriage records start in the late 1700's, as do deeds and wills.

The staff at the courthouse cannot do research for you but will make certified copies (actual certificates) for $5.00 each. They will not Xerox these records. They will, however, Xerox wills and deeds for 50 cents a page.

The Wheeling Room at the Ohio County Public Library has "The Tenmile Country" along with many other records for Washington and Greene Counties, as well as county histories for Beaver, Armstrong, Westmoreland, and Fayette.

We also have many census records in book form for the counties in WV, as well as Belmont, Monroe, Washington, Jefferson, and Noble, in Ohio.

There are also city directories for Wheeling dating back to 1839, as well as two cabinets of individual family histories.

We also have extensive cemetery listings for Ohio, Marshall, Ritchie, Wood, Brooke, Wetzel, and other counties in WV. Some Revolutionary and Civil War info is there, too. There are also many local history books, as well as county histories for most of the counties in WV, and a few for the counties of the state of VA.
