Bluff City Cemetery, Elgin, Illinois

A veteran of the Civil War, Andrew O. Apple, is buried in this cemetery at 945 Bluff City Blvd. His citation reads simply for "conspicuous gallantry as a color bearer in the assault on Fort Gregg" at Petersburg, Va., on April 2, 1865. The Northampton, Pa., native was a corporal in the 12th West Virginia Infantry at the time and was awarded his medal on May 12, 1865.
