ALTMEYER FUNERAL HOME DEATH RECORDS INDEX
By Bill Maxwell.
The Wheeling Area Genealogical Society is most happy to announce the completion of an index to the Altmeyer Funeral Home (Wheeling) Death Records, covering the years 1920 through 1986. The index information was extracted from microfiche copies of the original funeral director's ledger sheets. The time span of the records is sixty-six years and lists 17,718 individuals with their date of death and place of burial.
A great deal of additional information of interest to the genealogists is also available in each of the microfiche records, but time does not permit a complete extraction of the data for publication.
The Altmeyer Funeral Home graciously donated the 417 microfiche sheets to the WAGS for the purpose of providing family genealogists assistance to locate deceased family members. The conversion of the paper records to film records does have some distinct disadvantages in that a special reader/printer is required in order to read a record. There are approximately 63 images per microfiche sheet by 3 1/2 by 5 inches so the images are much too small to be read without a machine reader.
Most of the early years of records contain only one image of data per funeral record. In the later years of record keeping, additional information was often filmed on a second adjacent image. The additional information often contains the name of sons, daughters, brothers, sisters and their cities of residence, military service information, etc.
The Wheeling Area Genealogical Society will be most happy to research and furnish you with a copy of whatever data is found for a small fee. The microfiche reader machines are the property of the Ohio County Public Library and are coin operated. This copy fee must go to the library to cover maintenance of their equipment. If you are interested in such research, please write to the Wheeling Area Genealogical Society at PO Box 6450, Wheeling, WV 26003. The complete fee is $5.00 per lookup and please enclose a stamped, self-addressed business size (#10) envelope for the return of your copied records.

*NOTE FROM SYLVIA SLIGAR, who compiled the Stone Church Cemetery book for the W. A. G. S.
The online Stone Church Cemetery list contains the burials before 1873, which are the birth and death dates from the tombstones. These are also in the WAGS Stone Church Cemetery book, compiled by Sylvia Sligar.
The online file gives only the year of death for the years 1873-1900. The WAGS book also contains the month and day of interment.
The online list 1900-1925 has ONLY the year of death and ONLY for people over age 50. The WAGS book has everybody of any age, the month and day of interment AND covers the years 1925-1945.
