ANDERSON. This gentleman is the efficient super- intendent of the public schools of Wheeling, West Virginia. He was born near West Liberty, West Virginia, and comes from a family of instructors. His first pedagogic work, after receiveng his education in the West Liberty Academy, was in the country schools of his native county, in which he taught six years. From 1868 to 1870 he acted as principal of the public schools at Bethany, in Brooke county, West Virginia. After engaging in mercantile pursuits for a short time, he resumed his former position, that of principal of the Bethany schools. This he retained for two years, when he accepted a similar position at Wellsburg. In 1879, Professor Anderson removed to Wheeling, West Virginia, where he held the position of principal of Union School in the fourth ward (in which he was succeeded by Prof. J. M. Hammond, in 1885. On July 17, 1885, Professor Anderson succeeded Prof. John Birch as superintendent of the public schools of Wheeling. This is his present position, which he in a manner which brings much praise from all. The schools have prospered under his guidance, and Professor Anderson has shown that the choice of pro- fession made by him was indeed a wise one. He is a man of scholarly attainments, and his endeavors always to advance in his work, and to give others the benefit of his knowledge. He was made a Mason at West Liberty, West Virginia, about 1865.
